Centre assistance of Rs.489 cr for improving water supply and sewerage networks in Delhi
i) Ministry of Urban Development has approved the Annual Action Plan of Delhi for 2016-17 under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) with a project investment of Rs.266 cr for improving water supply and sewerage networks.
ii) Similar Action Plan for 2015-16 of Delhi with an investment of Rs. 223 crwas approved earlier in January this year. With this, the total investment approved for Delhi under Atal Mission for improving basic urban infrastructure is Rs.489 cr.
Cabinet approves International Solar Alliance (ISA)
i) The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval to the proposal of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) for ratification of ISA’s Framework Agreement by India.
ii) The ISA will strive to bring together more than 121 solar resource rich nations for coordinated research, low cost financing and rapid deployment. The foundation stone of the ISA Headquarters was laid at Gwal Pahari, Guragaon in Haryana.
Kerala to seek Union government’s approval for using deer antlers in Ayurveda medicines
i) The Kerala Government has approached the Union Government for allowing use of antlers of spotted deer and sambar of Ayurveda medicines.
ii) In this regard, Kerala State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) under chairmanship of CM Pinarayi Vijayan has forwarded proposal to National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) and Ministry of Environment and Forests.
iii) SBWL is seeking suitable amendments to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 for using the antlers for medicinal purposes.
Kerala's Nedumkayam becomes 1st cashless, digital tribal colony
i) Nedumkayam, Nilambur in Malapuram District of Kerala has become the first cashless and digital tribal colony in the country.
ii) The people of this colony, in spite of threats from the Maoists, are all set for digital transactions. The declaration was made after adequate training for the entire tribal people of the colony in cashless transaction and digital literacy.
iii) The training was completed with the support of National Service Scheme, volunteers of an Arts and Science College at Kondotty and Jan Sikshan Sansthan, of Malappuramdistrict.
i) Gujarat Government announced its ‘Biotechnology Policy-2016’ to establish state as a preferred destination for manufacturing of biotechnology products.
ii) The policy has provisions for various incentives for investors who are keen to set up their units in the state.
iii) It aims to take annual turnover of biotechnology products to Rs 15,000 crore from current f Rs 4,500 crore turn over within next 3-4 years and make Gujarat top state in this sector in the country.
i) India’s first Digi Dhan Mela was held on 26 December 2016 in Gurugram, Haryana. The mela is a first of its exercise in the country and is meant to promote cashless transactions in the post-demonetisation period.
ii) More than 3,000 peoples Banking accounts were opened and about 7,000 persons has been imparted training about digital payments during the mela.
iii) Earlier, the "Lucky Grahak Yojana" and "Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana" awards have been launched to encourage people to adopt the cashless mode of payments.
INTERNATIONAL:
India, Bhutan signed MoU for technical cooperation in infrastructure engineering
i) India and Bhutan in December 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for extending technical cooperation in infrastructure engineering.
ii) The MoU was signed between the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) of India and Bhutan’s Department of Engineering Services in Thimpu. Under the MoU, the CPWD will assist Bhutan in –
a) Promoting sustainability in the built environment
b) Capacity building through training of Bhutanese manpower
c) Benchmarking in building and road sectors
d) Besides, the CPWD also deploy engineering experts in Bhutan to achieve the above objectives.
BANKING NEWS:
Maharashtra village, Sangli, adopted for Digital Transactions by Bank of Maharashtra
i) Pune based financial institution, Bank of Maharashtra has helped in transformation of the village of Malangaon of Sangli district into a completely cashless village.
ii) The measure has been taken as a step ahead of withdrawal of the 500 and 1000 currency notes by the central Government, as a push to cashless society, financial inclusion which became the need of the hour.
iii) Ravindra Prabhakar Marathe, Managing Director, Bank of Maharashtra stated that the bank has complete support to the central Government’s decision for a cashless economy and adoption of Malangaon is a testament to the fact.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY NEWS:
Indian Army partners with IIT Gandhinagar for critical technology requirements
i)Indian Army has inked an agreement with IIT Gandhinagar to set up a research and development (R&D) cell at the IIT campus to identify problems and possible solutions for the Indian Army.
ii) The agreement also enable the IIT and Indian Army to collaborate in areas including critical technology requirements of Indian Army, sharing of professional and technical knowledge.
iii) This is an initiative which would result in meaningful realization and efficient transfer of research into customized solutions for the Indian Army.
