Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A mid-term referendum"
  • Mid-term - in the middle of the period when a government is in office
  • Referendum - a vote in which all the people in a country or an area are asked to give their opinion about or decide an important political or social question
  • Barely - used for saying that something almost does not happen or exist, or is almost not possible
  • Beyond - outside a particular area
  • Halfway - in the middle of a period of time
  • Overstate - to talk about something in a way that makes it seem more important, impressive, or serious than it really is
  • Federalisation - the state of being under central government's control
  • Regionalisation - the way that an area of the world containing several countries becomes more economically or politically important than the particular countries within that area
  • Bagger - winner
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Agenda - all the things that need to be done
  • Sidelight - a less important issue connected with the main subject of something such as a report or a discussion
  • Unveiled - to announce something officially that was previously a secret
  • Tripartite - involving three people or organizations
  • Bracing - preparing
  • Revolt - to refuse to accept something such as a law or a decision
  • Chunk -  a part of something, especially a large part
  • Forge - to make or produce something, especially with some difficulty
  • Alliance -  an agreement to work with someone else to try to achieve the same thing
  • Strategy - a detailed plan for achieving success in situations such as war, politics, business, industry, or sport
  • Polarisation - to form two very different groups, opinions, or situations that are completely opposite to each other
  • In the wake of something - if something happens in the wake of something else, it happens after and often because of it
  • Throw down the gauntlet - to make it clear that you want to argue or fight with someone about something
  • Clinching - to finally get or win something
  • Staked - to risk losing or damaging something valuable in order to obtain or achieve something
  • Precipitated - to make something happen or begin to exist suddenly and quickly, especially something bad
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Volatile - a volatile situation can suddenly change or become more dangerous
  • Ignited - to cause a dangerous, excited, or angry situation to begin
  • Fray - to separate
  • Reverberations - effects that spread and affect a lot of people

  • Factual - using or consisting of facts
  • Post-truth - relating to a situation or system in which facts are neglected in favour of emotions and beliefs
  • Threatened - warned
  • Retaliatory - a retaliatory action is one that is harmful to someone who has done something to harm you
  • Pizzeria - a restaurant that sells pizza
  • Trafficking - the business of buying and selling things such as drugs or weapons illegally
  • Deliberate - intentional or planned
  • Imperative - extremely important or urgent
  • Perpetually - continuing for ever in the same way
  • Proliferation - to increase a lot and suddenly in number
  • Clickbait - articles, photographs, etc. on the internet that are intended to attract attention and encourage people to click on links to particular websites
  • Impact - a powerful effect that something has on a situation or person
  • Far-reaching - affecting a lot of people or things in an important way
  • Abundance - a very large quantity of something
  • Concern -  a feeling of worry about something
  • Combat - to try to stop something unpleasant or harmful from happening or increasing
  • Muzzle - to stop a person or organization from expressing independent opinions
  • Vital - necessary
  • Regulate - to control something
  • Rigorous - controlling behaviour in a serious way
  • Adherence - the fact of someone behaving exactly according to rules, beliefs, etc
  • Charter - an official statement that makes rules for something
  • Falling short - to fail to reach an amount or standard that was expected or hoped for
  • Meanwhile - at the same time
  • Contours - limits
  • Deliberately - intentionally
  • Misrepresent - to describe falsely an idea, opinion, or situation, often in order to get an advantage
  • Inhabit - to live in a place
