Example: Five Arab powers sever ties with Qatar Accuse it of backing militant and sectarian groups.

1. Sever [sev-er] 
Verb: to separate (a part) from the whole, as by cutting or the like; to divide into parts, especially forcibly; cleave.
Synonyms: detach, disconnect, separate, split, bisect, carve.
Antonyms: attach, combine, connect, couple, join, link.
2. Back [bak]
Noun: the rear part of the human body, extending from the neck to the lower end of the spine; the part of the body of animals corresponding to the human back.
Verb: to go or move backward.
Adjective: situated at or in the rear; far away or removed from the front or main area, position, or rank; remote.
Synonyms: backward, behind, final, following, hind, posterior.
Antonyms: beginning, first, front, preceding, future.
Example: Europe has been hit by a spate of terror attacks over the last two years, and the attacks in Britain have further underscored the enormity of the challenge facing the continent.
3. Spate [speyt]
Noun: a sudden, almost overwhelming, outpouring.
Synonyms: deluge, flood, flurry, outpouring, string, succession.
4. Underscore [uhn-der-skawr,  -skohr]
Verb: to mark with a line or lines underneath; underline, as for emphasis; to stress; emphasize
Noun: a line drawn beneath something written or printed.
Synonyms: accentuate, highlight, indicate, mark, stress, accent.
5. Enormity [ih-nawr-mi-tee] 
Noun: outrageous or heinous character; atrociousness; something outrageous or heinous, as an offense.
Synonyms: depravity, horror, abomination, atrociousness, atrocity, crime.
Antonyms: delight, esteem, goodness, joy, kindness, virtue.
Example: This has provided Mr. Modi with an opportunity to develop greater synergies with Europe in tackling this problem.
6. Synergy [sin-er-jee]
Noun: the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, contributions, etc.; synergism.
Synonyms: teamwork, alliance, coaction, harmony, symbiosis, synergism.
Antonyms: discord, divorce, separation.
Example: European powers now want to hunker down and are looking for new partners.
7. Hunker [huhng-ker]
Verb: to squat on one's heels (often followed by down); to hunch; to hide, hide out, or take shelter (usually followed by down)
Noun: hunkers, one's haunches.
Synonyms: bend, bow, cower, dip, duck, grovel.
Example: Modi was doing just that in Europe: presenting a subtle counter-narrative to China’s rise.
8. Subtle [suht-l]
Adjective: thin, tenuous, or rarefied, as a fluid or an odor; fine or delicate in meaning or intent; difficult to perceive or understand; delicate or faint and mysterious.
Synonyms: exquisite, faint, indirect, ingenious, profound, slight, sophisticated.
Antonyms: ignorant, stupid, forthright, hard, harsh, honest.
Example: Mr. Modi’s outreach, sustained over the last three years, has injected much-needed pragmatism in a relationship which was adrift for quite some time.
9. Pragmatism [prag-muh-tiz-uh m]
Noun: character or conduct that emphasizes practicality; a philosophical movement or system having various forms, but generally stressing practical consequences as constituting the essential criterion in determining meaning, truth, or value.
Synonyms: advantage, advantageousness, advisability, appositeness, aptness, benefit, convenience.
Antonyms: disadvantage, inappropriateness.
10. Adrift [uh-drift]
Adjective, adverb: floating without control; drifting; not anchored or moored; lacking aim, direction, or stability.
Synonyms: afloat, drifting, loose, unanchored, unmoored.
Antonyms: anchored, determined, on course, on target, purposeful, stable.
