Himachal Pradesh govt releases Rs 25 cr for restoration of roads, electricity & water supply in snow bound areas
i) In Himachal Pradesh, the state government has released 25 crores rupees for restoration of roads, electricity and water supply in snow bound areas.
ii) Chief Minister of state Virbhadra sigh reviewed the position of roads, electricity, and water and essential commodities in the areas affected by heavy snowfall at a high level meeting. Meanwhile, the severe cold wave continued throughout in the state. Met department has predicted clear and sunny weather in coming days.
Assam govt comes up with e-Wallet
i) The Assam government will be shortly launching its indigenously-developed e-Wallet, Tokapoisa.in, to enable the people of the state for hassle-free online transactions in local language.
ii) The mobile application Tokapoisa.in has been developed by the Assam Electronics Development Corp. Ltd. Besides being an e-Wallet, it will be a virtual payment terminal.
DigiDhanMela organises in Chandigarh today
i) A DigiDhanMela has been organised in Chandigarh today to promote digital transactions. AIR correspondent reports that in this unique mela, many visitors including house wives, students and shopkeepers are getting training in the Digital Pathshala where experts of financial institutions are explaining everything through demonstrations.
ii) About 70 stalls have been put up by banks and other organisations for opening new accounts, Aadhar seeding of accounts, PoS machine distribution and other services in the mela.
iii) In the afternoon a lucky draw will be organised under the Lucky GrahakYojna and DigiDhanYojna. In the evening a Cashless Dangal will be held and the winners will be given cashless awards by transferring the amount in the account of the winner.
Sex ratio in Haryana touches 900-mark for first time in 20 years
i) Sex ratio at birth (SRB) in Haryana past year touched the 900-mark for the first time in almost two decades.
ii) Prime Minister NarendraModi launched the ambitious “BetiBachao, BetiPadhao” (B3P) campaign against female foeticide in Panipat in January 2015.
iii) Two years later, Haryana, notorious for its skewed sex ratio and patriarchal mindset, saw a historic turnaround.
Mumbai WiFi becomes India's largest public WiFi service
i) Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Monday activated 500 WiFi hotspots at various locations across the city of Mumbai, and announced that Mumbai WiFi is the largest public WiFi service in the country.
ii) Claiming that it is one of the largest in the world too, Fadnavis said, "As committed, 1,200 WiFi hotspots will be activated by May 1, 2017."
Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2017: PM holds delegation-level talks with Rwandan President
i) Prime Minister NarendraModi held delegation-level talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Gandhinagar, Gujarat today ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit 2017. Both leaders discussed a wide range of issues, and India's increasing engagements as a development partner for Africa.
ii) A joint statement issued after the talks said, the two leaders agreed to raise the level of cooperation to a Strategic Partnership. They reiterated their strong commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
iii) The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding on Forensic Sciences by the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University to support Rwanda’s National Police in modernizing Forensic investigations.
World's Largest LED Street Light Replacement Project Launched
i) Union Power Minister PiyushGoyal launched the "world's largest" LED street light replacement project completed by SDMC in south Delhi wherein two lakh conventional street lights have been replaced with energy efficient LEDs.
ii) The initiative under the Street Lighting National Programme being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited of Ministry of Power, will save 6.10 crore units of electricity per year thus reducing the electricity bill by 54 per cent.
PM Modi to inaugurate 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit at Gandhinagar today
i) Prime Minister NarendraModi will inaugurate the 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit 2017 at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, in a short while from now.
ii) This year's biennial flagship event of the state is hosting Prime Ministers, Presidents, Deputy Prime Ministers and ministers of several countries apart from CEOs of Fortune 500 companies.
iii) Large delegations from 12 partner countries of Vibrant Gujarat including the US, the UK, France, Australia & Canada are also attending the summit.
iv) AIR correspondent reports the summit aims to provide a platform to debate global economic and social issues on the lines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
INTERNATIONAL:
i) Italy will reopen its embassy in Tripoli today, which was closed in 2015 along with all other Western embassies due to violence. Announcing the re-opening, Italy's foreign ministry said, the reopening of the embassy shows confidence in the process of stabilising the country.
ii) Earlier, Interior Minister Marco Minniti held talks with Libyan officials on cooperation in the fight against illegal immigration and terrorism. Libya's Foreign Minister MohamadTaherSiala said, Libya have agreed to build new relations of cooperation on the basis of the friendship treaty signed in 2008.
BANKING NEWS:
SBI waives MDR charges for small merchants for one year
i) Country's largest lender SBI has waived Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on debit card transactions for all small merchants with annual turnover of up to Rs 20 lakh for one year.
ii) SBI further said the move is targeted primarily towards a segment of population and small merchants, who have not yet experienced the convenience of Card Payments.
Axis Bank becomes third lender to offer block chain service
i) Private sector Axis bank has become the third lender in the country to announce usage of block chain solutions for its operations, after its peers ICICI Bank and Yes Bank.
ii) The Shikha Sharma-led bank, the third largest private sector lender, will be using the upcoming technology for cross-border remittances.

