World Water Day - 22nd March

Theme : Why waste water?  (2017)
World Water Day is an annual event celebrated on 22 March. The day focuses attention on the importance of universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries. The day also focuses on advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
World Water Day is supported by stakeholders across the globe. Many organizations promote clean water for people and sustainable aquatic habitats. Events such as theatrical and musical celebrations, educational events, and campaigns to raise money for access to clean and affordable water are held worldwide on or close to 22 March.
UP CM orders to ban cow smuggling in state :
Newly-appointed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday ordered police officials to enforce a complete ban on cow smuggling in the state. He further directed officials to prepare an action plan for the closure of illegal slaughterhouses across the state. Notably, beef and the slaughter of cattle are illegal in many states across India including Uttar Pradesh.

Majuli of Assam to become India's 1st carbon neutral district :

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has launched an initiative to develop Majuli, the world's largest river island, as India's first carbon neutral district and a biodiversity heritage site. "Majuli is facing existential crisis and therefore initiatives like designating carbon neutral district and biodiversity heritage site are the need of the hour to preserve its rich heritage and legacy," said the CM.

Railway Dept Report : Aadhaar not mandatory for train tickets of senior citizens
Aadhaar has not been made mandatory for senior citizens to avail concessions in train tickets, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. He, however, added that the Railways has initiated a process to create a database of senior citizens based on Aadhaar details on a voluntary basis to prevent misuse of the facility.
CBSE introduced new 2-semester exam system from Class VI onwards :
The CBSE-affiliated schools will now follow a uniform assessment scheme by introducing a two-semester system from Class 6 onwards. Under the new system, schools will conduct two periodic tests of 10 marks, and the half-yearly written examination will account for 80. This system will make students more confident about facing the Class 10 board examinations, said CBSE Chairman RK Chaturvedi.
UP Police orders to form anti-Romeo squad in Lucknow :
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday issued orders to constitute anti-Romeo squad in 11 districts of the Lucknow zone to prevent eve-teasing. As per reports, some men were arrested in Lucknow and boys standing outside girls' schools and colleges were hauled up in Meerut and questioned. "Action under Goonda Act will be taken against wrongdoers," said the police.

Waitlisted passengers can now take next alternative train from April 1 :
Starting from April 1, Railways will let waitlisted passengers travel in the next alternative train going towards the same destination the ticket is booked for. Passengers will be allowed to take Rajdhani or Shatabdi trains even if they booked a ticket for other mail or express trains. No extra charge or difference in the fare will be collected by Railways.
Streets of Juri village in Jharkhand named after most educated girls :
Juri, a village in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district, has initiated the practice of naming its lanes after its most educated girls. Sumita Bhattacharya, who is pursuing a master's degree in history, was picked as the first girl to have a lane named after her. Despite not having a high school, the village's literacy rate is higher than the state average.

Govt recommends to make Aadhaar mandatory for I-T returns
The government on Tuesday proposed to make Aadhaar card mandatory for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for all those who submit their returns after July 1, 2017. Further, Aadhaar number would also be needed while applying for a Permanent Account Number (PAN). According to the proposed bill, PAN cards that are not linked to Aadhaar will be deemed invalid.
Govt plans to disallow cash transaction above Rs.2 lakh :
The Centre on Tuesday proposed to lower the limit of cash transactions to ₹2 lakh from the earlier proposal of ₹3 lakh in the Union Budget. The penalty for violating it will be a fine equivalent to the amount of transaction, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia tweeted. The move aims to discourage cash payments, as well as to curb black money.
Techkriti 2017 to be host in IIT Kanpur from March 23 to 26 :
IIT Kanpur's annual technological and entrepreneurial festival Techkriti, themed "Factualising Fictions" will be held from March 23 to 26. Techkriti will host talks by author Balaji Viswanathan and Padma Shri awardee Vijay Prasad Dimri among others. A Hyperloop exhibition and competitions like RoboWars will also be held. Playback singer Sonu Nigam will perform at Techkriti 2017's final night.
Drive against illegal slaughter houses launched by Uttar Pradesh Govt :
In Uttar Pradesh an intensive drive is being carried out across the state against slaughter houses and retail outlets being run illegally and in violation of the Municipal and Pollution control laws. Actions have been taken against several slaughter houses and about two dozen have been sealed in Ghaziabad, Allahabad, Varanasi, Meerut and Hapur districts.

Bihar Diwas celebrated today with enthusiasm :
The 105th Bihar Diwas is being celebrated today with enthusiasm. It is to commemorate the foundation day of the state. Bihar was was carved out of united Bengal on March 22, 1912. Before that Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa were part of the Bengal province during the British rule. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will inaugurate three day celebrations on the occasion of foundation day of the state. Mr. Kumar would launch the free Wi-Fi in 200 educational institutions in the state during the inaugural event. A number of cultural functions have also been organized.

Aadhaar made mandatory for crop insurance schemes by Maharashtra govt :
The Maharashtra government has made Aadhaar mandatory to farmers for availing crop insurance schemes from the next Kharif season. According to an official communique from the state Agriculture Department, as most of the farmers have bank account either in cooperative or public sector bank, they will now have to link it with the Aadhaar number before June this year to avail crop insurance schemes.
It added that the scheme is applicable to food grain and horticulture sectors. It further stated that with Aadhaar linking there will be no need for any documentation from farmers' side the state.

