All India Conference of Waqf Boards begins today
i) The All India Conference of Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of States and Union Territories' Waqf Boards begins in New Delhi today.
ii) The conference will be inaugurated by Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
iii) Various issues, including review of progress under the schemes relating to grant of financial assistance for computerization of waqf properties, strengthening of waqf boards and development of waqf properties by National Waqf Development Corporation Ltd. will be discussed during the conference.
4th Assam International Agri-Horti show begins
i) Fourth Assam International Agri-Horti show has begun in Guwahati, Assam on 6 January.
ii) State Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the show.Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora informed that 10 foreign countries are also taking part in the show.
New Delhi World Book Fair begins today
i) The 9-day New Delhi World Book Fair began at Pragati Maidan in national capital. The theme for this year's event is 'Manushi' which focuses on writings on and by women.
ii) The fair will exhibit the rich tradition of women writings from ancient times till the present. Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Mahendra Nath Pandey inaugurated the fair.
iii) Nearly 800 publishers from across the country and abroad are participating in it. About 20 countries including China, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan and Iran are taking part in the Foreign Pavilion.
Road Transport & Highways Ministry is planning to soon launch 2 mobille apps
i) The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is planning to soon launch two mobile apps, m-Parivahan and e-challan, which would not only give a push to road safety but also facilitate citizen interactions.
ii) Both the apps are expected to be launched during the Road Safety Week which begins on Monday.
Suriname Vice President Ashwin Adhin arrives in New Delhi on 9-day visit
i) Vice President of Suriname, Ashwin Adhin, arrived in New Delhi on Friday on a nine-day visit.
ii) During his visit Adhin will attend the inaugural session of the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) in Bengaluru today and will also attend various events on Sunday and Monday.
iii) He will also meet a number of union ministers during his stay in India.
14th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas convention begins in Bengaluru today
i) Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has been held traditionally on 9th January every year to commemorate the return of Mahatma Gandhi as a Pravasi from South Africa to India.The 3-day 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD 2017) convention began in Bengaluru today.
ii) On the first day, the Youth Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was inaugurated by Vice President of Suriname Micheal Ashwin Adhin, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel, Minister of State for External Affairs Gen V K Singh and Karnataka Ministers R V Deshpande and Priyank Kharge.
iii) The main convention will be inaugurated tomorrow by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Guest of the event, Prime Minister of Portugal Dr Antonio Costa. President Pranab Mukherjee will confer Pravasi Bhartiya Samman on Monday.
Union Minister Haribhai Choudhary inaugurates Khadi India Lounge in Mumbai
i) Minister of State for MSME, Haribhai Choudhary today inaugurated the first and exclusive Khadi India Lounge in Mumbai today. He expressed hope that such initiative will create multiple employment opportunities and will empower the artisans, especially women in rural India by selling their premium products.
ii) The lounge will showcase designer line of garments and exclusive fabric for men and women in major metropolitan cities. These include high fashion garments including ready to wear designed by RituBeri, the acclaimed fashion designer.
iii) Quoting sources, our correspondent reports that similar stores have been set up in Delhi and Jaipur, which will be inaugurated later this month.
Delhi govt approves fourth phase of Delhi Metro
i) The Delhi government has approved the fourth phase of the Metro project, featuring six corridors measuring over a hundred kilometres.
ii) A decision to this effect was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
iii) It will take the network to the outer areas of the national capital and make the airport more accessible.
INTERNATIONAL:
Norway to become first country to switch off FM radio
i) Norway is set to become the first country in the world to switch off its FM radio network. In this regard, Scandinavian country’s parliament has approved a proposal to shift to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).
ii) The shutdown of FM (frequency modulation) radio will begin on January 11, 2017 from the northern city of Bodoe. Norwegian government claims that Radio digitization will help to save money and allow national radio stations to invest more in radio content. Iii) It will also open the door to a far greater range of radio channels, benefiting listeners across the country.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY NEWS:
Vodafone to offer unlimited 3G, 4G data for 1 hour at Rs.16
i) Telecom operator Vodafone today announced a Super Hour scheme under which it will offer unlimited 3G or 4G data for one hour at a starting price of Rs,16 for pre-paid customers.
ii) It will also offer unlimited local voice calls (within network) with one hour validity for Rs,7.
iii) Under the scheme, prepaid customers will get unlimited 4G/3G data usage for one hour, starting at just Rs,16 which will be launched from January 7 and available to customers across all circles by January 9.
Cabinet approves 26% strategic sale in BEML
i) The Centre will sell 26 per cent stake in defence equipment manufacturer BEML, making it the first major PSU to be sold through strategic disinvestment, which may fetch the exchequer over ₹1,000 crore.
ii) In a notification to the stock exchanges, BEML said that the Cabinet has given an ‘in-principal’ approval for strategic disinvestment of 26 per cent equity shares in BEML Ltd. out of government’s shareholding of 54.03 per cent.
iii) At the current market pricing of ₹999.50 a share, 26 per cent stake of BEML could fetch the exchequer over ₹1,000 crore. After the strategic sale, government stake in the PSU would come down to 28.03 per cent.
