Eminent Hindi writer Mamta Kalia will be honoured with literary award Vyas Samman for year 2017 for her novel "Dukkham Sukkham.
With eminent literary critic and poet Ram Vilas Sharma as the first recipient in 1991, the Vyas Samman is given to a Hindi literary work published in the past 10 years.
2. Sri Lanka formally hands over Hambantota port to China
Sri Lanka today formally handed over the southern sea port of Hambantota to China on a 99-year lease.
Two Chinese firms - Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) and Hambantota International Port Services (HIPS) managed by the China Merchants Port Holdings Company (CMPort) and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority will own the port and the investment zone around it
3. India set to become member of export control regime Wassenaar Arrangement
India is all set to become the 42nd member of the multilateral forum for export control on defence and space technology Wassenaar Arrangement (WA). The decision was taken during its Plenary Meeting on December 6-7 held in Vienna.
4. India and Cuba ink MoU for enhanced cooperation in Health Sector
India and Cuba have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in the health sector. The MoU is important for exchanges in the health sector and to develop institutional framework for cooperation in the health sector between the two countries.
5. Bitcoin world's fifth-largest currency, beating rupee
According to data from the RBI, the value of the country’s currency in circulation was $271.6 bn. Compared to that, as many as 16,727,450 bitcoins have been mined which put their market cap (m-cap) at $277 bn till 2 pm on Friday, toppling the rupee as the world’s fifth-largest currency; bitcoin’s m-cap had breached the $300 bn.
