Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The stakes in Punjab and Goa"

  • Stake - a share or a financial involvement in something
  • Herald - to be a sign that something important, and often good, is starting to happen, or to make something publicly known, especially by celebrating or praising it
  • Hectic - full of activity, or very busy and fast
  • Campaign - a planned group of especially political, business, or military activities that are intended to achieve a particular aim
  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • Debut - to perform or be introduced to the public for the first time
  • Incumbent - officially having the named position
  • Defend - to protect someone or something against attack or criticism
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Inadequately - not good enough or too low in quality
  • Devastated - completely destroyed
  • Turn the tide - to change a situation, especially so that you begin to win instead of losing
  • On the other hand - in a way that is different from the first thing you mentioned
  • Variable - likely to change often
  • Forecasting - the job or activity of judging what is likely to happen in the future, based on the information you have now
  • Stable - firmly fixed or not likely to move or change:
  • Prone - likely to suffer from an illness or show a particular negative characteristic
  • Volatility - likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly
  • Fielded - to have or produce a team of people to take part in an activity or event
  • Compact - consisting of parts that are positioned together closely or in a tidy way, using very little space
  • Constituency - one of the official areas of a country that elects someone to represent it in a parliament or legislature
  • Minor - having little importance, influence, or effect, especially when compared with other things of the same type
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Heavyweight - a person or thing that is important or serious and that other people notice
  • Deploy - to use something or someone, especially in an effective way
  • Mundane - very ordinary and therefore not interesting
  • Agrarian - relating to the land, especially the use of land for farming
  • Narcotic - an illegal drug such as heroin or cocaine
  • Civic - of a town or city or the people who live in it
  • Confined - to limit an activity, person, or problem in some way
  • Patronage - help or money that is given to a person or organization

Hindu Editorial Topic 2 : "Tarred by the oil spill"
  • Tarred - covered with tar (a black substance)
  • Oil spill - an accident in which oil has come out of a ship and caused pollution
  • Significant - important or noticeable
  • Coastline - the land along a coast
  • Collision - an accident that happens when two vehicles hit each other with force
  • Tragic - very sad, often involving death and suffering
  • Ironic - an ironic event or situation is interesting and sometimes humorous, because it is the opposite of what you would expect
  • Marine - related to the sea or sea transport
  • Livelihood - (the way someone earns) the money people need to pay for food, a place to live, clothing, etc
  • Declining - to gradually become less, worse, or lower
  • Navigation - to direct the way that a ship, aircraft, etc. will travel, or to find a direction across, along, or over an area of water or land, often by using a map
  • Apparent - able to be seen or understood
  • Deficient - not good enough
  • Unfold - if a situation or story unfolds, it develops or becomes clear to other people
  • Washed ashore - (of the sea) to carry something or someone to or away from a place
  • Obvious - easy to see, recognize, or understand
  • Contain - to keep something harmful within limits and not allow it to spread
  • Efficacy - the ability of achieving something, to produce the intended result
  • Disaster - (an event that results in) great harm, damage, or death, or serious difficulty
  • Contingency - something that might possibly happen in the future, usually causing problems or making further arrangements necessary
  • Stakeholders - a person such as an employee, customer, or citizen who is involved with an organization, society, etc. and therefore has responsibilities towards it and an interest in its success
  • Sludge - a thick soft substance that remains when liquid has been removed from something in an industrial process
  • Volunteer - a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it
  • Wielding - to hold a weapon or tool and look as if you are going to use it
  • Protocol - the system of rules and acceptable behaviour used at official ceremonies and occasions
  • Mitigation - a reduction in how harmful, unpleasant, or bad something is
  • Vital - very important, necessary, or essential
  • Acquisition - the process of getting something
  • Agency - a government organization
  • Muster - to produce or encourage something such as an emotion or support
  • Moreover - (used to add information) also and more importantly
  • Obfuscation - to deliberately make something confusing or difficult to understand
  • Counterproductive - having the opposite result to the one you intended
  • Impact - the force or action of one object hitting another
  • Prolonged - continuing for a long time
  • Erode - to slowly reduce or destroy something
  • Biodiversity - the number and types of plants and animals that exist in a particular area or in the world generally, or the problem of protecting this
  • Safeguard - to protect something from harm
  • Habitat - the natural environment in which an animal or plant usually lives
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Provision - a statement within an agreement or a law that a particular thing must happen or be done, especially before another can happen or be done
  • Convention - a way of behaving that is generally accepted as being normal and right
  • Conservation - the protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity
  • Migratory - having the characteristic of moving regularly to another place
  • Memorandum -  an informal legal agreement
  • Signatory - a person, organization, or country that has signed an agreement
  • Catastrophe - a sudden event that causes very great trouble or destruction
  • Ballast - a substance such as water, sand, or metal that is carried in ships or large balloons to help them remain steady
  • Dispersant - a chemical substance used to break up a liquid, especially oil floating on the sea, into tiny pieces so that it spreads over a wide area and causes less harm
  • Controversial - causing disagreement or discussion
  • Underscore - to emphasize something, or to show that it is important
  • Mandated - to give official permission for something to happen