Air India ranked third-worst performing airline in the world
i) Every year, the aviation insights company FlightStats puts together a list of the international airlines with the best on-time performance records.
ii) Air India ranked third-worst performing airline in the world
iii) Icelandair – 41.05% El Al – 56% are on first and second position respectively.
APPOINTMENTS:
Flipkart replaces BinnyBansal with KalyanKrishnamurthy as CEO
i) Flipkart has elevated former Tiger Global Management executive Kalyan Krishnamurthy as its new chief executive, replacing co-founder BinnyBansal, who has been named as the group chief executive of India’s largest online marketplace.
ii) Co-founder SachinBansal continues to be executive chairman.
iii) Under the new structure and in his new role as Flipkart CEO, Krishnamurthy will be responsible for the Flipkart profit and loss account, the company said. He will report to BinnyBansal.
SBI Pension Funds appoints Kumar Sharadindu new MD & CEO
i) SBI Pension Funds, a subsidiary of State Bank of India, has appointed Kumar Sharadindu as its managing director and chief executive.
ii) SBI Pension Funds is one of the three pension fund managers appointed by the regulator PFRDA to manage the pension corpus of employees enrolled under the National Pension System for government employees.
iii) Sharadindu was a general manager at SBI Corporate Centre, Mumbai, heading the private equity business.
iv) He has held several crucial assignments in his banking career spanning over three decades in areas of credit, treasury, risk and large corporate lending.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
Big B awarded by US embassy for spreading awareness on TB
i) Actor Amitabh Bachchan was given an award on Sunday by the US Embassy for his contribution to the US-India partnership on tuberculosis.
ii) Bachchan, who suffered from tuberculosis in 2000, is a brand ambassador for the initiative.
iii) "I hope to continue to do my bit in this partnership to end tuberculosis in India," said Amitabh.
Claudio Ranieri wins Best FIFA Men's Coach of the Year
i) Leicester City's Claudio Ranieri won the Best FIFA Men's Coach of the Year award after beating Portugal's Fernando Santos and Real Madrid's ZinedineZidane on the shortlist.
ii) Ranieri beat strong competition from Zidane, who led his Real Madrid side to their 11th UEFA Champions League title in his first season as a manager and also won the 2016 UEFA Super Cup and 2016 FIFA Club World Cup.
iii) Silvia Neid won the Best Women's Coach award after Germany won the Olympics gold medal.
iv) It's the third time she has been honoured by FIFA after winning the World Women's Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2013.
IIT-Kharagpur alumnus garners prestigious 'Technical Oscar'
i) An IIT Kharagpur alumnus has won the prestigious Technical Achievement Award (the Scientific & Technical Awards prize), popularly called the `Technical Oscar', awarded by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.
ii) ParagHavaldar, who graduated from IIT-Kharagpur in 1991 with a degree in computer science and engineering, has been awarded for "the development of expression-based facial performance-capture technology at Sony Pictures Imageworks".
iii) Havaldar's popular works include `Watchmen', 'Green Lantern', 'The Amazing Spider-Man', 'Beowulf ' and 'Hancock'.He will be awarded a certificate from the Academy at Beverly Hills on Feb 11.
Cristiano Ronaldo wins Fifa best player award
i) Cristiano Ronaldo was named the world's best player at the inaugural Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich. Real Madrid and Portugal forward Ronaldo beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to the prize.
ii) Ronaldo also won the Ballon d'Or in December with both honours recognition for success in the Champions League with Real and Euro 2016 with Portugal. Carli Lloyd of the United States was named the world's best female player.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
Humanoid robot Ira to be deployed at HDFC Bank branch
i) Private lender HDFC Bank launched what it claimed to be the first ‘humanoid’ in the domestic banking space, and also said it is looking to partner with start-ups having technological solutions for rural operations.
ii) The bank showcased human-sized robot Ira, developed in association with Kochi-based Asimov Robotics,
iii) The robot will perform a limited role and act largely as a receptionist, though the humanoid can also move around in the branch. Chugh claimed this is the first ‘humanoid’ in the domestic banking space.
ISRO, CNES ink pact on satellite launch
i) Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO, and French Space agency (CNES) today signed a partnership agreement in satellite launch technology.
ii) The agreement was signed between ISRO Chairman Kiran Kumar and CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall in the presence of visiting French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Marc Ayrault in Bengaluru today.
iii) Space cooperation between France and India spans over 50 years and is one of the cornerstones of the Indo-French strategic partnership.
iv) ISRO is the second partner of CNES, in terms of volume, after NASA. Strengthening the CNES-ISRO partnership will enable France to benefit from the Indian model of streamlining the costs of space programmes.
SPORTS NEWS:
Kane Williamson climbs to fourth in ICC T-20 rankings
i) New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has become the second batsman after Indian skipper ViratKohli to feature in the top-five of the ICC rankings for all three formats by climbing to fourth in the latest Twenty20 list issued in Dubai today.
ii) Williamson has broken into the top five after a good series against bangladesh which his side won 3-0. Williamson scored 73 not out, 12 and 60 to finish with a series aggregate of 145 runs. For this consistency, he has been rewarded with a jump of two places which has put him in fourth position.
iii) Williamson already occupies positions in the top-five of Tests and ODIs. He sits in fourth place in the Test rankings, while he is ranked fifth in ODI rankings.
