The International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day 2017 was observed across the world on 26 April 2017. The Day commemorates the explosion at the Ukraine's Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 which spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Due to the explosion, nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to the radiation.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has categorically stated that the Central Government has no plan to impose any tax on agricultural income. In a statement, Mr Jaitley said, he has read the paragraph in Niti Aayog's Report entitled 'Income tax on Agriculture Income'. Clearing any confusion on the subject, the Minister said, as per the Constitutional Allocation of Powers, the Central Government has no jurisdiction to impose tax on agricultural income.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed performance of key infrastructure sectors including roads, railways, airports, ports and coal. The review meeting, held yesterday, was attended by top officials from the Prime Minister's Office, NITI Ayog and all infrastructure Ministries. It was noted that remarkable progress has been made in several areas and infrastructure sectors. In a broad overview of the progress in the roads and railways sectors, Mr Modi called for a consolidated approach to existing projects, and working towards their completion within strict timelines. The meeting was informed that the highest ever average daily construction rate of 130 kilometre has been achieved for rural roads under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. Over 11,600 additional habitations have been connected with roads in 2016-17. Over 4,000 kilometres rural roads have been constructed using green technology during the period.
Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari has said, countries that have invested in education, built strong consumer economies, and have democratic institutions that can deal with social change will benefit more from new technologies. Mr Ansari said this while delivering a Lecture at the Yerevan State University in Armenia today. He said, some of the newer technologies that would impact on human progress relate to energy, cyber technology, robotics, artificial intelligence, quantum mechanics, gene-editing and space exploration. He said, all of these have geopolitical implications in the future.
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) today said it has signed an agreement with Etihad and Jet Airways to attract more visitors to the state and to leverage on the airline's expanding international network. MTDC said in a release issued in Mumbai on Tuesday that under the MoU, there will be joint marketing activities to promote Maharashtra as a leisure destination. It added that both the aviation groups would also provide information to its users on less-explored but high potential destinations in Maharashtra.
The government has announced the names of ten new Iconic places under the Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative. Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) is an initiative of Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation under Swachh Bharat Mission. The ten new iconic places that will be undertaken in Phase II of Swachh Iconic Places initiative are: Gangotri, Yamunotri. Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain), Char Minar (Hyderabad), Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assissi (Goa), Adi Shankaracharya’s abode Kaladi in Ernakulam, Gomateshwar in Shravanbelgola, Baijnath Dham (Devghar), Gaya Tirth (Bihar) and Somnath temple in Gujarat.
Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of thirty lakh rupees to the kin of each martyred in naxal attack in Sukma attack. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow yesterday. Two jawans, one each from Etah and Muzaffarnagar districts of the state were martyred in one of the deadliest attacks by naxals in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.
India and Sri Lanka today signed an MoU on economic co-operation. The agreement was exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Sri Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi. Earlier, the two leaders held a meeting at Hyderabad House. In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi said, he held comprehensive talks with Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on ways to strengthen India-Sri Lanka ties for the benefit of the citizens.
Joint operational doctrine aimed at providing deeper operational synergies among the tri-services was unveiled by the chairman of the chiefs of staff committee (COSC) and Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba in presence of Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat and IAF Chief B S Dhanoa. The doctrine is aimed at coherently dealing with all possible security threats faced by India such as conventional and proxy wars. This document is the second edition of the joint doctrine. The first edition of the document was released around eight years ago.
The international conference on Dara Shikoh: Reclaiming Spiritual Legacy of India will be held on 27 April and 28 April 2017 in New Delhi. The conference will be organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). The international conference aims at presenting Dara Shikoh's contribution and initiatives in bringing about spiritual homogenisation of Hinduism and Islam and thereby building a cohesive social and cultural edifice of India. The conference will also see the participation of eminent scholars, academics and historians from the US, Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and India.
Haryana Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Om Parkash Dhankar announced that compensation at the rate of 12,000 rupees per acre will be given to the farmers whose wheat crop has been completely burnt due to any reason. Mr Dhankar was interacting with media persons after the meeting of BJP State Executive Committee in Karnal yesterday. He urged the farmers not to burn the wheat stubble in the fields and done the sowing of cotton with zero tillage machine.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has found an 80-metre-long tunnel being dug through a tea garden by suspected cattle smugglers near the Chopra-Fatehpur border outpost. The tunnel was found in north Bengal adjacent to Kishanganj. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, Devi Sharan Singh told reporters at the BSF's sectoral headquarters in Kisanganj that the smugglers were digging the tunnel under the fence in order to overcome the problem of smuggling cattle to Bangladesh due to fencing of the border.
US military has started deploying the THAAD missile defence system in South Korea, amid high tensions over neighbouring North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions. China has expressed its serious concern about the move. The Thaad system is designed to protect against threats from Pyongyang. Hundreds of local residents protested against the deployment, as vehicles carrying equipment arrived at the site in the south of the country.
The White House has named a retired Marine major general Randolph Ailes as the new Director of the Secret Service. Ailes will oversee an agency that for years has been beset with a series of high-profile embarrassments. Ailes, who was in the Marine Corps for 35 years, has been the acting deputy commissioner of Customs and Border Protection and previously oversaw the agency's air and marine division. Ailes is replacing Joseph Clancy, who retired from the agency a second time in March.

