ESSAY ON DELHI SMOG

Delhi Smog, the hottest issue has taken over not only healthy life style of Delhiite but drawn attention nationwide. Delhi is facing heavy pollution issues due to various reasons, mainly from the burning of agricultural garbage. It has been observed that air pollution levels stayed tremendously high, with a layer of smog enveloping the city. It has posed serious threat on human lives in and around the national capital, hence it needs to be taken seriously.

Smog refers to a combination of smoke and fog. Thus forming the word smog. It is a complex mixture that is formed by various pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides and dust particles, which interact with the sunlight to form ground-level ozone, leading to the build-up of haze that hangs in industrial cities. Smog is caused as a result of industrial activities, vehicular traffic, sunlight and calmer winds. These factors contribute to an all-encompassing smog, which can remain trapped in the atmosphere.
Exposure to smog can be severely harmful for the health as it can aggravate health conditions like Chest Infections/Irritation which can affect our respiratory system in an adverse way, leading to cough and lung infections. Smog reduces one’s immunity to cold and can cause irritation in the eyes, and is a direct contributor to an increased risk of premature mortality. Besides, impacting humans negatively, smog can also cause damage to forests and crops.

In order to prevent or reduce it to an alleviated level, shutting down of a power plant in no way can reduce the issue of particulate matter. Solar powered heaters with battery backup can be provided to urban poor and lower income groups to avoid burning of waste and other organic matter. The governments of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana should fund the setting up rural bio— digesters that pay farmers a price that would make the delivery for crop residue and other biomass that can be converted into methane and compost. In addition to that, each construction site should have dust-monitoring mechanism by local pollution boards with provision of heavy penalty on violation of permissible limits. Currently Delhi needs a consistent pollution control strategy to keep life under control throughout the year.

Some other key Points to know more about Delhi Smog.

Delhi is surrounded by hills of Haryana and the plains of the Yamuna. These hills are totally barren and their forests are nonexistent due to incessant industrial wastes, their ability to act like natural carbon absorbers is now ruined.

Children are more prone to getting affected by smog and vulnerable to asthma and other respiratory ailments. And people who frequently stay outdoors are more susceptible to the harms of ozone.

Shutting down of polluting industries, restricting interstate traffic and regulating city traffic, can play a cardinal role in assuaging the conditions leading to smog.