5th Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav being planned in NE Region from 23 March to 31 :
The Fifth Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav (RSM) – 2017 will be organized in North Eastern Region of India from 23 March to 31 March 2017 by the Union Ministry of Culture.
The festival will be inaugurated at Parade Ground, Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh on 23 March 2017 and will extend to other North Eastern states including Dimapur (Nagaland), Majuli (Assam), Imphal (Manipur), Aizawl (Mizoram), Gangtok (Sikkim), Shillong (Meghalaya and Khowai (Tripura).
The nine days cultural extravaganza will be inaugurated by Governor of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh PadmanabhaBalakrishna.

Iceland consider increase tax over tourism sector :
Iceland is considering ways of raising taxes in the tourism sector or limiting visitors' access to popular tourist destinations. The government is considering to mandate a special license for tour operators and bus companies or hiking the existing levy on hotel rooms. Tourism Minister Thordis Gylfadottir said, "Some areas are simply unable to facilitate one million visitors every year."

Laptops, tablets from 6 Middle East nations on flights banned by UK :
The UK has announced a ban on electronic devices larger than mobiles, including laptops and tablets, from cabin baggage on flights from six Middle Eastern countries. The ban affects travellers from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. This follows reports that the US has imposed similar restrictions on flights originating from several Middle Eastern and North African nations.

Bill on NASA funding, Mars exploration got approval from US President Trump :
US President Donald Trump signed a bill authorising 19(point)5 billion US dollar funding for the NASA programmes and setting a new goal to send humans to Mars. The law, known as the NASA Transition Authorization Act, gives the space agency the funding for fiscal year 2018.
It also asks the agency to create a plan to send a "crewed mission to Mars in the 2030s." Opening a new vista to human exploration of the space, Mr Trump signed the bill in his Oval Office of the White House in the presence of the Vice President Mike Pence.

UN insists wastewater key to solve global water crisis :
The World Water Day is being observed today.UN General Assembly in 1993 designated March 22nd as the World Water Day. United Nations say recycling world's wastewater, almost all of which goes untreated, would ease global water shortages while protecting the environment. Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO has said this in a major report issued on the eve of the World Water Day.

Sebi  approves Hudco on IPO to raise funds :
State-run housing finance company Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (Hudco) has received Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) approval to raise funds through an IPO. IDBI Capital, Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities, SBI Capital Markets and ICICI Securities will manage the company's public issue. Hudco's IPO is a part of the government's disinvestment plan.

Vodafone, Idea merger to worth Rs.13,400 crore : Report
The Managing Director of Idea, Himanshu Kapania, has said that integrating operations of Vodafone and Idea will cost the combined entity around Rs.13,400 crore. However, he said the synergies leading to cost saving will result in a net benefit of Rs.65,000 crore for the merged entity. Idea and Vodafone confirmed their merger on Monday to form India's largest telecom firm.

ISRO commissions world's 3rd largest hypersonic wind tunnel
ISRO commissioned a one-metre hypersonic wind tunnel and shock tunnel, the world's third largest such facility, at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram. Aerospace vehicles re-enter the Earth's atmosphere at high speeds, creating shock waves which can be simulated in the tunnel for optimising aircraft design.

Brian McClendon Vice President of mapping at Uber resigns :
Brian McClendon, the Vice President of maps at Uber, has quit the ride-hailing startup almost two years after joining it. McClendon, who joined Uber after more than 10 years of working at Google, will be moving to Kansas to explore politics. His exit follows a number of top level exits at Uber, including its President and self-driving technology unit's head.

SEBI appoints Madhabi Puri Buch as its Whole Time Member :
Madhabi Puri Buch was on 21 March 2017 appointed as the Whole Time Member of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). She will the office for a period of three years.
This appointment marks the first time that a woman and a person from the private sector was chosen for a key post in SEBI. So far, Members and Chairman at SEBI were mainly appointed from public sector institution such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Indian Administrative Services (IAS).

Upendra Tripathy, the former secretary at Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, was appointed as the full-time interim Director General (IDG) of the International Solar Alliance.
A notification read, “Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, Government of India and Ms. Ségolène Royal, Minister for Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs Government of France jointly decided to appoint Mr. Upendra Tripathy, as the Interim Director General (IDG) of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on a full-time basis.”

Owing to security problem Hong Kong forfeits Davis Cup at Pakistan :
Citing security concerns, Hong Kong is forfeiting its Davis Cup tennis matches against Pakistan, scheduled for next month in Islamabad. The International Tennis Federation said today that it regrets and respectfully disagrees with Hong Kong's decision to pull out of the Zone Group matches.         
The Davis Cup committee had ruled that the Pakistan Sports Complex in the capital could host the April 7-9 second-round encounter. Pakistan hosted matches against Iran in February.

India bags 18 medals in Olympics World Winter Games at Austria :
India’s special athletes continue to make India proud by winning 18 medals so far in the ongoing 2017 Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. The medal tally includes six gold, four silver and eight bronze. The team of 89 differently-abled sports persons of the Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) is participating in the competition. Over 2,600 athletes from 105 nations are taking part in the event.
India's gold came on the third day, yesterday from six special athletes for ‘Alpine skiing’ and ‘snowboarding’. Shamsher Singh won a silver for the country on the first day. 24 year old Singh bagged a silver medal at snow shoeing- form of hiking in the snow with special foot wear-100m race on Sunday. 16-year old Jyoti Bala grabbed bronze medal for the same sport on Monday.
