International Mountains Day: December 11th
i) According to U.N. - There is increasing awareness that mountains are fragile ecosystems and are of global importance as the source of most of the Earth’s freshwater, repositories of richbiological diversity, popular destinations for recreation and tourism and areas of importantcultural diversity, knowledge and heritage.
ii) Theyear 2002 was the International Year of Mountains. As this year drew to a close, the UnitedNations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed December 11 to be International Mountain Day.
Govt to soon launch helpline number 14444 to promote digital payments
i) A nationwide toll-free helpline number '14444' will be launched soon to educate people and provide support related to cashless mode of transactions. Nasscom President R Chandrashekar said government has sought the IT body's help in providing support on a mass scale to people. He said,Nasscom is providing callcentre support to the project.
ii) MrChandrashekar said the service is expected to be operational within a week. He said, it is to help people at the first level to zero-in on the option most suitable for them that depends on person whether he has feature phone or not, Aadhaar number or not etc.
iii) He said once people will start using a particular methodology then helpline of particular digital payment service provider will also be made available through the helpline.
Andhra Pradesh CM launches website of APEDB
i) Andhra Pradesh CM launches website of state Economic Development Board (AP-EDB) yesterday in Vijayawada. The website 'apedb.gov.in' is aimed at providing a repository of knowledge on investing in Andhra Pradesh, policies of various sectors and also gives the investor the various investment opportunities the state has to offer.
ii) The APEDB formed under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister is the single point of contact for investments and partnerships in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
iii) Speaking on the occasion the Chief Minister said that the website will provide valuable insights to the investor seeking to invest in the state of Andhra Pradesh and will also help the investor track the opportunities that exist in the state.
MP CM launches Narmada SevaYatra today
i) Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched Narmada SevaYatra at Amarkantak today. The five months long Yatra aims at turning the Narmada river pollution free and unceasing river.
ii) MrChouhan performed religious rituals before kick-starting the campaign. He also went to ashrams of religious leaders to invite them to join the Yatra.
iii) The chief minister said that he will join the campaign every week. MrChouhan said that the participation of public and society will be ensured in it. Our Correspondent reports that the Narmada is a life line for at least 30 per cent of Madhya Pradesh.
Water route between Delhi-Agra to be started soon: NitinGadkari
i) Union Minister NitinGadkari has said government is focusing on the development of water transport in a big way as it is the cheapest means of transportation. He said that a water route between Delhi to Agra will be started soon.
ii) Gadkari was said this today after laying foundation stone of several road projects at Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. The minister has been pushing for the development of inter-state water transport and such a service has already been started between Varanasi and Malda.
iii) He also launched Rs 4,000 crore worth road connectivity projects in Agra. The projects included Rs 425 crore southern bypass road.
iv) Addressing a public rally in the Taj city, the minister said that work on the Rs 375-crore northern bypass and Rs 1000 crore Agra-Bareilly highway with six lanes will start soon.
Samata Express renamed to promote brand Vizag Steel
i) The Hazrat Nizamuddin-Visakhapatnam train is renamed as Vizag Steel Samta Express to promote its brand Vizag Steel which was flagged off at Nizamuddin station by Mr. Prabhu and Mr. Singh in the presence of RINL Chairman-cum-Managing Director P. Madhusudan.
ii) The Samata Express or Samta Express is a Super Fast Express train plying between VisakhapatnamandHazratNizamuddin near New Delhi
INTERNATIONAL:
World Bank cancels $100 million loan for Pakistan
i) The international financial institution, World Bank has cancelled a $100 million loan to Pakistan that was meant to be for a natural gas efficiency project.
ii) The loan was cancelled, as the gas distribution company that was responsible for the project, failed to make any progress in achieving its developmental objectives and showed very less interest in the project overall.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY NEWS:
NABARD to spend Rs 228 Crore to encourage digital transaction in rural area
i) Nabard will provide a grant of Rs 228 crore for deployment of point of sale machines and procurement of EMV based debit cards for farmers.
ii) Nabard Chairman Harsh Kumar Bhanwala said demonetisation has posed a huge challenge to the cashbased transactions in rural economy and there is a pressing need to move towards digital transactions.
APPOINTMENTS:
AdwaitaGadanayak to head National Gallery of Modern Art
i) Odisha-based acclaimed sculptor AdwaitaGadanayak has been appointed as the new director of National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). He will replace Rajeev Lochan.
ii) Prior to this, Adwaita is working as the director of the Bhubaneshwar-based KIIT School of Fine Art.
Senior IRS officer Rajendra Kumar appointed new CBDT member
i) Senior IRS officer RajendraKumarwas today appointed as the new Member of the CBDT, the policy making body for the Income Tax Department. The orders for appointment of Kumar, a 1980-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet today.
ii) The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can has six members. With this appointment there will still be one vacancy in the board.

President Pranab Mukherjee presents Shilp Guru Awards, National Awards to master crafts persons
i) President Pranab Mukherjee has presented the Shilp Guru Awards and National Awards to master craftspersons for the year 2015 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The recipient of the award included nine Shilp Gurus and 19 National Awardees.
ii) The awards are given in recognition of excellent craftsmanship and the major role played by them in continuing craft as a vital part of the traditional heritage.
Highest French civilian distinction conferred on John Kerry
i) The highest French civilian distinction, Officer of the Legion of Honour, was conferred today on US Secretary of State John Kerry for his contribution in peace effort.
ii) French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault bestowed the award on Kerry after the two held talks on Syria's war. Calling him a friend to France, the Foreign Ministry said he earned the distinction for his indefatigable efforts in favor of peace.
iii) Kerry has visited Paris countless times as secretary of state for high-level diplomatic meetings on Syria, Ukraine and other hotspots.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
i) Japan launched a cargo ship bound for the International Space Station (ISS), carrying a 'space junk' collector that was made with the help of a fishnet company.
ii) The vessel, dubbed "Kounotori" (stork in Japanese), blasted off from the southern island of Tanegashima around 10.30pm local time attached to an H-IIB rocket.
iii) Scientists at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) are experimenting with a tether to pull junk out of orbit around Earth, clearing up tonnes of space clutter including cast-off equipment from old satellites and pieces of rocket.
SPORTS NEWS:
i) Mumbai's IqbalSayed, who works as a civil engineer with Reliance Infrastructure and Mumbai Metro, became thefirst Indian to win a medal at the Mr Olympia event, after securing a silver medal in the event.
ii) Sayed beat participants from 20 countries to finish second in the Olympia Amateur Asia 2016's Classic Bodybuilding category.
i) In Cricket, ViratKohli today became the first Indian captain to score three double centuries in Tests. Kohli amassed his third double ton - all coming this year - as India consolidated their position in the fourth Test against England in Mumbai.
i) The Indian ODI team moved to the third place in the ICC ODI team rankings after New Zealand slipped to fourth following their 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia.
ii) The Australian ODI side remained the top-ranked team in the list ahead of South Africa. Notably, Pakistan is ranked eighth, behind England, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
OBITUARY:
i) Former Mumbai Mayor and ex-Shiv Sena legislator Ramesh Prabhu passed away in Mumbai today after a prolonged illness. He was 78. His son-in-law and former Congress MLA Krishna Hegde informed that Mr. Prabhu had been ailing for the past five months.
ii) The Sena leader was the Mayor of Mumbai in 1987. Mr. Prabhu had won the Vile Parle Assembly segment in Mumbai in a byelection in 1987-88 and retained the seat in 1990 polls.
