International Current Affairs
  • Today (6th January 2017) is World Day for War Orphans.
    • This day was initiated by the French organisation, SOS Enfants en Detresses.
    • Held on 6th January each year, this special day enables the International Community to recognise the plight of a particularly vulnerable group.
  • China is planning to build its second overseas military base in Pakistan near the Gwadar port. 
    • The base would be used to dock and maintain naval vessels, as well as provide other logistical support services.
National Current Affairs
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today unveiled the Official emblem of the West Bengal State government
    • The logo, designed by the Chif Minister herself, highlights the Ashoka emblem on the top with the theme of "Biswa Bangla" at the centre.
  • A special CBI court today sentenced Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav along with other convicts to 3.5 years in jail in the ₹89-lakh fodder scam case
    • The scam was exposed in 1996, leading to Yadav's resignation as the Bihar CM.
  • India's 1stpark for people with special needs was inaugurated by Telangana Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao in Hyderabad.
    • The park has a speech therapist, a physiotherapist, and vocational training instructors for differently-abled children. 
  • The 26th edition of annual World Book Fair was began in New Delhi today. 
    • This festival has been jointly organised by National Book Trust (NBT) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development in association with India Trade Promotion Organisation.
    • Theme of World Book Fair 2018 : ‘Environment and Climate Change’. 
    • Focus Areas : Environment issues like climate change, global warming, and water pollution. 
    • Guest of Honor Country for 2018 : European Union
  • The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) run by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has reached a subscriber base of 80 lakh.
    • Uttar Pradesh is the highest contributing state at 11.41 lakh APY subscribers, followed by Bihar and Tamil Nadu at 8.87 lakh and 6.60 lakh respectively.
    • Note : The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) became operational on 1st June 2015 and is available to all citizens of India in the age group of 18-40 years.

  • Micro-blogging website Twitter has announced it would not block the accounts of world leaders even if their statements are “controversial,” citing a need to promote a “public conversation” on political issues. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced issuance of over $5.9 billion (₹37,000 crore) in the country's new oil-backed cryptocurrency in coming days to fight the ongoing economic crisis. 
    • Every unit of the cryptocurrency will be equal in value to Venezuela's one oil barrel. 
    • Note : Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves and generates around 95% of its export revenue from oil.
  • Income Tax (IT) Department under the Union Finance Ministry has launched an on-line chat service on its national website www.incometaxindia.gov.in.
  • According to a recently released data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s foreign exchange (Forex) reserves have scaled to fresh record high of $409.366 billion as on December 29, 2017. 
    • The surge was due to massive spike in foreign currency assets, which is key component of the reserves.
