- In the face of something - in a situation where you have to deal with something unpleasant or difficult
- Learn your lesson - to be unlikely to do something stupid or wrong again, because the last time you did it something unpleasant happened
- Verdict - an opinion that you have or a decision that you make
- Hastily - done in a hurry because you do not have much time
- Marriage of convenience - a marriage arranged for political or financial reasons and not for love
- Thwart - to prevent someone from doing something that they want to do
- Opportunistic - using a situation to get power or an advantage
- Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
- Pulling strings - to use your influence in order to get something that you want
- Entice - to persuade someone to do something, especially by offering them an advantage or reward
- End-result - the result of an activity or process
- Predictable - if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
- Vote of confidence - a vote showing that a majority continues to support the policy of a leader or governing body
- Brazen - behaving in a way that is not moral or socially acceptable, and not caring if other people are shocked or offended
- Opportunism - the actions of someone who takes every opportunity to gain an advantage and is willing to behave in an unfair way
- Draw parallel - a comparison between things
- Engineer - to arrange for something to happen
- Defection - to leave a country, political party, or organization and go to another one
- Exclude - to deliberately not include something
- Clincher - something that helps someone make a decision
- Contemplate - to consider doing something in the future
- Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
- Juggernaut - something that is very powerful, especially something that has a bad effect
- Pragmatism - a practical way of thinking or dealing with problems that emphasizes results and solutions more than theories
- Accommodate - to consider and include something when you are deciding what to do
- Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
- Vacate - to leave a job or position so that it is available for someone else to do
- Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
- Stitch together - to create or form something quickly or roughly
- Misadventure - something bad that happens to you
- Blueprint - a detailed plan for doing something new, or something that is a model for how something should be done

- Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement
- Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
- Strike a balance between - to accept neither of two extreme positions or things but find a solution that is reasonable and fair
- Powerhouse - something such as a country or organization that has a lot of power or influence
- Mobilisation - to organize or prepare something, such as a group of people, for a purpose
- Militia - a group of ordinary people who are trained as soldiers to fight in an emergency
- Forefront - a leading or important position
- Merge - if two things merge, they combine or become mixed so that you can no longer tell the difference between them
