National Voters' Day : 25th January
25th January is celebrated as National Voters' Day throughout India every year. The date was declared as the National Voters' Day in the year 2011 as the Election Commission of India was founded on 25 January 1950. The day aims at increasing the enrolment of voters, especially encourage participation of newly eligible young voters and ensure universal adult franchise

Jallikattu Bill passed by TN Govt is opposed by Animal Welfare Board  in SC :
The Animal Welfare Board of India has moved the Supreme Court challenging Tamil Nadu's new Act allowing the traditional bull-taming sport Jallikattu. The plea challenges the Bill on grounds of cruelty to animals and violation of animal rights. The court has listed the matter for January 30 along with the Centre's plea for withdrawing the 2016 notification on Jallikattu.

Cash transaction over Rs.50k should be taxed recommends by Govt panel :
The Chief Ministers' panel on digital payments on Tuesday recommended levying a banking cash transaction tax on transactions of Rs.50,000 and above. The panel also recommended the abolition of merchant discount rate to make digital payments cheaper than cash. The panel's other recommendations include tax incentives for micro ATMs, biometric sensors and tax refund for consumers using digital payment
Jal Devi a 95-year-old candidate to contest UP assembly polls :
Jal Devi, who is 95 years old, has filed her nomination papers for the upcoming UP Assembly election and has vowed to root out corruption. "My agenda remains to weed out corruption and ensure smooth functioning in the constituency," she said. She will be contesting as an independent candidate from Agra’s Kheragarh, a seat currently held by a BSP candidate.

Shorter  version of National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' Approx 20 secs :
While the formal rendition of 'Jana Gana Mana', which is written in Bengali Sanskrit, takes 52 seconds, a shorter version takes approximately 20 seconds. The shorter version includes the first and last lines of the National Anthem and is played on certain occasions. Composed by Rabindranath Tagore, 'Jana Gana Mana' was officially declared India's National Anthem on January 24, 1950.
New mobile app to map locations of patrolling teams  launched by Pune cops
The Pune Police has started using a mobile application to map the real-time locations of patrolling teams from police stations on an experimental basis. The app, called Beat Marshall Monitoring Mobile App, will be installed on cell phones of patrolling cops. The app would make the dispatch of patrolling parties easier in times of emergency.

2nd testing of Guided Pinaka missile ends Sucessfully :
The second successful test of the Guided Pinaka rocket was conducted on Tuesday from the Integrated Test Range at the APJ Abdul Kalam island off the Odisha coast. The range of this rocket was increased from 40 km to 70 km and it also has an improved accuracy of 500 m. Pinaka's first test flight was conducted on January 12
Govt to carefully examine CM panels BCTT recommendations :
Government says it has not yet taken any final view on the recommendations of the Committee of Chief Ministers on Digital Payments. Finance Ministry issued a statement to this effect today.
The media has reported various aspects of the recommendations made by the Committee, including the recommendation relating to levy of Banking Cash Transaction Tax on transactions of 50,000 rupees and above.

American technology major Microsoft has reinstated the role of Chief Technology Officer for the first time in 17 years and appointed LinkedIn's Senior Vice President of Infrastructure, Kevin Scott, to the position. Scott will remain a part of LinkedIn’s team in his new role, while reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella. Prior to LinkedIn, Scott had worked at Google

Obama has offered a CEO job in card game company
Party game maker Cards Against Humanity has offered former US President Barack Obama a job as its CEO in a job posting. The listing calls for "experience hunting terrorist masterminds" and ideally, a Nobel Peace Prize. Music streaming startup Spotify had also offered Obama a job as its 'President of Playlists' after he created a popular music playlist.
Insurance coverage offered for worker from Nepal to India by Nepal Govt :
Nepal government has announced a plan to provide insurance cover to Nepalese workers going to India and double the insurance cover for those going to other work destinations.
Unveiling the scheme in Kathmandu yesterday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the plan is aimed at providing better social security to migrant workers, more importantly to the families of those killed and injured in their work destinations. The decision will benefit around 5 million Nepalese working in more than 110 work destinations recognised by the government.

HDFC Bank's profit growth falls to lowest-ever at 15% on note ban
Private sector lender HDFC Bank on Tuesday reported its lowest-ever quarterly profit growth of 15% at Rs.3,865 crore for the December quarter. The slow growth was attributed to the government's decision to demonetise high-value currency. Notably, the lender had consistently delivered 30% profit growth for more than 32 quarters without a break till about two years ago.

