National productivity week celebrations to begin from today:
The National productivity week celebrations will begin from today. Every year 12th to 18th of February is celebrated as the National Productivity Week. This year the theme of week is 'From Waste to Profits-through Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.'
National Productivity Council, an autonomous body under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion was established on this day in 1958. The objective of Council is to stimulate and promote productivity and quality consciousness across all sectors in the country.
Election Commission asks HRD to introduce 'electoral literacy' in schools:
The Election Commission has asked the HRD Ministry to introduce 'electoral literacy' in secondary school syllabus to teach students how to become responsible voters. HRD has also been directed to ask the NCERT to introduce a booklet on the election process. The suggestions will be taken into account in the next revision of the curriculum, said Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.
Indian Railways conducts world's largest online test
The Indian Railways has claimed that it has conducted the world's largest online examination with nearly 92 lakh candidates, to fill more than 18,000 vacancies in various categories. Out of the 92 lakh, 2.73 lakh qualified the preliminary exam and were called for written tests between January 17-19, a senior official said. Earlier, Indian Railways' recruitment examinations were conducted manually.
Government launches iOS version of BHIM payments app:
After launching the Android version of the mobile payments app BHIM in December 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Saturday released the application on iOS devices. The app has a limit of Rs. 10,000 per transaction and Rs. 20,000 per day for transfers through a bank account. Features of the app include Pay to Aadhaar number and SPAM report.
2nd edition of International Spice Conference to begin at Thiruvanantapuram:
The second edition of the International Spice Conference is set to begin at Thiruvanantapuram today. Over 700 delegates representing various states, industry leaders from 40 countries and International Spice Associations representatives will participate in the three day conference.
The Conference would deliberate on effective strategies and innovative technologies to improve the livelihood of spice farmers, address spice industry challenges and food safety concerns among other things. The conference is hosted by the All India Spices Exporters Forum in association with Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

SBI merger delayed due to note ban: Arundhati Bhattacharya
The decision to demonetise high-denomination notes caused the delay in the merger of SBI with its associates by one quarter, Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya has said. She further said that the resolution on bad loans was also impacted due to demonetisation. In August 2016, SBI approved its merger with its five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank.

India world's fastest growing e-commerce market:
India is world's fastest growing e-commerce market expected to reach $64 billion by 2021 with a compound annual growth rate of 31.2%, according to a Forrester Research study. India will take over 10 years to reach the level of the US and China markets, the report said. China remains the largest market for e-commerce globally, it added.
Get Interim Chairman to engage with Infosys founders: Ex-CFO:
Amid the rift between Infosys founders and its board, former CFO V Balakrishnan said an Interim Chairman should be appointed at the earliest to "effectively" engage with the firm's Co-founders. "If required, re-constitute the board and move on," he said, adding, this kind of a "public spat" is a distraction for any company and affects the employee and client sentiments.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
ISRO to launch record 104 satellites in single mission on Feb 15:
Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO's workhorse PSLV - the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle - will carry a record 104 satellites in a single mission on Wednesday from Sriharikota.
ISRO said, PSLV in its 39th flight (PSLV-C37), will launch the 714 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation along with 103 co-passenger satellites, together weighing about 664 kg at lift off.
The co-passenger satellites will be of India, US, Israel, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and UAE. Last year, ISRO had launched 20 satellites. The highest number of satellites launched in a single mission is 37 by Russia in 2014.
US, Japan successfully intercept missile in space:
The US and Japanese military have successfully tested the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA missile defence system by intercepting a medium-range ballistic missile target in space for the first time. The missile was launched from a ship off the west coast of Hawaii, US. The US Missile Defence Agency said that the defence system met each of its primary objectives.
APPOINTMENTS:
Neelu Rohmetra becomes first woman Director of an IIM
The government has appointed Professor Neelu Rohmetra as the Director of Indian Institute of Management Sirmaur, making her the first female to head one of India's 20 premier business schools. The Centre also appointed directors of nine other IIMs, including IIM Bangalore. Professor G Raghuram, who has been an IIM Ahmedabad faculty member since 1985, was appointed IIM Bangalore's Director.



SPORTS NEWS:
India Won the T20 World Cup for Blind:
India successfully won its Twenty20 World Cup for Blind title by defeating Pakistan in the finals. With eight wins from nine matches, India went into the finals as the favourites and lived up to it with a comprehensive victory. For Pakistan, though, it was their first loss in the tournament. The two teams had clashed in the 2012 edition finals where India again emerged triumphant.
Man-of-the-match is acquired by the Indian player Prakash Jayaramaiah stood out with a splendid unbeaten 99-run. Man-of-the-series Badar Munir was the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 570-run effort.
Ashwin breaks Lillee record to fastest 250 wickets:
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin created the record of claiming 250 Test wickets in least number of matches in his 45th Test, eclipsing legendary Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee (He Scored 250 wickets in 48 matches).
He is the sixth Indian bowler after Anil Kumble (619), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Zaheer Khan (311), Bishan Singh Bedi (266) to reach to 250 Test wickets.

Max Stöckl sets world record for fastest MTB downhill speed
Austrian downhill rider Max Stöckl broke the world speed record for stock mountain bikes (MTBs) on gravel. Cycling downhill in the Atacama desert in Chile, Stöckl reached a record top speed of over 167 kmph. The photographer present at the slope managed to capture Stöckl's descent with a multiple exposure photograph, alongside other photographs.
Basketball fans set record for loudest indoor roar in sports
University of Kentucky's basketball fans set a Guinness record for the largest crowd roar at an indoor sports event, during their team UK Wildcats' match against Kansas University Jayhawks last week. The fans, known as the Big Blue Nation, recorded a roar measuring 126.4 decibels, beating the previous record of 126 decibels held by fans of NBA team Sacramento Kings.
Russian athlete stripped of London Olympics gold for doping
Russia's Mariya Savinova-Farnosova has been stripped of her 800-metre London 2012 Olympic gold after the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday imposed a four-year ban saying there was "clear evidence" she used performance-enhancing drugs. All of Savinova's results from July 26, 2010, to August 19, 2013, have been disqualified, stripping off her 2011 world championships gold among other medals.
