Aadhaar mandatory to avail subsidy under food security law
The government on Thursday made Aadhaar card mandatory for availing subsidised foodgrains from ration shops to better target 1.4 lakh crore subsidy under the food security law. The government has given time to those not having the biometric-based unique identification number to apply for Aadhaar by June 30. The Centre had earlier made Aadhaar mandatory for cooking gas subsidy.

Centre cites security concerns over inflight WiFi
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha on Thursday cited security concerns over inflight WiFi, saying, "we... have to make sure it does not interfere with flight operations." The Department of Telecommunications had earlier moved a proposal for data and video service connectivity onboard flights. Presently, WiFi services and calls are not allowed on flights flying over Indian airspace.

Govt decides to open 56 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras
The External Affairs Ministry and the Department of Posts announced last month their decision to utilize the Head Post Offices in the various States as POPSK. The objective of this partnership is to extend passport services on a larger scale and to ensure wider area coverage. The states include Delhi, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana and West Bengal.

Centre would pass Women’s Empowerment Bill very soon: M Venkaiah Naidu
Union Minister for Information Broadcasting and Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu assured that the Centre would pass Women’s Empowerment Bill very soon. He said that he was extremely happy to attend the historical event which was being attended by women from all walks of life from across the country which gets underway in Amaravati the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Explosion at nuclear plant in France, no radiation leak
An explosion and fire occurred at the Flamanville nuclear plant in France on Thursday and five people suffered minor injuries due to smoke inhalation, reports said. Adding that there is "no nuclear risk" to the locals, authorities said, "It is a significant technical failure but it is not a nuclear accident". Notably, nuclear power provides four-fifths of France's electricity generation.

UK Foreign secretary renounces US citizenship
UK Foreign secretary Boris Johnson has given up his US citizenship, according to US Treasury Department documents released on Wednesday. Johnson had US citizenship as well as British citizenship as he was born and lived in New York until the age of five. Notably, Johnson was being pursued by US authorities over tax payments on the sale of his house.

China starts fingerprinting all foreign visitors
China has started taking fingerprints of all foreign visitors, aged between 14 to 70, at the Shenzhen International Airport from Friday to improve border checks, according to China's Ministry of Public Security. Foreigners with diplomatic passports will not have to provide their fingerprints and Chinese citizens from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will not be considered foreigners, it added.

Eiffel Tower to get bulletproof walls amid terrorism fears
The Eiffel Tower will be protected by 2.5-metre-high bulletproof glass walls at its northern and southern ends to protect it from terror attacks, Paris Deputy Mayor Jean-Francois Martins announced on Thursday. The walls, to be built later this year at the cost of €20 million (nearly 142.6 crore), will prevent visitors from accessing the tower without undergoing security checks.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6.25 per cent
The Reserve Bank of India today maintained status quo on its key rates in its monetary policy review, today and the repo rate, or the rate at which the RBI lends to banks, stands unchanged at 6(point)25 per cent, and the reverse repo rate, or the rate at which the RBI absorbs excess liquidity, also remains steady at 5(point)75 per cent.

Sebi to form new Fintech committee

Uber launches UberHIRE in 9 cities
After Ola, US-based cab aggregator Uber has now launched ‘UberHIRE’ in nine Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Pune that will allow users to hire a cab for up to 12 hours.     UberHIRE is a time-based offering that allows users to make trips punctuated with multiple stop overs, Uber said in a blogpost.

Tata Steel signs agreement with Liberty House
Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements with U.K. based Liberty House for sale of its speciality steel business for total consideration of 100 million pounds that covers several South Yorkshire-based assets and service centres in U.K. and China.        The speciality steel business employs 1700 people making steel for the aerospace, automotive and oil & gas industries.

Flipkart re-hires two executives to launch grocery business
Homegrown e-commerce major Flipkart's newly-appointed CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has re-hired two former executives, Manish Kumar and Nitin Rajput, to launch a grocery category. After leaving Flipkart separately, Kumar and Rajput had teamed up last year to launch a hyperlocal startup but they have shut their venture. Flipkart is reportedly planning to launch its brand of pulses and other groceries.

Indian-origin neurosurgeon shortlisted for NASA 2018 space mission
An Indian-origin neurosurgeon currently based in Canada has been shortlisted by NASA for its 2018 space mission under the Citizen Science Astronaut (CSA) programme. If everything goes as per plan, 32-year old Dr Shawna Pandya may join the league of Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams.

New Delhi: Sports Minister Vijay Goel today launches Mission-Eleven-Million programme
Sports Minister Vijay Goel today launched Mission-Eleven-Million, the biggest school sports outreach programme in the country at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The programme aims to instill the passion for football in 11 million children from every part of the country. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Goel said, the key idea of this programme is that every child should have the opportunity to play football. He said, over the past year, his Ministry has made many bold strides towards developing a sporting culture in the country.

MRI pioneer and Nobel laureate Sir Peter Mansfield passes away at 83
Nobel laureate Sir Peter Mansfield, who developed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), has died at the age of 83 on Wednesday. Mansfield, an English physicist born in 1933, was a Professor at the University of Nottingham starting from 1964 until 1994, when he retired. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2003, along with late American chemist Paul Lauterbur, for discovering Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
