Zero Discrimination Day - 1st March

Organizations like the United Nations (UN) actively promote the day with various activities to celebrate everyone’s right to live a full life with dignity regardless of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, skin color, height, weight, profession, education, and beliefs.
Many countries have laws against discrimination but it's still a problem in all layers of society in every country in the world. Many countries have and still use discrimination as a way of governing.
The symbol for Zero Discrimination Day is the butterfly, widely used by people to share their stories and photos as a way to end discrimination and work towards positive transformation.
Sale of Pepsi, Coca-Cola products prohibited by TN retailers from March 1st today :

Retailers in Tamil Nadu will boycott global cola giants Pepsi and Coca-Cola, along with all their other soft-drink products, from today (March 1), citing health and environmental concerns. The decision, taken by major traders' associations, aims to promote home-grown businesses and products. Notably, there are 20 lakh shops affiliated with the trade unions, most of which have joined the boycott.

Rare Disease Day observed on 28th February thus UP has most rare disease patients in India :

With over 1.1 crore affected people, Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of patients of rare disease in India, according to a report. Sikkim has the lowest number of affected people with a little under 36,500 patients. The number of people suffering from rare diseases is around 7 crore in India and around 35 crore around the world.

Assam govt to appoint teacher in all highschools to monitor cleanliness :

The Assam government has decided to appoint a teacher in all highschools to monitor cleanliness. This decision has been taken at cabinet meeting held in Guwahati this evening in presence of Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal.
State Transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, that teachers will be appointed in highschools under Swachh Bharat Mission. He said, they will be responsible in maintaining cleanliness. The cabinet has also decided to increase compensation from 1 lakh rupees to 4 lakh rupees to the family members of those who killed by elephants.

29th International Yoga Festival begins toady in Rishikesh :
Uttarakhand Governor K K Paul today inaugurated the 29th edition of the InternationaI Yoga Festival at Rishikesh, and said the event was growing in stature and helping the state become a sought-after destination for spiritual tourism.
"It is from Devbhumi Uttarakhand that Yoga originated and has now spread in the entire world. It is wonderful to see, year after year, so many people from across the world and from every walk of life gather here to celebrate this festival of Yoga and Spirituality," he said.
The week-long event, jointly organised by the AYUSH ministry, Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, Parmarth Niketan and Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam, was inaugurated at Parmarth Niketan along the banks of the Ganges river.

Govt plans on performance reports of officers' to be filled online :
The Centre has decided to amend the rules to allow online filing of performance reports of IAS and IPS officers. The move will reportedly help in checking delayed submission of the confidential reports and claims of bias in giving low ratings to an officer. The rules would be applicable to members of all India services – IAS, IPS and IFoS.

New agency called VOICE  to be formed for victims of crime by immigrants in US :
US President Donald Trump on Monday said he has ordered Homeland Security to create an office called VOICE – Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement. Trump gave examples of Americans in the audience whose loved ones were killed by illegal immigrants. He condemned the shooting of an Indian engineer while adding that the US would be protected against "radical Islamic terrorism."

Russia, China veto UN sanctions on Syria :
Russia and China have vetoed a UN resolution to impose sanctions against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons, according to reports. It is the seventh time Russia has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to protect the Syrian government. Notably, Syria agreed to destroy its chemical weapons in 2013 under an agreement negotiated between Russia and the US.

Panel set by Reserve Bank of India to review cyber threats :
Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday announced setting up of the inter-disciplinary standing committee on cyber security to review the threats inherent in existing and emerging technology. The 11-member committee will study the adoption of various security standards and protocols, and suggest appropriate policy interventions for strengthening cyber security and resilience, the central bank said.

India's indigenous supersonic interceptor missile tested successfully :
India on Wednesday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed supersonic interceptor missile capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude. The interceptor was engaged against a Prithvi missile taking the trajectory of a hostile missile. "The mission was excellent and it was a direct hit," a DRDO official said after its second successful test in a month.

Harvard University gives Humanitarian award to Pop Singer Rihanna :
Singer Rihanna has been honoured with the 2017 Harvard Humanitarian of the Year award. She received the award for her work in her native island of Barbados and the charities she has founded over the years. "All you need to do is help one person, expecting nothing in return. To me, that is humanitarian," she said during her speech.
Dipa Karmakar, 6 other Olympians from NE states felicitated by govt  :
The Union Government on Tuesday felicitated Dipa Karmakar, besides six other Olympians from northeast states, as part of their outreach to sportspersons from those states. The athletes, who were awarded ₹2 lakh each, included women's hockey team captain P Sushila Chanu, archer Bombayla Devi and boxer Shiva Thapa. Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Jitendra Singh were present at the event.

N K Sinha takes additional charge of Tourism Secretary :
Culture Secretary NK Sinha was today given additional charge of the post of Secretary, Ministry of Tourism. An order issued by Personnel Ministry said, the competent authority has approved the assignment of additional charge to Mr Sinha, a 1980 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, with immediate effect.
The vacancy has come up after superannuation of Vinod Zutshi yesterday.G Latha Krishna Rao has been given additional charge of Secretary, Tribal Affairs. She is Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Sumit Mullick becomes Chief Secretary of Maharashtra succeeding Swadheen Kshatriya :
Senior IAS officer Sumit Mullick was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. Mullick will succeed Swadheen Kshatriya, who was due for retirement on 31st of January, but was given a month's extension.
According to an official from the CMO, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis signed the file on Mullick today morning and was handed over the charge in the evening.

Jitu Rai won gold medal in 50m air pistol setting world record at ISSF World Cup :
Indian shooter Jitu Rai won the gold medal in the 50-metre air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Delhi today, with a world record finals' score of 230.1. This is Jitu's third medal in the competition, having won a gold earlier in the 10-metre air pistol mixed team event, and a bronze in the men's 10-metre air pistol.
Indian junior para shooter Avani Lekhara sets junior world record WSPS world cup :
India's 15-year-old para shooter Avani Lekhara shot a junior world record score of 244.4 at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Al Ain, UAE, winning a silver medal at the competition last week. Another Indian shooter, Pooja Agarwal, also won a silver medal at the tournament. Notably, both Indian shooters were making their international debuts at the competition.
Taarak Mehta famous gujarati writer passes away at age 87 :
Gujarati writer Taarak Mehta, best known for his columns which were adapted for TV sitcom 'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah', died on Wednesday in Ahmedabad at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness. Born in 1929, Mehta has written over 80 books, six popular Gujarati plays and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2015.
Congress  leader Haji Abdul Salam also Rajya Sabha MP passes away at age 69 :
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Haji Abdul Salam passed away in Imphal on Tuesday night following a brief illness, his family said. The 69-year-old leader was the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of the Rajya Sabha from Manipur. He was a member of the upper house since 2014 and was also elected to the Manipur Assembly thrice.
