Today is International Labour Day

Today is International Labour Day, also known as International Worker's Day or May Day. It is observed on this day every year to promote and encourage the international labour associations. The day marks the victory of workers' movement for eight hours of work. It also aims to pay tribute to workers sacrifices in achieving economic and social rights all over the world.
Maharashtra Day being celebrated across state

Maharashtra Day is being celebrated today across the state with great joy and pride. In an official programme held at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, Governor Che Vidyasagar Rao unfurled the National Flag to mark the celebrations and greeted citizens. He inspected the ceremonial parade and delivered the Maharashtra Day message to the people on this occasion. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was also present on the occasion. While addressing the gathering on the occasion, Governor highlighted the achievements of state government and asserted commitment for comprehensive and inclusive socio-economic development of the State and welfare of its people.
PM Modi holds delegation level talks with Turkey's President in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding delegation level talks with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New Delhi. A number of agreements are expected to be signed in several areas after the talks. Key bilateral and regional issues, including India's NSG membership bid and ways to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism and trade are expected to be discussed.
Haryana govt to set up 15 solid waste management clusters
Haryana Government has decided to set up 15 integrated solid waste management clusters to deal with solid waste in urban areas. Out of these, electricity would be generated from solid waste in three clusters and manure from the remaining 12 clusters. Giving this information at Chandigarh an official spokesman said that a solid waste management plant is being set up at Faridabad at a cost of Rs 330 crore.

Indian Railways to Track Wagons and Coaches with RFID tags
Leveraging information technology in a big way, the Indian Railways is set to make use of the radio-frequency identification tags (RFID) for tracking of wagons, coaches and locomotives to ensure the effective and transparent functioning of the system. For this purpose, the RFID tags have been designed by the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) at an estimated cost of Rs 1000 per tag. For the first phase of implementation of this project, the Railways have sanctioned a sum of Rs 57 crore.

Kerala organizes first ever transgender athletic meet
Kerala has organized the country's first transgender one-day athletic meet at Thiruvananthapuram in which 132 participants from 12 districts participated. Kerala Sports Minister A. C. Moideen has inaugurated the event at the Central Stadium. Member of Parliament A Sampath and Member Legislative Assembly V S Sivakumar were also present during the inaugural function.

Assam gets its first Shatabdi Express
Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain on Sunday flagged off Assam's first Shatabdi Express from Dibrugarh. "There was a long-standing demand for better rail connectivity with Guwahati from Dibrugarh and the Dibrugarh-Guwahati Shatabdi Express would fulfill that demand of the people," said the Minister. Gohain further urged the people to take care of railway property.

UP govt to introduce e-challans for payment of road taxes
In order to keep a check on touts at Regional Transport Offices (RTO), the Yogi Adityanath government is planning to introduce the system of e-challans for payment of road taxes. "We have set a deadline of 100 days and we are confident of attaining the objective within time," said Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Swatantra Dev Singh.

Maha 1st state to use automated weather stations for farmers
Maharashtra on Sunday became the first state to install first-of-its-kind automated weather stations for farmers in the region. The state government aims to install a total of 2,065 such units at the village/mandal level across Maharashtra. The machines are designed to accurately predict rainfall patterns, levels of humidity and also to guide the farmers on the best crop to cultivate.

