Punjab government has made Aadhaar Cards mandatory in place of Ration Cards for all Financial Assistance scheme besides introducing new forms to get the benefit of old age pensions. Giving this information at Chandigarh, a government spokesman said that the step has been taken by the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to ensure that only genuine people get the benefits of pension and other financial assistance schemes.

Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said government is working towards transforming India into a digitally empowered nation and imparting digital literacy to the last mile of rural India. He said this while inaugurating the NIELIT Bhawan, a state of the art green building of the National Institute of Electronics and IT at Dwarka in New Delhi. Mr Shakar also launched web enabled services, including e content of NIELIT course and online accredition software aiming at widening its reach and boosting employability for rural and urban youth.

In Rajasthan, the two-day northern region round table consultation on the effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act and POCSO Act began today in Jaipur in collaboration with Rajathan State Legal Service Authority and UNICEF. Supreme Court justice Madan B. Lokur inaugurated the consultation meet. The representatives of the judicial, administration, police, child protection committees and NGO from the Punjab, Hariyana, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh and Rajasthan are participating in the consultation meet.

The Haryana government has decided to open canteens offering meals at subsidised rates to registered construction workers under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana at 23 locations in the state. This was disclosed by Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nayab Singh, after presiding over a review meeting of the Department at Chandigarh yesterday.

The Odisha government has increased the pension of freedom fighters of the State. A statement issued by the Chief Minister's office said, the pension of jailed freedom fighters, who also receive central pension, will get 10 thousand rupees per month, up from the earlier 6 thousand rupees. The freedom fighters who were not jailed and those who took part in the Goa Mukti Andolan, will get pension benefit of 9 thousand rupees instead of 5 thousand rupees.

India’s first private sector small arms manufacturing plant has been inaugurated in Madhya Pradesh to supply world class weapons to the armed forces in line with the India’s defence indigenisation programme. The plant is a joint venture between India’s Punj Lloyd and Israel Weapon Systems. The plant will manufacture four products, namely, X95 carbine and assault rifle, Galil sniper rifle, Tavor assault rifle and Negev Light Machine Gun (LMG). The joint venture company named as Punj Lloyd Raksha Systems will help in replacing the weapons used by the armed forces with sophisticated and high precision products.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Friday that it will soon launch a smartphone app which will allow people to rate the service quality of their call after the call ends. It also announced that it will further bolster the existing 'Do Not Disturb' system, which helps people to avoid calls from telemarketers.

The Army, security forces and police had launched a massive cordon and combing operation in south Kashmir’s Shopian district following the recent militant attacks on policemen and banking facilities. This is the first time in 15 years that the combing operation of this magnitude has been conducted by the security forces. The major objective behind the combing operation is to bring the situation in the Kashmir Valley under control. It is also aimed at exerting pressure on militants and force them to move out of their comfort zone. The environment of the Shopian district with ravines and orchards offers ideal hideouts for militants.

Facebook launched Express WiFi service commercially in India. The Express WiFi offers Internet facility through public hotspots to users in rural parts of India. The social network giant partnered with telecom operator Bharti Airtel that plans to bring an additional 20000 hotspots online. The company previously launched the service commercially in Kenya.

The Centre has declared entire Assam, besides bordering areas of Meghalaya, as a disturbed area, under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), for three more months. In a gazette notification, the Home Ministry cited violence perpetrated by insurgent groups like ULFA, NDFB and others as the reason for enforcing AFSPA for three more months, with effect from the 3rd of this month.

Nepal's first woman Chief Justice Sushila Karki resumed office last evening after the Supreme Court ordered her reinstatement and directed Parliament to put on hold the impeachment motion against her. The court issued the order saying that the impeachment move was against the spirit of the country's Constitution. The order came in response to a writ petition against the motion.

Russia blocks China's social media app WeChat
Russia's telecoms watchdog, Roskomnadzor, has blocked China's popular messaging app WeChat for failing to fulfill the country's Internet regulations. Hong Kong based English daily, South China Morning Post reported that Roskomnadzor, known as the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications has listed WeChat, on the register of prohibited websites.WeChat is China's most popular mobile social media platform with 889 million active users worldwide.
Russia, Turkey and Iran Sign Deal on Safe Zones in Syria
Russia and Iran which are allies of the Syrian regime as well as the rebel supporter Turkey signed a Russia-backed plan for creating safe zones in Syria. The pact which was signed in the Kazakh capital Astana was meant to halt fighting in the war-torn Syria. However, the Syrian government and rebel delegations were not signatories to the agreement. Russia-backed plan to create safe zones in Syria is targeted at further pacification and cessation of hostilities and a halt in fighting in the zones.
China to launch its own encyclopedia as a rival to Wikipedia
China has the plan to launch its own online encyclopedia next year rivaling Wikipedia and Britannica (Britain’s Encyclopaedia). The main objective of this project is to guide public thought. China fears that its citizens who use Wikipedia are being corrupted by foreign influences. Around 20,000 scholars and academics have been tasked to create more than 300,000 entries before launch in 2018.

