  • Oil the wheels - to make it easier for something to happen
  • Threat - a suggestion that something unpleasant or violent will happen, especially if a particular action or order is not followed

  • Intervention - a situation in which someone becomes involved in a particular issue, problem etc in order to influence what happens
  • Protest - a strong complaint expressing disagreement, disapproval, or opposition
  • Put something off - to decide or arrange to delay an event or activity until a later time or date
  • Raise a red flag - to oppose something
  • Levy - an amount of money that you have to pay, for example as a tax
  • Merchant - a person whose job is to buy and sell products in large amounts
  • Demonetisation -  to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Waived - to choose to officially ignore a rule, right, or claim
  • Surcharge - a charge in addition to the usual amount paid for something, or the amount already paid
  • Consumer - a person who buys goods or services for their own use
  • Stakeholders - a person or group of people who own a share in a business
  • Out of line - behaving in a way that other people do not approve of
  • Tank up - to fill a vehicle with petrol
  • Spat - a short argument
  • Subvention - an amount of money given as support by an organization or government for a particular purpose
  • Outlet - a pipe or hole through which gas or liquid flows out
  • Ease - to become less serious, difficult, unpleasant, painful, etc
  • Cash-strapped - not having enough money
  • Nudging - pushing someone gently
  • Uncertainty - the situation in which you are not able to decide about something
  • Crisis - an extremely difficult or dangerous point in a situation
  • Legislative - relating to laws
  • Constituted - combined
  • Mooted - to suggest something as a subject for discussion
  • Transparency - an honest way of doing things that allows other people to know exactly what you are doing
  • Liable - having (legal) responsibility for something or someone
  • Consistency - the quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way, or of always happening in a similar way
  • Suffice - to be enough

  • Reformists - people wanting to change and improve society or an institution
  • Cleric - a religious leader
  • Moderate - a person whose opinions, especially their political ones, are not extreme and are therefore acceptable to a large number of people
  • Tenure - the period of time during which someone has an important job or is an elected official
  • Emerging - just beginning to exist or be noticed
  • Revolutionary - someone who tries to cause or take part in a revolution
  • Overthrow - to defeat or remove someone from power, using force
  • Regime - a particular government
  • Devastated - completely destroyed
  • Liberal -  respecting and allowing many different types of beliefs or behaviour
  • Statism - the principle that the government should own or control most of a country's industry and economy
  • Ruthless - not thinking or worrying about any pain caused to others; cruel
  • Preside over - to be in a position of power while important changes or events are happening
  • Suppression - to stop opposition or protest using military force or strict laws
  • Dissent - strong disagreement
  • Prominent - very well known and important
  • Reformist - wanting to change and improve society or an institution
  • Hardliner - the fact of being very severe, for example in refusing to allow something or to give people what they want:
  • Supremacy - the leading or controlling position
  • Theocracy - government by religious leaders
  • Conservative  - not usually liking or trusting change, especially sudden change
  • Milieu - the particular people and society that surround you and influence the way in which you behave
  • Allegations - a statement, made without giving proof, that someone has done something wrong or illegal
  • Loggerheads - to strongly disagree (with someone)
  • Thwarted - to stop something from happening or someone from doing something
  • Prominence - the state of being important or well known
  • Centrist - supporting the centre of the range of political opinions
  • Pivotal - extremely important and affecting how something develops
  • Landmark - a major event or achievement that marks an important stage in a process and makes progress possible
  • Inclination - a feeling that you want to do a particular thing
  • Weaponising - to turn bacteria, poisonous chemicals, etc. into weapons that could kill or injure many people
  • Volatile - likely to change suddenly and unexpectedly or suddenly become violent or angry
  • Reformist - someone who tries to improve a system or law by changing it
  • Stiff - severe and difficult
  • Theocrat - a person who rules, governs as a representative of God
  • Ripe age - an age at which someone is very old
  • Straddle - to be on both sides of something
