Directions (Q. 1-10):
1. A’s and B’s age are in the ratio of 4:5. Four years hence, the ratio of their ages will become 5:6. What is B’s present age?

1). Answer: B
Let the present age of A and B are 4x and 5x
According to the question,
(4x+4) / (5x+4) = 5/6
24x+ 24 = 25x + 20
x = 4
Hence, the present age of 5(4) = 20 years

2. The mother’s age is double the age of her daughter’s age. Four years hence, the ratio of their ages will become 13:7. What was the age of mother, 5 years ago?

The present age of mother and daughter are 2x and x
Four years hence, their ages will be,
(2x+4)/(x+4) = 13 /7
14x+28 = 13x+52
x =24
∴ the present age of mother is 2(24) = 48
Hence, 5 years ago the age of mother was 48 – 5 = 43 years

3. The average age of a family of 6 members is 30 years. If the youngest in the family is 10 years old, what is the age of the oldest in the family?

4. The average age of a family of 6 members is 38. If the youngest in the family is 8 years old. What was the average age of the family at the time of youngest one birth?

The total age of 6 members = 38 × 6 = 228
Excluding the age of youngest one = 228 – 8 = 220
The average of the family at the time of youngest one birth = 220 /5 = 44

5. At present Nithya is eight years elder to Priya. Divya is two years younger than Nithya. If the respective ratio between the present age of Priya and Divya is 3:4, then what is the present age of Divya?

Let the present age of Nithya be, x
∴ the present age of Priya = x -8 and Divya = x – 2
According to the question,
(x-8) / (x-2) = 3/4
4x - 32 = 3x -6
x =26
Hence, the present age of Priya = 26 – 2 = 24 years

6. Ten years before, the ratio of ages of A and B was 15:11. After 11 years from now, the ratio of their ages will be 9:8. What is the present age of B?

The present age of A and B are, (15x+10) and (11x+10)
According to the question,
(15x + 10 +11)/ (11x+ 10 + 11) = 9/8
120x + 168 = 99x + 189
21 x = 21
∴ x =1
Hence, the present age of Bis 11 (1) + 10 = 21 years

7. Karthik’s brother is 4 years elder to him. His mother was 28 years of age when he was born, while his father was 30 years of age when his sister was born. If his sister was 5 years of age when his brother was born, what were the respective age of Karthick’s mother and father when his brother was born?

When Karthik was born, his mother’s age was 28 years and his brother is 4 yrs elder to Karthik.
∴ Karthik mother’s age (at his brother’s birth) = 28 - 4 = 24 years
Karthik father was 30 years old when his sister was born. Karthik’s sister is 5 years elder to his brother.
∴ The age of Karthik father (at his brother’s birth) = 30 + 5 = 35 years
Hence, the age of Karthik mother and father was 24yrs and 35yrs

8. The average age of 3 girls is 10 years. This gets doubled if their mother’s age is also included, then what is the age of the mother?

The average age, when the age of the mother is included is 10 × 2 = 20
∴ the total age = 4 × 20 = 80
Hence, the mother’s age = 80 – 30 = 50 years

9. At present, the ratio of the ages of A and B is 6:5 and 15 years from now, the ratio will gets changed to 9:8. What was the age of A, 8 years ago?

Present age of A and B are 6x and 5x
According to the question,
(6x +15) / (5x+15) = 9/8
48x + 120 = 45x +135
3x = 15
x = 5
Hence, the age of A 8 years ago was, 6 (5) – 8 = 30 – 8 = 22 years

10. Prabha got married 6 years ago. Today her age is 1 3/13 times her age at the time of marriage. Her son’s age is 1/8 times her age. What is the age of her son?

Let the age of Prabha 6 years ago be x,
The present age of Prabha is (6+x)
∴ (6+x) = 16/13 x
(16/13)x – x = 6
3/13 x = 6
∴ x = 26
∴ the present age of Prabha is 26+6 = 32
Hence, the age of Prabha’s son = 1/8 × 32 = 4 years
