These vocab words will help you a lot in your competitive exams.
1.Polygamy (noun)
Meaning: the practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time.
Example: The Supreme Court today will begin hearing arguments in Shayara Bano v. Union of India, which has popularly come to be known as the “triple talaq case”. This case, in which the constitutional validity of certain practices of Muslim personal law such as triple talaq, polygamy, and nikah halala has been challenged, has created political controversy across the spectrum.
2.Adjudicate (verb)
Meaning: make a formal judgement on a disputed matter., act as a judge in a competition.
synonyms: judge, adjudge, try, hear, examine, arbitrate, decide on, decide, settle, resolve, determine, pronounce on, give a ruling on, sit in judgement on, pass judgement on, give a verdict on, make a ruling on.
Example: One would expect the judges of the Supreme Court to adjudicate the constitutional validity of triple talaq (and, if they choose, of the other practices under question as well) detached from the political debate, and strictly in accordance with law.
3.Adjudication (noun)
Meaning: the action or process of adjudicating., a formal judgement on a disputed matter.
synonyms: arbitration, refereeing, umpiring.
Example: While this virtually operates as a stay on Jadhav’s execution, a substantive interim order is expected only when the court hears India’s application for “provisional measures” at its hearing on May 15, pending adjudication of its plea for declaring Pakistan’s actions as violative of international law. New Delhi’s position is that Jadhav is innocent and that he was “kidnapped” by Pakistani agents from Iran.
4.Incongruous (adjective)
Meaning: not in harmony or keeping with the surroundings or other aspects of something.
synonyms: out of place, out of keeping, inappropriate, unsuitable, unsuited, not in harmony.
Example: On the face of it, India’s decision to move the ICJ may appear somewhat incongruous in the light of its position against internationalizing its disputes with Pakistan.
5.Clemency (noun)
Meaning: mercy; lenience.
Synonyms: mercy, mercifulness, leniency, lenience, mildness, indulgence, forbearance.
Example: Though it is theoretically possible for Pakistan to ignore the ICJ’s order and go ahead with its internal processes for the disposal of appeals and clemency petitions, it is unlikely to do so. Such a course of action would undermine its international credibility.
6.Preclude (verb)
Meaning: prevent from happening; make impossible.
Synonyms: prevent, make it impossible for, make it impracticable for, rule out, put a stop to, stop, prohibit, debar, interdict, block, bar, hinder, impede.
Example: The ICJ has rejected Pakistan’s objections regarding the urgency of the matter. It rejected Pakistan’s own jurisdiction to take up the case and its claim that a 2008 bilateral agreement between the two countries precluded the matter from being raised before the ICJ.
7.Aesthetics (noun)
Meaning: a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty.
Example: "Writing well is not a mere matter of aesthetics; it is a “moral issue.” In fact, if I were the current occupant of the White House, I would take on this issue by appointing Sir Harold to be our nation’s Good Writing Tsar. Or Czar.
8.Verbiage (noun)
Meaning: excessively lengthy or technical speech or writing.
synonyms: verbosity, verboseness, padding, wordiness, prolixity, prolixness, superfluity, redundancy, long-windedness, lengthiness, protractedness, discursiveness, expansiveness, digressiveness, convolution, circumlocution, circuitousness, rambling, wandering.
Example: Rewriting some Clinton Global Initiative verbiage about empowering women, for example, Evans ends up with this terse sentence: “Girls could increase global G.D.P. by as much as 5.4 percent.
9.Notwithstanding (preposition)
Meaning: in spite of.
synonyms: in spite of, despite, regardless of, for all
Example: The fall of the Soviet Union shook their ideological confidence. Instead of rethinking their approach to make themselves relevant, they too joined the bandwagon of ‘there is no alternative’ and started following neoliberal policies notwithstanding the occasional noises made against imperialism and finance capital.
10.Bonhomie (noun)
Meaning: cheerful friendliness; geniality.
synonyms: geniality, congeniality, conviviality, cordiality, affability, amiability,sociability, friendliness, warmth, warm-heartedness, good nature, good humour,joviality, cheerfulness, good cheer, cheeriness, jollity, happiness
Example:It is foolhardy on India’s part to expect any bonhomie from Turkey (“The long arc to Ankara”, May 5). India’s close ties with Russia along with its warmth towards the Cyprus President, and Vice President Hamid Ansari’s visit to Armenia are sure to discomfort Turkey.
