Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Stalemate at WTO: On U.S. obstructionism"
  • Stalemate - a situation in which progress is impossible because the people or groups involved cannot agree
  • Obstructionism - actions or behaviour that is intended to slow down or stop the progress of something, especially in a parliament
  • Worsen - to become worse, or to make something worse
  • Developing countries - countries that are poor and do not have much industrial development.
  • Biennial - a biennial event happens once every two years
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Offensive - unpleasant or insulting, and likely to make people upset or embarrassed
  • Defensive - used to protect someone or something against attack
  • Consensus - agreement among all the people involved
  • Stockpiling - to collect large amounts of things that may be needed
  • Thwart - to prevent someone from doing something that they want to do
  • Fast-track - a way of achieving something more quickly than usual
  • Rift - a disagreement between two people or groups
  • Apparent - easy to see or understand
  • Agenda - all the things that need to be done or that need to be thought about or solved
  • Contend - to compete against someone, for example for a victory or for power
  • Presumably - used for saying that you think something is true based on what you know, although you are not really certain
  • Per capita - based on calculations that show the average amount for each person affected
  • Trade-distorting - used to describe a tax or action that changes the normal characteristics of trade
  • Mandatory - ordered by a law or rule
  • Disdain - the feeling that someone or something is not important and does not deserve any respect
  • Multilateral - involving three or more groups, especially the governments of three or more countries
  • Vacuum - a lack of something
  • Counterpart - someone or something that has the same job or purpose as another person or thing, but in a different country, time, situation, or organization
  • Appellate - relating to a legal appeal
  • Dispute - a serious disagreement, especially one between groups of people that lasts for a long time
  • Poverty -  a situation in which someone does not have enough money to pay for their basic needs
  • Multi-pronged - having several aspects or elements
  • Sovereign - having the highest power or being completely independent

  • Cure - a medicine or treatment that makes someone who is ill become healthy
  • Enhanced - made better
  • Oversight - the job of checking that a process or system is working well
  • Diagnose - to find out what physical or mental problem someone has by examining them
  • Offset - to balance the effect of something, with the result that there is no advantage or disadvantage
  • Nutrition - food considered as something that keeps you healthy
  • Malnutrition - a medical condition in which you are weak or ill because you do not eat enough or do not eat enough of the right foods
  • Prisoner-of-war - someone, usually a soldier, who is held as a prisoner by the enemy during a war
  • Inmate - someone who is kept in a prison, mental hospital, or other institution
  • Ration - the food given to someone at one time, esp. to soldiers
  • Counterpart -  a person or thing that has the same purpose as another one in a different place or organization
  • Deficiency - a lack of something that your body needs
  • Piled up - to put a large number of things on top of each other
  • Vicious - extremely violent
  • Appetite - the natural feeling of wanting to eat
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Small-scale - smaller or less important than other things of the same kind
  • Inaction - the failure to do anything, especially when you should do something
  • Extensive - very large in amount or degree
  • Contract - to catch or become ill with a disease
  • Intake - the amount of something that you eat or drink
  • Fine-tune - to make small changes to something in order to make it as good or as effective as possible
  • Precisely - exactly / clearly
  • No-brainer - a question or problem that is very easy to deal with
  • Constitute - to form or make something
  • Straightforward - clear and honest
