National Safe Motherhood Day - 11th April

National Safe Motherhood Day is observed on April 11 every year. National Safe Motherhood Day 2016 is an initiative of the White Ribbon Alliance India, to enforce that women must have the availability and adequate access to care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal services. The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India (WRA India) was formed when Centre for Catalyzing Change, an NGO, brought together a group of individuals and organizations to advocate safe motherhood in India.
Bengaluru grade No:1 city in India on best paying city for professionals :

Bengaluru has been ranked the top-paying city for professionals in India with an average yearly salary of ₹14.6 lakh, by the Randstad Salary Trends Study 2017. It was followed by Mumbai and Hyderabad with average yearly salaries of ₹14.2 lakh and ₹13.6 lakh respectively. Java programmers are the best-paid professionals in the country, with an average salary of ₹18 lakh.
'Nakshe' web portal launched by Govt for precised Indian map :

The Central government on Monday launched 'Nakshe', a dedicated web portal allowing Indians to download accurate Indian maps prepared by the Survey of India. Aadhaar number, however, has been made mandatory to allow access to the free maps "only to Indians", Union Minister Harsh Vardhan said. Notably, users would be able to download three maps per Aadhaar card per day.
Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill passed in Lok Sabha :

The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016, which will impose stiffer penalties for traffic rules violations. The bill proposes a three-year jail term for parents of minors caught driving and causing fatal accidents, and a ten-fold increase in compensation for families of accident victims. The bill also seeks to make issuance of driving licenses online.
Underwater conference on marine pollution held in Kerala :
The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of five firms in Kerala held a 20-minute underwater conference against marine pollution and global warming in the Arabian Sea on Monday. The CEOs dived into the water, 50 metres off the beach, to reach a U-shaped table set in the ocean bed for the conference. They pledged to 'protect the ocean and marine life'.

Mobile app to be launched by Maharashtra govt for black-yellow taxis in the state :
The Maharashtra government is in the process of launching a cab-hailing mobile application for the state's black and yellow taxis within next three months. State Transport Minister Diwakar Raote also said that the government is considering providing AC services to customers of the black-yellow taxis and will begin the AC fitting work with drivers who have bought a new car.

Rs 23,500 crore fund released by govt for States under MGNREGS scheme :
Ministry of Rural Development has released nearly 23,500 crore rupees to the States as first tranche for this Financial Year, under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The amount released includes all pending liabilities as on 31st March, 2017. It is also to ensure priority work on water conservation measures. The Government is laying considerable emphasis on Water Conservation and Water Management works under MGNREGS. All States have been advised to ensure that such works are taken up wherever required with appropriate technical and scientific scrutiny.

Haryana Govt plans to boost number of Science Clubs :
Haryana Government has decided to increase the number of Science Clubs being operated in Sanskriti Schools from 20 to 200 to scale up the interest of youth in science and technology. Stating this at Chandigarh yesterday evening, Science and Technology Minister Anil Vij said that financial assistance to these Clubs will also be enhanced from 15,000 to 50,000 rupees. He said that directions have been given to enhance the amount of Haryana Vigyan Ratna and Haryana Yuva Vigyan Ratna Awards to bring them at par with Central Government.

Tertiary Cancer Centre inaugurated today in Arunachal Pradesh :
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chawna Mein today inaugurated Tertiary Cancer Centre at Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences at Naharlagun. The Tertiary Cancer Centre includes the Installation of a Babatron Cobalt Therapy Machine.
Terming the occasion as historic, the Deputy Chief Minister said, Arunachal is now equipped with the highest level of cancer treatment facilities. He said, with the commissioning of the Tertiary Cancer Centre cancer, patients can avail the three basic modalities of cancer treatment, namely Surgery, Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy in the state itself.

India's first ever micro-drama festival held at Delhi :
India's first ever micro-drama festival, named Thespis, was held on 9 April 2017 in New Delhi. The longest play of the festival ran for not more than 10 minutes and the shortest one lasted for only 42 seconds. The day-long event saw screening of 28 independent plays at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Art. Named after Thesois of Icaria, the festival was organised by theatre group 'Vriksh'.

PM Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull on Monday inaugurated the world's most advanced nanobiotechnology research centre, a joint venture between TERI and Deakin University, Australia. The TERI-Deakin Nanobiotechnology Centre, established in Gurugram, aims to support and nurture innovative ideas for existing problems of Indian agriculture among other sectors.

Co-branded prepaid card to be launched by Manappuram Finance with YES Bank :
In its efforts to promote digital financial transactions, the Kerala-based NBFC Manappuram Finance will launch its own co-branded prepaid card in tie-up with YES Bank.The 'Manappuram YES Bank Prepaid Money Card' can be pre-loaded up to a maximum amount of Rs. 50,000 and then be used to withdraw money from all ATMs.
As the card works on the popular MasterCard and RuPay networks, it can also be used for online transactions and at merchant establishments with PoS terminals. The company will issue the prepaid cards to its entire base of 20 lakh customers and link their existing gold loan accounts to the card. This will enable them to withdraw money from ATMs across India.

Axis Bank cuts base rate by 10 bps :
Private-sector lender Axis Bank on Monday trimmed its base rate by 10 basis points (bps) to 9.15%. The cut follows those by State Bank of India (SBI), which dropped its base rate by 15 bps to 9.1%, and HDFC Bank that lowered the benchmark rate by 25 bps to 9%. Despite the recent series of cuts, the lowest base rate in the system —HDFC Bank’s 9% — is equivalent to highest one-year marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR).

CBDT allots PAN and TAN in a day for ease of doing business :
To improve the ease of doing business for newly incorporated companies, Central Board of Direct Taxes has tied up with Ministry of Corporate Affairs to issue Permanent Account Number and Tax Deduction Account Number in one day. According to an official release, applicant companies submit a common application form on MCA portal and once the data of incorporation is sent to CBDT by MCA, the PAN and TAN are issued immediately without any further intervention of the applicant.
eBay India acquired by Flipkart for  USD 1.4 billion :
India’s largest online retailer Flipkart on 10 April 2017 raised a total fund of USD 1.4 billion from China’s Tencent, US-based e-commerce firm eBay and software maker Microsoft. Moreover, it also acquired eBay’s Indian operations in a move to build a ‘mahagathbandhan’ of global tech giants to counter Amazon.  This new funding round valued Flipkart at  USD 11.6 billion now. This is about 24 per cent lower than the USD 15.2 billion valuation it got in 2015 based on the funds it raised at that time.

6 agreements signed by India with Australia including cooperation in civil aviation security :
India and Australia on 10 April 2017 signed 6 agreements to boost the bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The signed agreements include cooperation in combating international terrorism and transnational organised crime. These agreements were signed during Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s four-day visit to India. He will be in India from 9 April to 12 April 2017. This is Turnbull’s first visit to India since he assumed office in 2015.

Mukta Dutta Tomar replaces Gurjit Singh as India's Ambassador to Germany :
Mukta Dutta Tomar was on 7 April 2017 appointed as India's Ambassador to Federal Republic of Germany. She is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Tomar succeeds Gurjit Singh who was holding the post till March 2017. Tomar is a 1984 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. She is presently working as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Tomar also served as the Consul General of India in Chicago.

Sakshi Malik moves up in World Wrestling rankings of 5th spot :

India's Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has climbed up to world number 5 in women's 58kg freestyle in the latest standings released by the United World Wrestling. Wrestler Sandeep Tomar also broke into the top 10 of men's freestyle wrestling, reaching the seventh position in the 57kg category. Malik and Tomar are preparing for May's Asian Championships.
