1.Staunch (adjective)
Meaning: very loyal and committed in attitude.
Synonyms: stalwart, loyal, faithful, trusty, committed, devoted, dedicated, dependable, reliable, steady, constant, hard-working, vigorous, stable, firm, steadfast, redoubtable, resolute, unswerving, unwavering, unhesitating, unfaltering.
Example: The architect of a reunified Germany and a staunch champion of European integration, Helmut Kohl, who died at 87, was the longest-serving German Chancellor since World War II. The steely politician, who lost his bid for a fifth consecutive term as head of his conservative Christian Democratic Union in 1998, went into political wilderness within months thereafter, following a controversy over anonymous donations to his party.
Meaning: based on the first impression; accepted as correct until proved otherwise.
Example: The ICJ has merely arrived at a prima facie satisfaction — based on an analysis at first sight — that it possesses the power to rule on India’s application, and that India’s rights, under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, have plausibly been violated by Pakistan’s detention, trial and ultimate sentencing to death of Jadhav.
3.Ramification (noun)
Meaning: a complex or unwelcome consequence of an action or event.
Synonyms: consequence, result, aftermath, outcome, effect, upshot, issue, sequel;
Example: What’s more, the internationalisation of the dispute potentially comes with its
political ramifications for India. But much as all these considerations can serve as a basis for cynicism, we mustn’t despair at India’s choice. Its victory, impermanent as it may ultimately prove to be, must be celebrated for what it is: a vindication of the rule of law.
4.Empirical (adjective)
Meaning: based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.
Synonyms: observed, seen, factual, actual, real, verifiable, first-hand.
Example: Despite consistent empirical evidence which shows that international law positively influences state behaviour, these questions, seeped in scepticism, somehow never seem to go away.
5.Espionage (noun)
Meaning: the practice of spying or of using spies, typically by governments to obtain political and military information.
Synonyms: spying, undercover work, cloak-and-dagger activities, surveillance, reconnaissance, intelligence, eavesdropping, infiltration, counter-espionage, counter-intelligence;
Example: Pakistan claims that these actions do not breach the Vienna Convention, as Jadhav was involved in espionage and sabotage.
6.Capricious (adjective)
Meaning: given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behaviour.
Synonyms: fickle, inconstant, changeable, variable, unstable, mercurial, volatile, erratic, vacillating, irregular, inconsistent, fitful, arbitrary.
Example: The reasons supplied by the petitioners on why the linking of Aadhaar and PAN is capricious were wholly ignored. For example, the judgment failed to heed to the fact that the consequences of an invalidation of a person’s PAN might result in a virtual “civil death”, as the senior counsel Arvind P. Datar, who represented one of the petitioners, described the provision.
7.Proclivity (noun)
Meaning: a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition towards a particular thing.
Synonyms: liking, inclination, tendency, leaning, disposition, propensity, bent, bias, penchant, predisposition, predilection, partiality, preference, fondness, weakness,
Example: Now, it’s plain to see that even if Parliament represents the interests of the people, any legislation made by it is a product of the proclivities of the government in power.
8.Indigenous (adjective)
Meaning: originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native.
Synonyms: native, aboriginal, local.
Example: The hold of the GJM in the Hills was sought to be broken by reaching out to indigenous communities in the region through the creation of various tribal development boards. The GJM, on the other hand, believes that the GTA is just a stepping stone for the creation of a separate State.
9.Caveat (noun)
Meaning: a warning or proviso of specific stipulations, conditions, or limitations.
Synonyms: warning, caution, admonition, monition, red flag, alarm bells.
Example: Through speech we merely communicate our thoughts, feelings, desires attributable to that moment. Such expressions may be transitory. What is fundamental and inalienable is the individual’s right to freely express himself or herself. This, of course, is subject to caveats.
10.Enunciate (verb)
Meaning: To pronounce; articulate., To state or set forth precisely or systematically.
Example: The preceding enunciation is necessary to put in perspective controversies that have bedevilled the national discourse that has consumed public attention.