The agreements were signed following Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari’s talks with Armenia’s top leadership including President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian. The meeting saw both sides agree on the fact that the international community must unite and speak with one voice against terrorism and not have double standards on the issue. The World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO/AFRO) announced on 24 April 2017 that Ghana, Kenya and Malawi will take part in a WHO-coordinated pilot implementation programme. The programme will make the world’s first malaria vaccine available in selected areas, beginning in 2018. The injectable vaccine, RTS,S, was developed to protect young children from the most deadly form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
China’s first home-built aircraft carrier hit water
China’s first home-built aircraft carrier hit the water today boosting its military presence amid rising tensions in the region. China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the Vice -Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Fan Changlong, attended the ship launching ceremony of 001A. It is the country's second aircraft carrier, after the Liaoning, and the first to be made domestically. It comes amid heated rhetoric between the US and North Korea in recent days.
President Donald Trump has sent to the Senate Indian-American Vishal J Amin's name to be the US' new Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator. If confirmed by the Senate, Amin, who is currently Senior Counsel on House Judiciary Committee, would succeed Daniel Marti in the White House. Earlier this month, Trump had tapped him as the US' new Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator- dubbed as 'IPczar'- to coordinate US law-enforcement strategy around copyright, patents and trademarks.
The Chinese government in April 2017 prohibited parents from choosing baby names like Islam, Medina, Jihad and Quran for their children, thereby strengthening its hold on Muslims living in western China. The ban is a part of the government’s effort to curb religious fervor in the region. Western China or the western region of Xinjiang is home to over 10 million Uighurs, a Muslim minority group. The government fears the region to breed Islamic extremism, violence and separatist thought.
The SEBI board will meet today to discuss stricter norms to check any flow of black money into the stock market through controversy-ridden P-Notes as well as initiate steps to allow mutual fund investments via e-wallets. It will be the first meeting of the SEBI Board under the chairmanship of Ajay Tyagi who took charge on March 1. Air India said today it has opened booking for its first flight under the Regional Connectivity Scheme to be operated on the Shimla-New Delhi route by its subsidiary Alliance Air. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the maiden flight under the government's ambitious plan to provide connectivity to far and remote areas of the country. Over 45 unserved and under-served airports would be connected under the scheme- UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik)- that seeks to make flying more affordable.
Wheat production in the country is set to touch a record 98 million tonnes in the ongoing 2016-17 crop year ending this June, on account of higher yields. In its second estimate, the Agriculture Ministry had pegged a record wheat output of 96.64 Million tonnes for the current crop year as against the actual output of 92.29 Million tonne last year. The crop yields are better this year as weather condition during February-March remained favourable.
Vani Jairam, the versatile playback singer in the South Indian film industry, was presented with the Ghantasala national award on 23 April 2017 at a function held in Andhra Pradesh. The award is instituted by the Ghantasala National Art Academy in Andhra Pradesh. The 71-year-old singer received the award from A. Ramalingeswara Rao, a High court judge in Andhra Pradesh and R Ananda Bhaskar, Rajya Sabha member from the congress party.

Superstar Aamir Khan was on 25 April 2017 honoured with the 75th Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Award for his film Dangal, which was one of the biggest hits of 2016. The award was bestowed upon him by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. By receiving the award, Aamir Khan broke his own record of not being part of any awards functions. Indian businessman appointed Kazakhstan's Honorary Consul
The government of Kazakhstan has appointed the Chairman of Kirtilals Jewellers Suraj Shantakumar as its Honorary Consul for the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Kazakhstan's Ambassador to India Bulat Sarsenbayev said he was confident that the Honorary Consul's office would promote the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

Manpreet Kaur wins shot put gold at Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet
Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur on 24 April 2017 clinched a gold medal in the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet in Jinhua, China. Manpreet came up with a best throw of 18.86 metre, a national record. In 2015, she made a national record after throwing a shot put at the distance of 17.96 metre. With the win, the shot putter also acquired the No 1 spot in the world rankings. With the performance, Manpreet also qualified for the IAAF World Championships to be held in August 2017 in London, UK.
India wins 16 medals at US Open karate Championship
India finished with a rich haul of three gold, two silver and 11 bronze medals at the US Open Karate Championship held in Las Vegas. Shaifali Agarwal, Abhishek Sengupta won a gold medal, a silver in two different individual events. India also won a gold medal in the team event. The Indian team was led by Sensei Yashpal Singh Kalsi. The Other members of the Indian contingent were Abhishek Sengupta, Rantej Singh, Harcharan Singh Chowhan and Shaifali Agarwal.
