Essay on Women's safety in today's social and political climate.
The society that respects its women is a truly progressive society. For years, women have been subjugated to exploitation and abuse. Domestic violence in the guise of saving the family name is common. Often girls are sacrificed by 'khap panchayats' -there is no safety for women even at home. Acid attacks have disfigured many young girls. Flesh trade results in trafficking of women.
Recently, crimes against women have been on the rise. Be it eveteasing, rape or murder, women of all ages are subject to these injustices. The gang rape of Nirbhaya in December 2012 jolted India into realizing that stricter laws were needed to ensure the safety of women. Although sex determination of the unborn child has been a punishable crime, the fact is that female foeticide is common in specific states and communities even today. Female tourists have been molested and assaulted by anti-social elements, giving India a bad name.
To overcome this unenviable situation, women should be motivated to learn self-defense techniques and report every instance of misbehavior. Women should carry pepper-sprqys and install safety applications on their smart phones. Equal opportunities for education and employment will help empower women and enlighten them towards their real position in society. Women are half of mankind; they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. They must feel safe inside and outside their home. We must realise that only that society can prosper that defends and respects its women. Let us all take up the war cry of 'Stop violence against women!'