RBI makes substantial changes in norms for dealing with stressed loan
RBI has made substantial changes in the norms for dealing with stressed loans and warned banks they will be penalised for missing Non-Performing Assets (NPA) resolution timelines. RBI, through a notification, eased the decision making process in the Joint Lenders' Forum and Corrective Action Plan under the 'Framework for Revitalising Distressed Assets in the Economy'. The apex bank also warned that any non-adherence to these instructions and timelines specified under the Framework shall attract monetary penalties on the concerned banks.

NABARD is responsible for providing and regulating facilities like credit for agricultural and industrial development in the rural areas.
RBI tightens Rules for JLFs
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has tightened the rules around making the Joint Lenders’ Forum (JLF) more effective, directing banks not to break any rules and to meet all deadlines. The RBI has said that any breach of rules would attract a monetary penalty. JLFs are meetings held to revitalise stressed assets. In JLF banks attempt to red-flag stress early and check them by putting in place a corrective action plan (CAP).

Forex Reserves Touch Life Time High of $372.73 billion
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s weekly statistical supplement, India’s foreign exchange (Forex) reserves have increased by $1.594 billion to touch a lifetime high of $372.73 billion in the week that ended on April 28. The increase was due to increase in foreign currency assets (FCAs), The reserves had increased by $1.250 billion to $371.14 billion in the previous week.
Reliance, SAP launch 'SARAL GST' solution for taxpayers
Reliance Corporate IT Park Ltd. (RCITPL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with enterprise application software major SAP SE to launch 'SARAL GST' solution for taxpayers. According to the subsidiary of Reliance Industries, the new offering will enable taxpayers to be GST compliant and smoothly access the government's GST System, once GST is rolled out from July 1, 2017.

Kashmir based freelance photographer has bagged prestigious 2016 Wisden-MCC (Melbourne Cricket Council) Cricket ‘Photograph of the Year’ for capturing a stunning image of boys playing cricket at the Nishat garden in the outskirts of Srinagar. With this Saqib Majeed has become the first Kashmiri and second Asian after Atul Kamble to receive the prestigious award. Saqib Majeed is an engineer by profession. Every year MCC publishes a book with a title ‘Wisden Cricketer Almanack’ that includes best sports pictures that were taken across the globe. Ashoka University named Pratap Bhanu Mehta as its Vice Chancellor (VC).The varsity announced that Mehta has been appointed "after conducting an extensive global search".Mehta is a renowned public intellectual and head of Centre for Policy Research, a Delhi-based think-tank.Mehta will take charge from 1 July 2017 at the Sonepat, Haryana-based university. He will be the second VC of the liberal arts university since its inception after Rudrangshu Mukherjee.

India's Shiva Thapa, Sumit Sangwan reach final of Asian Boxing Championships
India's Shiva Thapa and Sumit Sangwan have reached the final of the Asian Boxing Championships in Tashkent . While fourth seed Shiva stunned Olympic bronze-medallist and top seed Dorjnyambuug Otgondalai of Mongolia in a split verdict in 60kg category. Unseded Sumit stormed past second seed Tajik Jakhon Qurbonov in the semifinal of the 91kg category. However, middle weight top seed Vikas Krishan settled for a bronze medal in 75 kg category after giving a walkover in the semifinal to fourth-seeded Korean Lee Dongyun. An Asian Boxing Confederation official said, Vikas Krishan was not there in the weigh-in today morning, therefore his South Korean opponent walked over to the final.
Sindhu awarded 2014 CWG medal prize money 3 years after win
PV Sindhu has now been awarded the prize money for winning a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. At a conclave organised by the Badminton Association of India, ₹1.07 crore of overdue prize money was distributed to shuttlers including Saina Nehwal. Newly-elected BAI President Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed the money after 2014 CWG men's champion Parupalli Kashyap raised the issue.
