NTR ArogyaRaksha Scheme Launches in Andhra Pradesh
i) Chandrababu Naidu the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh launches NTR arogyaRaksha Scheme yesterday. NTR ArogyaRaksha Scheme is to provide the medical treatment to the people of the Above Poverty Line at Rs. 1200 premium per annum.
ii) The premium of NTR ArogyaRaksha Scheme is 1200 annual per head. This NTR Health Scheme will cover the 1044 diseases and appeals people to enroll their names in the scheme by paying Rs. 1200 per annum per head.
iii) The Chief Minister reiterated that he aimed to make Andhra Pradesh on top three developed state in the country by 2022 and top developed state by 2029.
PM inaugurates Indian Science Congress in Tirupati
i) Prime Minister NarendraModi inaugurated the 104th Indian Science Congress at Tarakarama Stadium of Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh today.
ii) The theme for the five-day event is 'Science and Technology for National Development'. The Prime Minister also felicitated Nobel laureates at the conclave.
iii) Prime Minister NarendraModi said that the government is committed to supporting different streams of scientific research in the country. He was addressing the Indian Science Congress at Tirupati.
iv) PM Modi also said that one important area that needs to be addressed is the rapid global rise of Cyber-Physical Systems.
Maharashtra: Digi-DhanMela begins today in Mumbai
i) The Digi-DhanMela began today in Mumbai. The state government has organised a day-long Digi-DhanMela today at Fort Campus of Mumbai University where it will provide assistance and train people to use online platforms to conduct transactions. State Additional Secretary, D.K. Jain, inaugurated the day long mela.
ii) AIR Correspondent reports that DigiDhanMela being held in Mumbai aims to generate awareness among citizens and merchants about various digital payment systems available.
iii) It also aims to handhold users in downloading, installing and using various digital payment systems for carrying out digital transactions.The initiative plans to enable citizens and merchants to undertake real time digital transactions through the DigiDhanMela.
PravasiBhartiyaDiwas Convention to open on 7th of Jan in Bengaluru
i) The 14th PravasiBhartiyaDiwas Convention will open on 7th of this month in Bengaluru. Briefing media in New Delhi, Secretary Overseas Indian Affairs DhyaneshwarMulay said Prime Minister NarendraModi will inaugurate the event on 8th of this month.
ii) He said four thousand delegates are expected to attend the event at Bengaluru International Exhibition Center. MrMulay said President Pranab Mukherjee will participate in the event on 9th of January where he will confer PravasiBharatiyaSamman.
Minority Affairs Ministry celebrates SwachchhataPakhwada
i) The Minority Affairs Ministry celebrated SwachchhataPakhwada beginning from 16th of last month. In coordination with New Delhi Municipal Corporation and Municipal Corporation's of Delhi, five teams led by a Joint Secretary or Dy Director General level officer undertook activities for cleanliness drive.
ii) The different organization of the Ministry such as Central Waqf Board, National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation, NAWADCO, NCM, CLM also observed the Pakhwada in their respective offices and branches. Officials from the Ministry also visited the Delhi based organizations to interact with their officials on the occasion.
Mobile app for Indian Merchant Navy officers launched
i) The Maritime Union of India (MUI), country’s oldest union representing Indian Merchant Navy Officers since 1939, has launched android based mobile app named MUI.
ii) The app was launched in the presence of MPs KiritSomaiya (Mumbai North-East constituency) and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (Jodhpur) recently, said a senior member of the Union.
iii) The app is aimed at connecting the maritime fraternity across the country to facilitate and enable Indian merchant navy officers to share comments, knowledge and other things related to their profession.
GST Council meeting underway in New Delhi
i) The GST Council meeting headed by the Finance Minister ArunJaitley is underway in New Delhi. The key issues related to Integrated GST and dual control will be discussed during the day long meeting.
ii) Representatives of six crucial sectors, including IT, telecom, banking and insurance, to assess the implementation hurdles under the new GST regime are attending the meeting.
iii) In the last meeting, the council had approved the primary drafts of Central GST and State GST laws. The council had also cleared the basic draft of compensation law.
INTERNATIONAL:
India, Sri Lanka agree to set SOPs to solve fishermen issues
i) India and Sri Lanka agreed to a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to expedite the release and handing over fishermen in each other’s custody on completion of respective legal and procedural formalities.
ii) The SOPS was agreed at the ministerial level talks held on fishermen issues yesterday in Colombo. Indian Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh met with Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister MahindaAmaraweera.
iii) The talks followed the first meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on fisheries in New Delhi on December 31, 2016. The JWG, constituted in pursuance of the decision taken at the ministerial meeting in New Delhi on November 5, 2016, was co-chaired by Secretary (Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries), India and Secretary (Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development), Sri Lanka.
Pakistan’s landmark Hindu marriage bill inches closer to enactment
i) The much-awaited bill to regulate marriages of minority Hindus in Pakistan on Monday moved closer to reality after a Senate committee approved the landmark draft legislation, nearly four months after it was passed by the National Assembly.
ii) The Hindu Marriage Bill 2016 will become a law after it will be passed by the Senate, the upper house of the Parliament.
iii) The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights unanimously approved the much-awaited Hindu Marriages Bill, paving the way to its presentation in the Senate.
iv) The Senate committee under the chair of MuttahidaQaumi Movement Senator NasreenJalil took up the bill for discussion and later approved it.
India 3rd among nations offering highest salaries to expats
i) India has ranked third among the countries offering the highest average annual salary to expatriates, according to HSBC Holdings data.
ii) Notably, Switzerland offers an average salary of $188,275 a year to expats, the highest in the world and almost twice the global average.
iii) Further, the best employment packages, including health benefits, are found in Middle East countries like Bahrain.
Google doodle remembers SavitribaiPhule on her 186th birth anniversary
i) Commemorating the 186th birth anniversary of social reformer and poet SavitribaiPhule, Google has dedicated a special doodle on the day.  
ii) At a time when women were subjected to oppression and their grievances rarely identified, Savitribai, along with her husband JyotiraoPhule, stood up for the rights of women and fought against the injustice faced by them.
BANKING NEWS:
RBI asks banks to supply 40% currency to rural areas
i) RBI has asked banks to supply at least 40 per cent of currency to rural areas, after observing that bank notes, being supplied to rural areas, at present, are not in proportion with the requirements of rural population.
ii) In a notification today, the apex bank advised banks to increase supply of fresh notes and asked currency chests to issue lower denomination notes in villages and rural centers. The RBI also advised banks to adopt a need based approach.