On effect of  increased online banking 117 branches of HSBC to be closed
Banking major HSBC has said it plans to close 117 branches and 380 roles in UK this year due to customers increasingly conducting banking through Internet and mobile phones. HSBC said the number of customers using branches has fallen by 40% over last five years. Notably, 200 of the cut jobs will be transferred to India and China, among others.

Deadline on less surcharge at petrol pumps  to be extended by RBI: Govt
The RBI may extend deadline for reduced Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges at petrol pumps to promote digital transactions, Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said. "It is up to RBI how long they will extend that model of MDR," he said. Earlier, RBI slashed MDR charges on card payments and cut levies on online transactions from January 1-March 31

Deposits under PMGKY  could not be done by Cooperative banks : Govt
Government clarified that Co-operative Banks are not authorised to accept deposits under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Deposit Scheme (PMGKDS). The scheme allows assessees to disclose previously unaccounted and undeclared income under its ambit.
The PMGKDS permits voluntary declarations of previously undisclosed income with an effective tax rate of 50% and requires assessees to deposit a further 25% of such wealth into a four-year interest-free deposit. The scheme was launched on 17th of last month and will remain open for declarations upto 31st March this year.
3qtr net profit raises 670% to Rs 373.47 Crore for Indian Bank
Public sector Indian Bank has registered a 670 per cent rise in its third quarter net profits ending December 31, 2016, to Rs 373.47 crore.
The Chennai-headquartered bank had registered net profits at Rs 48.47 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

On entry of Reliance Jio, the profit of Airtel falls 55% :
Telecom major Bharti Airtel’s consolidated net profit for December quarter fell by around 55% to Rs.504 crore, against the year-ago period. The fall was attributed to a tariff war due to Reliance Jio’s entry leading to a sharp fall in money earned per customer. Notably, Airtel had over 36 crore customers overall as on December 31, 2016.
Bilateral trade of US$ 17 billion done in 1st half of 2016 between India  & UAE
Bilateral trade between the UAE and India accounted for US$ 17 billion during the first half of 2016. The two countries are aspiring to increasing trade by 60 percent to US$ 100 billion, reaching US$ 368 billion by 2020. UAE's imports from India rose to US$ 11 billion in the first half of 2016, while non-oil exports to India reached 6 billion during the same period.
India is the UAE's second largest trading partner after China. The UAE, on the other hand, is the largest Arab investor in India and the 11th foreign investor, in terms of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs). The total value of Emirati investments in India was estimated at US$ 9 billion in 2015.

'Instant Apps' Google's new apps can be used without downloading is begins testing:
Google has started testing 'Instant Apps' that can be used without downloading over half a year after first announcing the feature. Apps are broken into very small packets that can run almost instantly by tapping on a URL. The limited test by Google includes apps from BuzzFeed and live video streaming startup Periscope.

1st military communications satellite of Japan launched today
Japan on Tuesday launched its first military communications satellite to quadruple the broadband capacity of the country's self defence forces and allow communications across a larger part of the territory. This comes amid concerns over increased Chinese military activity in the East China Sea while Japan and China remain locked in a territorial dispute over a group of uninhabited islands.

14 agreements got signed between India, UAE :
India and the UAE today inked 14 agreements in various areas including in defence, maritime transport, comprehensive strategic partnership, shipping, agriculture and allied sector, trade, oil storage and management, energy efficiency, road transport and highways and prevention and combating human trafficking
The agreements were signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Rahul Dravid to receive honorary doctorate award from Bangalore University
Former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the Bangalore University during the university's 52nd annual convocation which will be held on January 27. The 44-year-old was earlier awarded an honorary doctorate by Karnataka's Gulbarga University in 2014. Notably, Dravid's mother was a professor at Bangalore University's Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.

International coffee chain Starbucks has nominated Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to its Board of Directors along with Lego Executive Chairman Jørgen Vig Knudstorp and Walmart-owned Sam's Club CEO Rosalind Brewer. Hyderabad-born Nadella was named as a prospective member of Starbucks' Board for his "understanding of how technology will be used and experienced around the world."

Lalchungnunga, a 15-year-old football player from Mizoram, has been chosen to train at Germany's top division football league, Bundesliga, for six years. Nicknamed 'Mizo Messi', the boy was scouted at a Tata Trust football academy, which has a memorandum of understanding with the state government to promote talent. The boy is one of eight kids born to a daily wager.

World record set by Chinese man by wheeling 20.8 kilometres in 46 minutes:
Chinese stunt driver Han Yue recently set the Guinness World Record for the 'fastest side wheelie lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a car' by completing the lap in 45 minutes and 59.11 seconds. Driving a red Mini Cooper, Yue navigated 73 turns, spanning 20.8 kilometres, without letting the car's right wheels touch the ground.
