The Hindu Newspaper Editorial Vocabulary For IBPS PO 2017

Vocabulary is an important part of English that helps you deal with all kinds of questions in objective as well as descriptive papers of various exams. Example: The entourage of appeals before the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal, and writ petitions before numerous High Courts, in a short span begs the question: Is the Code truly poised to meet the ends it proclaims?
1. Entourage [ahn-too-rahzh] 
Noun: a group of attendants or associates, as of a person of rank or importance; surroundings; environment.
Synonyms: retinue, associates, attendants, companions, company, cortege, court, courtiers, escort, following, groupies, hangers-on.
Antonym: leader.
Example: Upon admission, the moratorium period (freezing of bank accounts, prohibition on foreclosures in relation to financial debts, etc.) commences.
2. Moratorium [mawr-uh-tawr-ee-uh m, -tohr-, mor-] 
Noun: a suspension of activity:
a moratorium on the testing of nuclear weapons; a legally authorized period to delay payment of money due or the performance of some other legal obligation, as in an emergency; an authorized period of delay or waiting.
Synonyms: ban, delay, freeze, halt, pause, postponement, reprieve, truce, abeyance, adjournment, break.
Antonym: continuation, continuance.
Example: Many of its ‘vishing experts’ have never left town, but their reach spans the nation.
3. Vish [vish] 
Verb: to try to obtain financial or other confidential information from people by placing phone calls, typically automated, that seem to be from a legitimate organization, usually a financial institution; to make a victim in this way.
Example:Only a few hundred metres from Vidyasagar railway station is the place where he lived for 18 years, taught girls in a thatched school, and distributed medicines from a home clinic.
4. Thatch [thach] 
noun: a covering of such a material; the leaves of various palms that are used for thatching; something resembling thatch on a roof, especially thick hair covering the head.
Verb: to cover with or as if with thatch.
Example:The road itself, which runs parallel to the railway line, is pockmarked with large potholes.
5. Pockmark [pok-mahrk] 
Noun: Usually, pockmarks. scars or pits left by a pustule in smallpox or the like; a small pit or scar.
Verb: to mark or scar with or as with pockmarks.
Example: And it is these towers that hold the key to Jamtara’s infamy.
6. Infamy [in-fuh-mee] 
Noun: extremely bad reputation, public reproach, or strong condemnation as the result of a shameful, criminal, or outrageous act; infamous character or conduct; an infamous act or circumstance.
Synonyms: notoriety, opprobrium, abomination, atrocity, disapprobation, discredit, disesteem, disgrace, dishonor, disrepute, enormity, evil, ignominy.
Antonyms: credit, esteem, goodness, honor.
Example:Sri Lanka has found its fortunes and resources dwindling at an alarming rate.
7. Dwindle [dwin-dl] 
Verb: to become smaller and smaller; shrink; waste away; to fall away, as in quality; degenerate.
Synonyms: abate, decay, decline, decrease, die down, diminish, drop, ebb, fade.
Antonyms: ascend, develop, enhance, enlarge.
Example: Twenty-four years after he last represented India, former Delhi stalwart Ajay Sharma announced his retirement from active cricket here on Friday.
8. Stalwart [stawl-wert] 
Adjective: strongly and stoutly built; sturdy and robust; strong and brave; valiant; firm, steadfast, or uncompromising.
Noun: a physically stalwart person.
Synonyms: dependable, fearless, indomitable, intrepid, redoubtable, staunch, stout, tenacious, vigorous, bold, bound, brave.
Antonyms: afraid, timid, undependable, unreliable.
Example: Maheshwari clinchesskeet bronze.
9. Clinch [klinch] 
Verb: to secure in position by beating down the protruding point.
Synonyms: assure, cap, conclude, decide, seal, confirm, determine, seize, set, settle, verify, sew up.
Antonyms: delay, put off, disprove, invalidate.
10. Skeet [skeet] 
Noun: a form of trapshooting in which two traps are used and targets are hurled singly or in pairs at varying elevations and speeds so as to simulate the angles of flight taken by game birds.
Synonyms: bird, clay disk.
