Vocabulary Tricks Part 33: Terrorism

Terrorism is a scourge that affects the world. It refers to extortion, kidnapping and killing to fulfill demands of the perpetrators of terror. Terrorism destabilizes the sense of fraternity among the people. Terrorism is pervasive in our country.
Terrorism is encouraged by some countries who provide money, arms, and ammunition to terrorists.
There is a need to have stringent laws against terrorism. Some repressive measures should be taken by all the countries. It is not an easy task to combat terrorism. The countries which support terrorism should be quarantined from the global community.

WORDS WITH MEANING AND ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES

Scourge

Meaning: A person or thing that causes great trouble or suffering.
Example: Rabbits are considered pests, being a scourge on crops and the natural environment.
Synonyms: affliction, bane, curse, plague, menace, evil

Extortion

Meaning: The practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.
Example: He used bribery and extortion to build himself a huge mansion.
Synonyms: demanding money with menaces, blackmail

Perpetrators

Meaning: A person who carries out a harmful, illegal, or immoral act.
Example: Few of the perpetrators have been brought to justice.

Destabilizes

Meaning: Upset the stability of a region or system.
Example: It has a destabilizing effect on the stock market.
Synonyms: undermine, weaken, impair, damage, subvert, sabotage

Fraternity

Meaning: Friendship and mutual support within a group.
Example: Our need is harmony, fraternity and solidarity among the people.
Synonyms: brotherhood, fellowship, kinship, friendship, companionship

Pervasive

Meaning:Spreading widely throughout an area or a group of people.
Example: This phenomenon is not just limited to a few companies, but is widespread and pervasive.
Synonyms: prevalent, penetrating, pervading, permeating, extensive

Ammunition

Meaning: A supply or quantity of bullets and shells.
Example: The shop will supply you with ammunition.
Synonyms: projectiles, missiles, rounds, shot, slugs

Stringent

Meaning: Strict, precise, and exacting.
Example: Stringent guidelines on air pollution.
Synonyms: firm, rigid, rigorous, severe, harsh

Repressive

Meaning: Restrictive or oppressive.
Example: People are fed up with regimes that are repressive.
Synonyms: crushing, tyrannical, tyrannous, iron-fisted, domineering

Combat

Meaning: Take action to reduce or prevent something bad or undesirable.
Example: The government should make an effort to combat drug trafficking.

Quarantined

Meaning: Isolated or detained
Example: Patients are considered contagious and should remain in quarantine.
Synonyms: separation, setting apart, keeping apart, sorting out
