PM Modi pays tribute to freedom activist Veer Savarkar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to freedom activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his 51st death anniversary today. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, Veer Savarkar was a true patriot who envisioned a strong and developed India.



Himachal Pradesh: Famous International Shivratri festival begins in Mandi
In Himachal Pradesh, the famous Mandi International Shivratri festival began yesterday. AIR correspondent reports that nearly 200 deities from different parts of the state are participating in the festival this time. The one week long Mandi International Shivratri fair started with religious procession known as Jaleb yesterday.

WhatsApp Co-founder Brian Acton while meeting Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "We build every WhatsApp feature to be simple, reliable, and secure, and this vision is in line with what Digital India promises to achieve." After the meeting, Prasad tweeted, "I also appreciated the good role platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp are playing in the field of digital empowerment."

Suicide blasts pose threat to United Nations’ Syria peace talks
The United Nations' efforts to launch a new round of Syria peace talks is threatened, as the death toll due to last two days of violence in the country has crossed 100. Suicide blasts targeted two security service bases in Homs yesterday, killing a top intelligence chief and close confidant of President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in all, 42 people were killed, but the provincial governor put the figure at 30. The blasts were claimed by former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front.

Saudi Foreign Minister makes rare visit to Baghdad
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has made a rare visit to Iraq, meeting PM Haider al-Abadi. It is reportedly the first visit of a senior Saudi minister since the US overthrew Saddam Hussein in 2003. Saudi Arabia's relations with Iraq have been strained since its ambassador in Iraq accused Iran-backed Shia militias of aggravating tensions with Sunni Muslims in Iraq.

Australia and Indonesia restore full military ties
Australia and Indonesia have restored full military ties, after Indonesian military suspended cooperation in January because of insulting teaching material found at an Australian base. 
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today made the announcement alongside Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who arrived in Australia yesterday for his first visit as president. Turnbull said at a news conference in Sydney that both the leaders agreed to full restoration of defence cooperation, training exchanges and activities.

5 major telcos optimum for Indian market: Telecom Secretary
Telecom Secretary JS Deepak has said that the fresh round of consolidation unfolding in the Indian telecom market is likely to yield five major players ensuring enough competition but not fragmentation of spectrum. His comments assume significance as India -- the world's second largest mobile services market after China -- is in the midst of massive consolidation with incumbent operators joining forces to take on aggressive newcomer Reliance Jio.

India likely to be less affected by global economic shocks: IMF

Paul A Cashin, Assistant Director in the IMF's Asia & Pacific Department, and mission chief of India, said this is because India has an inward domestically demand-oriented economy. The International Monetary Fund had, earlier this week, in its annual report, forecast India's growth to slow to 6.6 per cent in the 2016-17 fiscal due to temporary disruptions caused by demonetisation.

Bitcoin price surges to three-year high of $1,219
Digital currency Bitcoin has jumped to a three-year high of $1,219.24 amid speculations that the first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund in US will receive regulatory approval. This comes after a volatile start of the year, when Bitcoin surged over 20%. The currency then plunged 35% after China warned domestic Bitcoin exchanges that they risk being closed if they violate currency regulations.

US Democrats have elected former Labour Secretary Tom Perez as their new national chairman. Mr Perez, who served in the Obama administration, won the second round of voting at the Democratic National Committee meeting in Atlanta after a tightly-fought contest. He is the first Latino in the post. Mr. Perez told his party they faced a crisis of confidence after the election of Donald Trump as US President.

68th Strandja Memorial Tournament:Hussamuddin,Maisnam enters semi-finals

Indian boxers Mohamed Hussamuddin and Meena Kumari Maisnam have entered the semi-finals in their respective categories at the 68th Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria. Both boxers are now assured of medals. In the event being held in Sofia, Hussamuddin reached the last four stage in the 56kg division. Meena Kumari entered the semi-final in the 54kg category.

India wins all 3 medals at Asian Para-Road Cycling Championship

India has made a rousing start at the sixth Asian Para-Road Cycling Championship in Bahrain.On the opening day of the tournament at Bahrain today, India bagged all three medals in the 12.8 Kilometre Individual Time Trial. Abhishek from Chandigarh won the gold medal, Divij Shah from West Bengal won silver and Harinder Singh from BSF accounted for the bronze medal. 

67 Athletes to run in IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon 2017

The IDBI Federal Life Insurance New Delhi Marathon will be held on 26th Feb 2017. The marathon will feature some of the biggest track & field and distance runners, with a total of 67 elite athletes on the starting line. The race will be flagged off by iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and will start at 5am in the morning.

Table tennis players produce 766-shot, 10-min-long rally
Netherlands' Li Jie and Japan's Hitomi Sato produced a 766-shot table tennis rally, lasting for ten minutes during an ITTF World Tour match. Because of the rally's length, the 'Expedite System' was instated. Under this rule, the server is forced to win every point of the remainder of the match in under 13 shots or they lose that particular point.