Bank of Baroda ties up with CNX Corporation
i) Public sector lender Bank of BarodaBSE 0.60 % has entered into a partnership with CNX Corporation (CNX) with an objective to provide collateral management services towards the loans against warehouse receipt sanctioned to the farmers through the network of the bank's branches across the country.
ii) CNX is engaged in providing warehouse management services relating to commodities and inventories which include collateral management services, field warehousing arrangements, inventory audit services, storage and preservation services, procurement services, testing and certification services, inspection services, monitoring services.
APPOINTMENTS:
David R Syiemlieh appointed new UPSC chairman
i) David R Syiemlieh has been appointed today as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
ii) An official statement said President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Prof David R Syiemlieh, Member, Union Public Service Commission, with effect from January 4, 2017 till further Order.
iii) He will take over from AlkaSirohi, a former IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre.

i) Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has been awarded as “Best Performing Power Distribution Utility in Power Sector” by Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP).
ii) The award was presented to Karan Deep Chaudhri, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, PSPSCL by Union Minister Sanjeev Kumar Balyan Minister in Ministry of Water Resources River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, in New Delhi.

Table tennis Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia announces retirement
i) China's table tennis Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia has announced her retirement through social media.
ii) Li helped China win the team gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games last year when she also finished the runner-up in the singles event.
iii) She is the eighth table tennis Grand Slam winner in history with singles crowns from the 2008 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, 2012 Olympics in London and 2013 world championships in Paris.
iv) She also has several doubles and teams world titles to her name.
OBITUARY:  
K V Pusa, former NPCC President and Minister, passes away
i) Former President of Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) K V Pusa passed away on 2 January 2016 following a brief illness. He was 63. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
ii) Other than serving the political career, Pusa was also associated with social activities such as leading various students, farmers and sports organizations.
Karnataka minister HS Mahadeva Prasad dies
i) Karnataka Cooperation and Sugar Minister H S Mahadev Prasad died of a massive heart attack at a private resort in Koppa in Chikkamagaluru district on Tuesday. The 58-year-old minister is survived by his wife and a son.

ii) Prasad was a minister in the JD(S)-BJP coalition government headed by H D Kumaraswamy during 2005-07 and quit JDS and joined the Congress. Prasad's son Ganesh said that the body will be taken to Gundlupete by evening and last rites will be performed on Wednesday.