APPOINTMENTS:
Indian Olympic Association appoints Suresh Kalmadi, Abhay Singh Chautala as life presidents
i) The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on 27 December 2016 appointed Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala as its life presidents.
ii) The IOA unanimously appointed the Kalmadi and Chautala to the post during its Annual General Meeting in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
iii) A life president of IOA is an honorary post with no voting rights or involvement in day-to-day functioning of the body. In its 89-year old history, IOA has had 12 presidents, including the current incumbent N Ramachandran.
Govt names Professor Viral Acharya as Deputy Governor of RBI
i) Government today appointed Professor Viral Acharya as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India who is Professor of Economics in a US university.
ii) The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared Mr. Acharya's appointment for three years. The RBI had a vacancy for deputy governor after Urjit Patel was promoted to Governor later this year.
Tata Motors signs up Akshay Kumar as brand ambassador for commercial vehicles
i) Tata Motors roped in Bollywood star Akshay Kumar as brand ambassador for its commercial vehicle (CV) business unit.
ii) Indian cinema's 'original Khiladi' will make his blockbuster entry in this new role at the launch of Tata Motors' latest offering in commercial vehicles, slated in January 2017
iii) Tata Motors' association with Kumar for commercial vehicles will be supported by a multi-media campaign, beginning in the first week of January 2017

Rajasthani writer Satya Narayan chosen for Bihari Puraskar
i) Eminent Rajasthani litterateur Satya Narayan has been chosen for the 26th Bihari Puraskar, 2016 for his Hindi book titled, "Yeh Ek Dunia".
ii) Instituted in 1991 by the Foundation, the award which is named after famous Hindi poet Bihari, recognises outstanding work in Hindi or Rajasthani, published during the last ten years by a Rajasthani writer.
iii) K K Birla Foundation announces that the twenty-sixth Bihari Puraskar for the year 2016 will be given to Dr Satya Narayan for his Hindi reportage 'Yeh Ek Dunia'. This book was published in 2010
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
China launches 2 high-res remote sensing satellites
i) China today successfully launched two high-resolution remote sensing satellites to get commercial images. State-run Xinhua news agency reported, the satellites were launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in Shanxi Province .
ii) The satellites launch followed release of a white paper yesterday which said China plans to form a BeiDou network consisting of 35 satellites for global navigation services by 2020. It is expected to compete with America’s Global Positioning system.
SPORTS NEWS:
Vijay Goel to felicitate Indian junior hockey team
i) Sports Minister Vijay Goel will felicitate Indian junior hockey team in New Delhi today, which recently won the World Cup 2016.
ii) India scripted a new chapter in hockey history, regaining the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup after a gap of 15 years, defeating Belgium 2-1 in the final in Lucknow.
iii) The Cup adds another jewel to India’s golden hockey history, which boasts of eight Olympic titles and one World Cup at the senior level.
Meghalaya to host 2022 National Games
i) Meghalaya will host the 2022 National Games coinciding with its 50 years of statehood. In its meeting in Chennai, Indian Olympic Association, IOA accepted Meghalaya's bid to host the National Games overshadowing four other bidders Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Chhattisgargh and Uttarakhand.
ii) Meghalaya will be the third northeastern state after Manipur and Assam to host the National Games. Goa will host the next National Games in November 2017.
OBITUARY:
Former MP CM Sunderlal Patwa passes away in Bhopal
i) Former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and senior BJP leader Sunderlal Patwa passed away this morning in Bhopal. He was 92.
ii) Mr Patwa suffered heart attack while sleeping. He was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh twice.
iii) He was also a member of Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in the Centre.
Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher passes away
i) Carrie Fisher, known for her role as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars movie, passed away on 27 December 2016 following a cardiac arrest. She was 60.
ii) She is survived by her mother, daughter and beloved French bulldog, Gary.
Astronomer Vera Rubin, who confirmed dark matter, passes away
i) Pioneering astronomer Vera Rubin passed away on 25 December 2016. She was 88.
ii) Rubin, who helped discover evidence of dark matter, passed away due to natural causes.
