West Bengal remembers Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary

Today is the birth anniversary of the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore. The process of paying tributes to the great poet has started since early morning throughout West Bengal. The main function is being held at Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Jorasanko in north Kolkata. Songs written by the Nobel laureate poet are being sung and his poetry is being recited at different venues of celebrations.

PM Modi addresses Indian heads of mission meet in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an Indian heads of mission meet in New Delhi, which is brainstorming key foreign policy issues and challenges including India’s engagement with major powers as well as strain in ties with Pakistan and China. The four-day conference, was formally inaugurated by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Maharashtra government bans sale of junk food like potato chips and soft drinks inschool canteens
The Maharashtra government has imposed a ban on the sale of junk food in school canteens across the state. A Government Resolution said, potato chips, noodles, carbonated soft drinks, pizzas, burgers, cakes, biscuits, buns, pastries, etc. cannot be sold. It gave a list of 20 items that can be sold, which include wheat roti, vegetable pulav, idli-vada, coconut water and jaljira. The decision was taken on the recommendations of the Task Force, formed by the central government, to promote consumption of healthy food by children in schools and to ban sale of junk food. The task force, in its report, had said junk food containing high levels of fat, salt and sugar and very little nutritional content leads to obesity, dental diseases, diabetes and heart ailments in later life.

200 airports to come under regional air connectivity scheme
Union Minister of State for Aviation Jayanta Sinha today said the Centre will bring 200 airports under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional air connectivity scheme. Sinha added that there would be multiple rounds of bidding. He said that regional air connectivity was both pro-poor and pro-markets.
Sachin Tendulkar conferred with Fellowship Award in UK
India’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar plans to support charities and various initiatives to help the under-privileged people. He has received the Fellowship Award at the 7th annual Asian Awards in UK.  India’s playback singer Adnan Sami won the award for 'Outstanding achievement in Music'.
Every house to get smart ID in Haryana
The teams of Saksham and e-Numerator would visit houses to feed their GPS location in tablets and create smart house IDs online and link each house with biometric in Haryana. During the survey, the address of each house, photo, location, details of the owner of house, electricity connection, water connection, details of electronic devices, bank account numbers, IFSC code, Aadhaar and personal details would be gathered. The state government would make sure that benefits of 150 services of 87 departments are provided online through this data.

Cabinet appointments committee approves seven top-level changes in variousbanks
The cabinet appointments Committee has approved seven top-level changes in various public sector banks. Usha Ananthasubramanian (MD, and CEO, Punjab National Bank) has been appointed as MD & CEO of ‘Allahabad Bank'. Sunil Mehta, Executive (Director, Corporation Bank) has been appointed as MD & CEO of ‘Punjab National Bank’. R Subramaniakumar (Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank) has been elevated as MD & CEO of Indian Overseas Bank. Dinabandhu Mohapatra (Executive Director at Canara Bank) as MD and CEO of Bank of India.
G Rajkiran Rai (Executive Director at Oriental Bank of Commerce) has been appointed MD & CEO of Union Bank of India, for a period of three years (from 1st July 2017). A Sankara Narayanan (ED, Bank of India) has been appointed MD & CEO of Vijaya Bank (from 1st September) MO Rego (MD & CEO of Bank of India) has been appointed MD & CEO of Syndicate Bank.

Nations urge United States to stay in Paris climate agreement
Climate change negotiators are meeting in the German city of Bonn. They have called for the United States to stay in the Paris agreement. Delegates from some 190 countries and territories yesterday kicked off talks on rules to implement the accord. The agreement, which took effect in last November, calls for all countries to set targets to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. US has sent a team to the meeting, but it is not clear how long the world's second largest emitter will remain engaged in the negotiations. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to overhaul measures for tackling climate change that were introduced by his predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump has signaled that he will soon decide whether to pull his country out of the Paris Agreement.
IMF: India will Grow at 7.7% in 2018-19
The International Monetary Fund in its regional economic outlook has predicted the growth rate of India as 7.2% in the 2017-18 fiscal and 7.7% in 2018-19 fiscal. The report has stated that the disruptions caused by the demonetisation would be offset by a favorable monsoon and continued progress in resolving supply-side bottlenecks. However, it has predicted the investment recovery to remain modest and uneven across sectors. Though weaknesses in bank and corporate balance sheets is likely to affect the near term credit growth, the report cites confidence and policy credibility gains and continued fiscal consolidation and anti-inflationary monetary policy to be the factors that underpin macroeconomic stability.

Senate confirms Heather Wilson as Trump's Air Force secretary
US Senate has confirmed appointment of Heather Wilson, a former Republican member of the House of Representatives as the Secretary of the Air Force for President Donald Trump. The vote yesterday was 76-22 in favor of Wilson becoming the top civilian overseeing the Air Force. The 22 "no" votes all came from Democrats. She is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and former Rhodes scholar. Wilson, 56, has also served on the National Security Council under President George HW Bush.
India elected as President of UN-Habitat
India has been unanimously elected as the President of the UN-Habitat. UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nations’ Organisation (UNO) reports to the United Nations General Assembly. UN-Habitat  promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements across the world. India has been elected as the President of UN-Habitat after a gap of 10 years. This is only the third time that India has been elected as the President of UN-Habitat after 2007 and 1988. The UN-Habitat was established in 1978.

Konkona named Best Actress for 'Lipstick Under My Burkha'
Konkona Sen Sharma has been named the Best Actress for the film 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' at the 17th edition of the New York Indian Film Festival. Sohail Mahmood to be Pakistan's new envoy to India: Reports
One of Pakistan's senior-most diplomats, Sohail Mahmood (55), will replace Abdul Basit as the country's new High Commissioner to India, as per reports. Mahmood is reportedly expected to take up the new role either by May end or early June. Mahmood, who is currently Pakistan's ambassador to Turkey, has also served in Pakistan's missions in the US and Thailand.

The State level Under-19 CAPF Football Talent Hunt Tournament for Boys and Girls organized by Assam Rifles concluded today at Kohima. For the first time in the history of Indian Football, India is going to host the under-17 FIFA World Cup in the month of October. In regard to this event, Prime Minster Narendra Modi has taken initiative to conduct a nationwide Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournaments. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Nagaland Chief Minister, Dr. Shürhozielie Liezetsu expressed confident that such tournament will boost the efforts to promote football in the country.

Anthony Amalraj entered the men's singles final of an ITTF event for the second successive week, only to lose in the title clash of the Brazil Open. He went down 12-14, 9-11,7-11, 7-11, 5-11 to Brazlian Caldrano Hugo. The eighth seeded Anthony Amalraj, who was in the best form of his life in recent times, had very little chance against Hugo who was the toast of the nation and also the tournament’s top seed.
N'Golo Kante named Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year
N’Golo Kante in the first week of May 2017 voted the 2017 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association. Kante topped the poll of the 340-strong membership ahead of his Blues team-mate Eden Hazard, with Tottenham’s Dele Alli in third place.
Boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualifies for World Championships
Indian boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualified for the World Championships in the 52 kilogram category after getting a walkover against Malaysia's Salam Abdul Kasim at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, today. With Bisht, India now have five boxers confirmed for the World Championships. They are the bronze medal winning duo of Vikas Krishan in 75 and Amit Phangal in 49 kilogram weight categories and silver-medallists Shiva Thapa in 60 and Sumit Sangwan in 91 kilogram categories.