RBI to provide rupees 1 billion in Rs 100 notes to Nepal Rashtra Bank
i) The Rserve Bank of India, RBI, has agreed to provide rupees one billion in Rs 100 denomination notes to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) to ease the acute shortage of 100 Rs notes faced by the Himalayan nation.
ii) The NRB's plan to import INR 100 denomination notes was delayed due to the Indian government's move to demonetise INR 500 and INR 1,000 notes on November 8.
iii) According to Himalayan Times, RBI recently wrote to NRB that it will be able to provide INR one billion in INR 100 denomination notes. As RBI has agreed to provide INR one billion, NRB officials have said that the central bank is preparing to bring the amount within January.
India's GDP growth estimated at 7.1% this year; per capita net national income rises by over 10%
i) The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is estimated at 7(point)1 per cent in 2016-17 as compared to 7(point)6 per cent in 2015-16. Releasing the data, Chief Statistician T C A Anant said in New Delhi this evening that the per capita net national income during 2016-17 is estimated to be One lakh three thousand seven rupees showing a rise of 10.4 per cent as compared to 93 thousand two hundred ninety three during 2015-16 with the growth rate of 7.4 percent.
EPFO makes Aadhar mandatory for its pensioners & members
i) Employees' Provide Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made Aadhaar mandatory for its about 50 lakh pensioners and around four crore subscribers.
ii) Central Provident Fund Commissioner VP Joy said in New Delhi that the pensioners as well as members would have to provide Aadhaar or a proof that they have applied for it by 31st of this month to remain the beneficiary of social security schemes of EPFO.
iii) The central government contributes 1.16 per cent of the basic wages as subsidy to every members Employees Pension Scheme Account in addition to 8.33 per cent deposited by their employers every month.

Sir Tim Barrow appointed as Britain's EU ambassador
i) UK's government has appointed career diplomat Sir Tim Barrow as its ambassador to the EU.
ii) The office of Britain's PM Theresa May said that Barrow is a seasoned and tough negotiator who will bring energy to Brexit talks.
iii) The former ambassador Sir Ivan Rogers had resigned after accusing the government of "ill-founded arguments and muddled thinking" over the Brexit negotiation.
Michelle Obama selects Indo-American for education campaign
i) US First Lady Michelle Obama has selected a 16-year-old Indian-American to serve in the inaugural Student Advisory Board of the 'Better Make Room' education campaign.
ii) Swetha Prabakaran, the only Indian-American on the list, has been chosen in recognition of her efforts to educate the youth in computer sciences.
iii) She has previously been honoured as a White House Champion of Change.

30 Indian-origin men, women in Forbes list of super achievers
i) Over 30 Indian-origin innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders have been featured in the 2017 edition of Forbes' list of super achievers under the age of 30 who seek to break the status quo and transform the world.
ii) The Forbes list has 30 game changers in 20 industries including healthcare, manufacturing, sports and finance.
iii) The 600 in the list are "challenging the conventional wisdom and rewriting the rules for the next generation of entrepreneurs, entertainers, educators and more. China launches longest bullet train
i) China launched its longest bullet train “Shangri-la of the World” from Kunming, capital of south-west China’s Yunnan Province to Beijing, expanding its high speed train network to about 20,000 km connecting almost all provinces.
ii) The 2252 km Shanghai-Kunming line links China’s prosperous eastern coast with the less-developed south-western part. It traverses through 5 provinces of China viz. Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan.
SPORTS NEWS:
Virat Kohli named captain of Indian ODI, T20I teams
i) The national selection committee of the BCCI has named Virat Kohli as captain of India’s One Day International (ODI), T20I teams.
ii) Notably, Kohli is also captain of India’s test team and with this appointment will lead Indian cricket team in all three formats. His appointment comes after Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down after more than nine years at the helm.
iii) The selection committee also announced the squad for the home series against England beginning January 15, 2017. MS Dhoni has been included as wicket keeper-batsman in the squad.
iv) It also features Yuvraj Singh. Suresh Raina has been excluded from ODIs but has been named in the T20I squad.
OBITUARY:
Sitar Maestro Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan passes away
i) Renowned sitar player Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, - the last survivor of the 'Sitar Trinity' of India along with the late Pandit Ravi Shankar and UstadVilayat Khan - died in Mumbai. He was 88.
ii) Conferred with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and SangeetNatakAkademi awards, Mr Khan hailed from the Indore Gharana and is credited for innovating the unique music style of 'JafferkhaniBaaj'.
iii) He, during his music career spanning over six decades, played the sitar for various Bollywood films, including "Mughal-E-Azam", "Kohinoor", "Goonj Uthi Shehnai" and "Jhanak Jhanak PayalBaaje", among many others.
