INS Viraat, Indian Navy's Grand Old Lady, to retire today after 30-year service
- INS Viraat, Indian Navy's flagship aircraft carrier, will retire from service. The aircraft carrier which holds the Guinness Record for the oldest carrier in service was inducted into the Indian Navy on May 12, 1987.
- The ship, famously known as the 'Grand Old Lady', was with the British Royal Navy since 1959 before the Indian government bought it for Rs 6.5 crore in 1987.

- NS Vikramaditya is the only serving aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy and the second one, named Vikrant, is under construction at Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

Vijayawada, Tirupati airports renamed
- The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved proposals to rename the Vijayawada Airport and the Tirupati Airport.
- Vijayawada Airport in Gannavaram has been renamed as ‘Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao-Amaravati Airport’ after the legendary actor and founder of the ruling Telugu Desam Party, and the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
- The Tirupati Airport has been renamed as ‘Sri Venkateswara Airport’ after Lord Venkateswara of the temple town.

Facebook launches SheLeadsTech
- Social networking site Facebook on Wednesday launched a new initiative, SheLeadsTech, to support women-founded or co-founded startups
- It will also be expanding its SheMeansBusiness program that supports women-led small businesses. SheLeadsTech will give women-founded or co-founded start-ups access to a year-long program that provides tools, mentorship and resources.
- The announcement which came ahead of Women's Day aim to bring women on board India's digital revolution in a bigger way.
- India is among the largest user base for Facebook and its affiliate WhatsApp. The country contributes 168 million users to Facebook's 1.86 billion global users, and 200 million to WhatsApp's 1.2 billion monthly active users.

Tirtha Darshan scheme announced by Haryana govt
- A Tirtha Darshan scheme, under which senior citizens of the state will be able to go on pilgrimage within the country on government expenses, was announced in the Haryana Assembly.
- Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar informed the house about the scheme prepared state government, during ongoing budget session of Haryana Vidhan Sabha here.
- Under the scheme, the government would bear the entire cost of the tour of senior citizens belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The scheme is reserved for domiciles of Haryana
- In case of a couple, the expenses of the spouse belonging to BPL family would also be borne by the government. They would also be able to take along an assistant. In case of senior citizens of non-BPL families, the government would bear only 70 per cent of the cost.
- The senior citizens would be selected for the pilgrimage on the basis of draw of lots. There are more than 400 destinations which can be visited under the scheme.

Baichung Bhutia removed as AIFF advisor
- Out of favour with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) due to differences in opinion, former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia is no longer advisor to both the AIFF and President Praful Patel.
- Bhutia was roped in as advisor two years back and has since then been instrumental in bringing India coach Stephen Constantine back and also extending his contract till February 2018.
- Bhutia, it was also learnt, wanted Colm Toal to take over as the India U-17 World Cup team coach after Nicolai Adam was shown the door. But the AIFF decided to pencil in Portuguese Luis Norton de Matos instead.
M P Veerendra Kumar presented Moortidevi award
- Eminent Malayalam author and journalist M P Veerendra Kumar was today presented the 30th Moortidevi award by Bharatiya Jnanpith organisation
- Kumar was chosen for the prestigious award for his Malayalam travelogue Hymavathabhoovil, which dwells upon ancient trails of Indian culture, myth, literature and people strewn in the plains, valleys and mountains of India
- The book also highlights environmental concerns over "fragile mountain ecosystem" and calls for action over lack of water resources and waste disposal systems.
- Kumar, who earlier won the Sahitya Akademi award for the same book, is also the Kerala state unit President of Janata Dal (United).
- Kumar is Chairman and Managing Director of the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi and a Rajya Sabha MP.
- He has served thrice as the chairman of the Press Trust of India (PTI) and is currently a director in the news agency.

- The Moortidevi Award is an annual literary award in India presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith organization for a work which emphasizes Indian philosophy and culture.
