  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • War cry - a phrase or word shouted by people as they start to fight, intended to give them the strength and wish to fight harder
  • Trek - to walk a long distance
  • Maximalist - a person who holds extreme views and is not prepared to compromise (especially in politics)
  • Incumbency - an official position
  • Verdict - an official judgment
  • Nerve-wracking - something that is difficult to do and causes a lot of worry for the person involved in it
  • Perceive - to understand or think about something in a particular way
  • Coterie - a small group of people with shared interests, often one that does not want other people to join them
  • Rebrand - to change the way that an organization, company, or product is seen by the public
  • Mock - to laugh at someone, often by copying them in a funny but unkind way
  • Witless - stupid or showing no intelligence
  • Administration - the activities involved in managing a business, organization, or institution
  • Cracked - damaged
  • Strategically - a detailed plan for achieving success in situations such as war, politics, business, industry, or sport
  • Showcase - to show the best qualities or parts of something
  • Spoils - the benefits that someone gets when they win something
  • Ideal - a perfect thing or situation
  • Minorities - any small group in society that is different from the rest because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Ballot - secret voting
  • Tactically - in a way that relates to actions carefully planned to gain a specific end
  • Nadir - the worst moment, or the moment of least hope and least achievement
  • Transformational - able to produce a big change or improvement in a situation
  • Leap - to move somewhere suddenly and quickly
  • In a vacuum - existing separately, or considered separately, from other people, events, or ideas, and not influenced by them
  • Formidable - causing you to have fear or respect for something or someone because that thing or person is large, powerful, or difficult
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Globalisation - the increase of trade around the world, especially by large companies producing and trading goods in many different countries
  • Spokesman - someone who is chosen by a group or organization to speak officially to the public for them
  • Forum - a situation or meeting in which people can talk about a problem or matter especially of public interest
  • Timely - happening at the best possible moment
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something, or that something may or may not be true
  • Visionary - with clear ideas or hopes of how something should be done or how things will be in the future
  • Uncertainty - a situation in which something is not known, or something that is not known or certain
  • Chancellor - a person in a position of the highest or high rank, especially in a government or university
  • Potential - someone's or something's ability to develop, achieve, or succeed
  • Juncture - a particular point in time
  • Take up the cudgels on behalf of something - to argue strongly in support of something
  • Rising tide of something - an increase in the amount or strength of something, especially something that you must oppose
  • Plenary - a plenary meeting is one at which all the members of a group or organization are present, especially at a conference
  • Robust - strong
  • Reassuring - making you feel less worried
  • Perceive - to come to an opinion about something, or have a belief about something
  • Fragile - easily damaged, broken, or harmed
  • Running counter to something - to be in opposition to something
  • Interpret - to understand an action, situation etc in a particular way
  • Rebuke - to speak angrily to someone because you disapprove of what they have said or done
  • Protectionism - the actions of a government to help its country's trade or industry by taxing goods bought from other countries
  • Slump - to fall suddenly
  • Underpin - to give support, strength, or a basic structure to something
  • Reiterate - to say something again, once or several times
  • Reform - to make an improvement, especially by changing a person's behaviour or the structure of something
  • Emerging - starting to exist
  • In contrast - used when you are comparing two things or people and saying that the second one is very different from the first
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Craft - to make or produce something skilfully
  • Fundamentally - in a very important or basic way
  • Tragic - very sad, often involving death and suffering
  • Migration - movement from one region to another and often back again, esp. according to the season of the year
  • Conflict - an active disagreement between people with opposing opinions or principles
  • Diagnosis - a judgment about what a particular illness or problem is, made after examining it
  • Reap - to get something as a result of something that you do
  • Mobility - the ability to move freely
  • Immigration - the act of someone coming to live in a different country
  • Fallout -the unpleasant effects of something that has happened
  • Demonstrable - able to be proved
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed in the past
  • Prosperity - the situation of being successful and having a lot of money
  • Redistribution - to change the way that something is shared between people, especially land or money
  • Accuse - to say that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind
  • Commensurate - in a correct and suitable amount compared to something else
  • Step up to the podium - to take action when something needs to be done, even though this is difficult