AIIMS becomes India's first public hospital for eye tumors
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is India's first public hospital to start plaque brachytherapy facility for the treatment of eye tumors.
ii. The facility is a form of local radiation delivered to the eye through a radioactive device which is attached to the eye for a temporary period of time. The move will benefit children suffering from retinoblastoma, which is a form of eye cancer, and adults suffering from ocular melanoma.
‘Digi Yatra’ initiative to make flying simpler
The Ministry of Civil Aviation under the proposed “Digi Yatra” initiative is looking forward to make boarding pass and security check-ins digital at airports using Aadhaar and mobile phones. Under this initiative, a digital mode for airport entry and verification of passengers would be used. The move is aimed to ease the security and boarding procedure. In a sum, the initiative aims to make the whole air travel experience completely digital. According to the civil aviation minister Jayant Sinha, the proposed initiative would not require any paperwork and the traveller will be securely identified through Aadhaar number, passport or other documents. The ministry is now working on establishing a uniform set of standards and protocols which can be applied across the system. The ministry expects to roll out the initiative in the coming months.
Prime Minister inaugurates International Basava Convention
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled translated volumes of Vachana in 23 Indian languages on the occasion of Basava Jayanti. The 23 Vachana volumes were edited by late M M Kalburgi and have been translated into other languages by more than 200 people. Prime Minister also released the digital version of the work. This is the first ever celebration of Basava Jayanti at the national level in New Delhi.
India to give Rs 35 cr to children of freedom fighters in Bangladesh
India will give Rs. 35 crore rupees to children of freedom fighters in Bangladesh under the new ‘Muktijodha scholarship’ scheme in the next five years. Under the scheme, students at higher secondary level will get a one-time grant of Tk 20,000 (Rs 15,370) and students at the undergraduate level will get a grant of Tk 50,000 (Rs 38,430). In addition, all freedom fighters will be eligible for multiple entries on Indian visa for a period of five years. Also, every year 100 of them will be entitled to free medical treatment in Indian hospitals.
Scientists at IIT Create Low Cost Solar Cells using Jamun
Scientists at IIT Roorkee have used Indian summer fruit, Jamun, to create low cost and more efficient solar cells. To create the solar cells, the researchers made use of naturally occurring pigment present in jamun as an inexpensive photosensitizer for Dye Sensitised Solar Cells (DSSCs) or Gratzel cells. Gratzel cells are nothing but thin film solar cells made of a porous layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated photoanode, a layer of dye molecules that are capable of absorbing sunlight, an electrolyte for regenerating the dye, and a cathode. The above components of the Gratzel cell form a sandwich-like structure with the dye molecule playing a crucial role through its ability to absorb visible light.
Real Estate Act comes into effect
The Real Estate Act which aims to protect the interests of homebuyers by ensuring transparency has come into effect. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) has asked all the states and Union Territories to implement the Act with letter and spirit. Since land is a state subject, real estate sector comes within the ambit of the state governments.

According to media reports, Shri Nidhi has resigned in protest of impeachment motion registered against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Nepal's first female chief justice. Member of Parliament from ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre) has registered an impeachment motion at the parliament secretariat yesterday against Chief Justice Karki alleging her interference in the jurisdiction of executive and failing to issue verdicts without being prejudiced.

RBI asks ARCs to have a minimum net corpus of Rs100 crore by 2019
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked all the existing asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) to have a minimum net owned fund (NOF) of Rs100 crore by March 2019. This decision has been taken by RBI in accordance with its last bi-monthly monetary policy in which it had proposed to stipulate a minimum NOF of Rs100 crore taking into consideration the enhanced role and greater cash based transactions carried out by ARCs.

Joshna Chinappa becomes 1st Indian to win Asian Squash title
Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa on Sunday defeated compatriot Dipika Pallikal in the women's singles final to become the first Indian to clinch the Asian Squash Championship title. Chinappa defeated Pallikal 13-15, 12-10, 11-13, 11-4, 11-4 in the 78-minute long final. In the men's final, Saurav Ghosal finished as the runner-up after losing to number one seed, Max Lee.
Jehan Daruvala becomes 1st Indian to take pole in FIA F3 European Championship
Jehan Daruvala, in his rookie season at the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, is already making waves. The 18-year-old product of Force India Academy, became the first Indian to take pole in the F3 European series, securing the top spot on the starting grid for Race 1 of the second round of the championship in Monza, Italy. However, he was unable to translate that into a race victory, and finished the hard-fought race in second place, behind his Carlin Racing teammate Lando Norris of the UK.

In Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu today kick started the Oorja CAPF under-19 football talent hunt tournament at Naharlagun. ITBP, North East frontier is organizing the tournament. Mr. Khandu said that Arunachal has no lack of sporting talent but lacks infrastructure. He said, events like Oorja tournaments will help exploit the sporting potentials hidden in the backward places.
Mercedes' Bottas claims maiden Grand Prix win in Russia
Mercedes' Finnish Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas claimed his first ever Grand Prix victory after winning the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday. Bottas edged Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel by 0.6 seconds with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen finishing third and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton ending in the fourth place.

In Tennis, Leander Paes won the Tallahassee Challenger title of the men's doubles but Ramkumar Ramanathan had to be content with a runner-up finish in the singles' event in Florida. The top-seeded Indo-American pair Paes and Scott Lipsky came from behind to pip Argentine third seeds Leonardo Mayer and Maximo Gonzalez 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 in the summit clash. This is Paes' 2nd Challenger level title of the season.
