Meaning: an instance of rebutting evidence or an accusation.
Synonyms: refutation, denial, disproving, counter-argument, countering, invalidation, negation, contradiction.
Example: Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday that Rohingya Muslims are illegal immigrants and not refugees who had applied for asylum in India. Mr. Singh’s statement drew a sharp rebuttal from National Human Rights Commission Chairperson H.L. Dattu.
2.Rendition (noun)
Meaning: a performance or interpretation, especially of a dramatic role or piece of music.
Synonyms: performance, rendering, interpretation, presentation, execution, delivery.
Example: Holding court Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadeyar, the titular maharaja of Mysuru, conducted the ‘khas durbar’ and ascended the golden throne as part of the Dasara celebrations, at the Amba Vilas palace in the city on Thursday. ‘Khas Durbar’ is a symbolic rendition of the practices which were in vogue during the rule of the maharajas.
3.Dodder (verb)
Meaning: tremble or totter, typically because of old age.
Synonyms: totter, teeter, toddle, hobble, shuffle, shamble, falter, walk haltingly, walk with difficulty, move falteringly, stumble, stagger, sway, lurch, reel.
Example: Frail and doddering, Ma Xunkai fights back tears on meeting Joe Thomas Karackattu, who is equally moved after tracing the descendant of a Malayali family that reportedly settled in South China some 700 years ago.
4.Inchoate (adjective)
Meaning: just begun and so not fully formed or developed; rudimentary.
Example: “There is not the slightest of doubt in our mind that the State can regulate the procession or the religious ceremonies to be performed but it does not vest them an absolute and/or inchoate power to prohibit the performance of ceremony in the absence of any materials sufficient enough for the formation of such opinion/decision,” the order stated.
5.Quagmire (noun)
Meaning: a soft boggy area of land that gives way underfoot, an awkward, complex, or hazardous situation.
Synonyms: muddle, mix-up, mess, predicament, unfortunate/difficult/awkward situation, mare's nest, quandary, entanglement, tangle, jumble, imbroglio; swamp, morass, bog, peat bog, marsh, mire, quag, marshland, fen, slough, quicksand.
Example: “Someone has to wear the neta’s cap. It will be a crown of thorns. Someone has to clean the quagmire and make this place habitable for people. I’m not hungry for power but we will seize the opportunity if that’s the only way to deliver for the people,” he said.
6.Envisage (verb)
Meaning: contemplate or conceive of as a possibility or a desirable future event.
Synonyms: foresee, predict, forecast, foretell, anticipate, expect, think likely, envision; form a mental picture of (something not yet existing or known).
Example: Mr. Trump’s policy envisages more pressure on Pakistan, no early U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, robust military action on counterterrorism and a greater role for India. It is for the first time that a U.S. President has been publicly so critical of Pakistan.
7.Cohesive (adjective)
Meaning: characterized by or causing cohesion.
Example: The situation in Afghanistan continues to be fragile. Though the Taliban has made some gains, it is not a cohesive movement and has divisions within it. At the same time it has to be understood that since 1747, Afghanistan’s territorial borders have remained unchanged unlike its neighbours Pakistan and the Central Asian Republics.
8.Cumulative (adjective)
Meaning: increasing or increased in quantity, degree, or force by successive additions.
Synonyms: increasing, accumulative, accumulating, growing, progressive, accruing, snowballing, mounting.
Example: India’s assistance in the defence sector has been modest and based on specific requests by the government of Afghanistan. The cumulative level of committed Indian assistance to Afghanistan amounts to $2 billion. New Delhi is always ready for more intensive bilateral relations.
9.Renunciation (noun)
Meaning: the formal rejection of something, typically a belief, claim, or course of action, express or tacit abandonment of a right or position, usually without assignment to another person.
Synonyms: abstention from, refraining from, going without, doing without, giving up of, eschewal of, rejection of, relinquishment, giving up, abandonment, resignation, abdication, surrender, signing away, waiving, forgoing.
Example: India supports the Afghan quest for peace and reconciliation. Indeed peace and reconciliation were embedded in the very first international compact on Afghanistan, in the text of the Bonn Agreement of December 2001. Renunciation of violence will help this process. For regional security there must be closer involvement of regional powers in international efforts to ensure non-interference and a stable Afghanistan; this also requires involvement of the Central Asian Republics, which border Afghanistan. It is important for India to coordinate its efforts with those of Russia and Iran to ensure success.
10.Affinity (noun)
Meaning: a natural liking for and understanding of someone or something.
Synonyms: empathy, rapport, sympathy, accord, harmony, like-mindedness.
Example: The meeting was originally scheduled for half an hour but lasted for an hour and 25 minutes. This shows that both sides are willing to devote enough time to conducting a comprehensive and in-depth exchange of views. President Xi said that Dangal’s success has increased the affinity of the Chinese to the people of India, while PM Modi also highly praised the great success of Where Has the Time Gone, a film named after a speech by President Xi and which was co-produced by artists from the five BRICS member states.
