World Radio Day - February 13th
Today is the World Radio Day that is celebrated every year on 13th of February to celebrate radio as the medium for entertainment, information and the mode for communication. This year, the theme is - Radio is You, a call for greater participation of audiences and communities in the policy and planning of radio broadcasting. In her message, Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova said, at a time of turbulence, radio provides an enduring platform to bring communities together. She said, it is a force for human rights and dignity and a powerful enabler of solutions to the challenges all societies face.
Karnataka Assembly passed Bill on Kambala:
The Karnataka government today passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017, in the Legislative Assembly to legalise the traditional buffalo-racing sport Kambala. Earlier in November, the Karnataka High Court had banned Kambala through an interim order after a petition was filed by the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

INS Sarvekshak the first Indian warship to use solar power :
Navy's survey-class vessel INS Sarvekshak has become India's first warship to install solar panels on board. The Navy said the system was 100% reliable and could be used for communication equipment, battery charging and general lightings. It was "maintenance free" whereas the diesel generator requires regular maintenance, it added. Notably, the system would save 22,995 litres of diesel annually.
To reduce smog around Delhi, smog-free towers to be installed by Haryana :
Considering the high levels of smog in NCR, the Haryana government is in talks with a Holland-based company to set up smog-free towers in Gurugram and Faridabad. Notably, the two districts contribute nearly one-fifth of the air pollution in the region. A smog-free tower is a seven-metre-high air purifier with an effective range of 300 m to 7 km.

Propaganda for single phase Uttarakhand & second phase of Uttar Pradesh ends this evening :
In Uttarakhand, campaigning will come to halt by 5 PM this evening in 69 assembly seats. No candidate or political party will thereafter indulge in any publicity activity either by holding any meeting or taking the help any other medium. According to the latest instructions, no publicity will be allowed on electronic and social media.
The political party or candidate will have to take special permission for giving advertisements in newspapers and electronic media.

Talent hunt portal for emerging sportspersons launched by Sports Ministry :
Sports Minister Vijay Goel has revealed the government is set to launch a talent hunt website for emerging sportspersons. The website will allow sportspersons to upload videos, after which the Ministry will select them on merit for training at Sports Authority of India centres. Athletes will also be given a scholarship of 5 lakh rupees per annum for eight years.

1st floating elementary school of India inaugurated in Manipur :
India's first ever floating elementary school has opened on Loktak Lake, the freshwater lake in the country, in Manipur. Situated about 50 km from Imphal, the school will not only cater to the need of the children but of the illiterate adults as well. The school will be accommodating around 25 students and two teachers from the local community.

China  unveils world's longest elevated cycleway :
The longest elevated cycleway in the world recently opened for a month-long trial period in the Chinese city of Xiamen. The cycleway, which is over eight kilometres long, can carry over 2,000 cyclists in an hour. The bike path, which reportedly took less than a year from planning to completion, covers five major residential areas and features 11 entrances.

Ekart's courier service shuts by Flipkart , hyperlocal delivery services :
Homegrown e-commerce major Flipkart has shut down its logistics arm Ekart's customer-to-customer courier as well as hyperlocal delivery services launched less than a year ago. The move is reportedly aimed at consolidating the service offerings of Ekart to sharpen its focus on its core business model. Ekart's head Saikiran Krishnamurthy had quit the company two weeks ago.

Grammy's Best World Music Album award won by Indian musician Sandeep Das :
Indian Tabla player Sandeep Das won the Best World Music Album award for 'Sing Me Home' at the Grammys 2017 as part of Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. The album also includes the New York-based Syrian clarinet player Kinan Azmeh. Ma's album features tunes composed or arranged by global artists on the ever-changing idea of home.

5 Grammys including Album Of The Year won by Singer Adele :
Singer Adele won five awards including Album Of The Year for '25' at the 59th Grammy Awards this year. Her single 'Hello' won in both the Record of The Year and the Song Of The Year categories. British Actor Dev Patel named Best Supporting Actor at BAFTA Awards 2017 :
Actor Dev Patel was named the Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film 'Lion' at this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards held today. Casey Affleck won the Leading Actor award for 'Manchester by the Sea'. Further, Viola Davis was named the Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Fences' at the awards ceremony.

Two new executives hired by Ola to lead engineering :
Ola has hired two new executives, Pranav Tiwari and Sanjay Kharb, to lead the ride-hailing app's technology team. Tiwari, a former Google employee, has joined Ola as Vice President of Engineering, and Kharb, the former VP for Production Engineering at InMobi, has joined Ola as VP of Engineering Infrastructure. In January, Ola appointed former PepsiCo executive Vishal Kaul as COO.

Parliamentary Assembly of Germany elects Frank Walter Steinmeier as its president :
Former German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been elected as President by a Parliamentary Assembly. He won 931 out of 1,260 votes. The Social Democrat, Steinmeier is one of Germany's most popular politicians.
He was chosen by the Federal Assembly meeting in Parliament in Berlin. Lawmakers and representatives from various social fields delegated by Germany's 16 states are represented in the assembly. The post is largely ceremonial, but the President represents Germany abroad and is seen as carrying moral weight.
