The 66th Miss Universe 2017 pageant was held today at The AXIS, Las Vegas, United States. 22 year old South African model, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned Miss Universe 2017 by beating out 91 other candidates during the finals. She hails from Western Cape Province and recently earned a business management degree from North-West University. She previously was crowned Miss South Africa 2017.
Outgoing Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere crowned Nel-Peters with the $250,000 pearl-encrusted Mikimoto crown. With this, Peters becme the second Miss Universe winner from South Africa, following Miss Universe 1978 Margaret Gardiner.
Colombia's Laura Gonzalez placed first runner-up, and Jamaica's Davina Bennett was second runner-up. Shraddha Shashidhar, who is an Indian model and winner of Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva 2017, represented India but couldn't make it to the top 16.
