World Pneumonia Day Observes today : 12th November
World Pneumonia Day is observed across the world on 12 November. The day is annually observed to raise awareness about pneumonia, the world’s leading killer of children under the age of five; promote interventions to protect against, prevent and treat pneumonia; and generate action to combat pneumonia.
This year theme is, "Keep the Promise, Stop Pneumonia Now". The United Nations (UN) first celebrated the day on November 12, 2009 when over 100 organisations joined to form the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia.
Public Service Broadcasting Day being observed today
Today is Public Service Broadcasting Day which is celebrated every year on November 12 when Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi visited the studio of All India Radio, Delhi for the first and the last time in 1947 . He addressed the displaced people who had temporarily settled at Kurukshetra in Haryana after partition. A function has been organised in the premises of All India Radio, Delhi to mark the day.
1st Indian National Open Accuracy Paragliding takes off in HP
In Himachal Pradesh, as many as 107 pilots from 15 countries took part in the first Indian National Open Accuracy Paragliding Championship at Bir-Billing, 60 kilometres from Dharamsala today. Nine women paragliders, three of them Indians, two Russian and one each from South Africa, Italy, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey will compete in the four-day international meet. The director of the event said, one has to complete at least three of a total of four tasks assigned during the course of the competition.
President of India inaugurates meeting of American Association of Thoracic Surgeons
Inaugurating a meeting of American Association of Thoracic Surgeons and International Coronary Congress in New Delhi, Mr Mukherjee said, the sector is a priority area for the country. He said, doctors have a responsibility to work on creating greater awareness about prevention and treatment among the general population. The most common cause leading to coronary artery disease and heart attacks are wrong lifestyle choices. Mr Mukherjee said, precautionary strategies have to take centre-stage in the fight against heart diseases.
Delhi a wakeup call for world on air pollution: UNICEF
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said the record air pollution in Delhi is a wake up call for the world and if decisive actions are not taken to check it, the smog in National Capital and its adverse impact on the daily lives of its citizens will become a commonplace phenomenon. The UNICEF said it is a wake up call to all countries and cities where air pollution levels have resulted in death and illness amongst children. Air pollution level hit record high in New Delhi in the past week following Diwali celebration.
TAFE setting up Centre of Excellence in Rajasthan
TAFE, the world’s third largest tractor maker, in collaboration with the Rajasthan government, is setting up a Centre of Excellence — ‘JFarm Rajasthan’ — and a Custom Hiring Centre in six zones in Rajasthan at a total outlay of Rs.970 crore.
MallikaSrinivasan, Chairman & CEO, TAFE said: “This JFarmcentre will showcase the latest and best in agronomy and farm practices, latest trends in production, protection and processing of crops, and also the world’s best in terms of showcasing farm mechanisation trends and their applicability to India.”
Maharashtra plans 'e-eye surveillance' system to track wild animals
The Maharashtra government's 'Vision 2030 document' has proposed to implement 'e-eye surveillance' project to track the movement of wild animals 24x7. The policy document also seeks to rehabilitate more villages out of the protected areas to reduce man-animal conflicts. Further, the document proposes to set up a special tiger protection force in tiger reserves in the state.
Maharashtra taps solar energy to power agriculture sector
The Maharashtra government has drawn up a scheme to ensure power supply to the agriculture sector for 12 hours a day through feeder-based solar energy, said CM DevendraFadnavis on Friday. Under the scheme, farmers can use feeder-based solar pumps instead of individually buying pumps. So far, 10,000 solar agricultural pumps have been set up across the state, Fadnavis added.

Vice President-elect Pence to head Trump transition team
US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Vice President-elect Mike Pence as the head of his White House transition team that would shape the direction of the real estate tycoon's administration. Three of Mr Trump's children as also part of the group.
The Republican, who won the general elections earlier this week against Democrat Hillary Clinton, will be sworn in as the 45th US President on January 20th, replacing Barack Obama, whose tenure ends that day. Till then, the 70-year-old has a transition team which would help him prepare to hit the ground running from day one.
Sydney to host Invictus Games in 2018: Britain's Prince Harry
Australia will host the 2018 Invictus Games for wounded military personnel, Britain's Prince Harry announced on Saturday. More than 500 serving and former personnel from 17 nations will compete in the multi-sports competition in Sydney.
Harry, who launched the first such games in London in 2014, said Australia was chosen because it was an iconic city with a proud military heritage and sports-mad fans.Athletes, who have been wounded, injured or become ill in service, will compete in both individual and team sports including swimming, archery, cycling, track and field, and wheelchair rugby. The games have been held in London and Orlando, and are due to be held in Toronto next year.

SBI To Issue 13.63 Crore Shares To Shareholders Of Associate Banks
SBI today said that the central board today approved issuance of 13.63 crore shares to minority shareholders of its three listed subsidiaries and Government of India, that wholly owns BharatiyaMahila Bank (BMB), as part of consolidation exercises.
The board has "approved issuance of maximum 13,63,65,146 equity shares, of face value of Re 1 each, to the shareholders of State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Travancore (SBT) and the Government of India for its shareholding in BMB as on the record date at the agreed swap ratio...," SBI said in a filing to the BSE. SBI will issue 4.42 crore shares to Government of India for its 100 per cent stake in BMB.

India pledges USD 10.95 mn for UN development activities
India has pledged about 10.95 million dollar for development activities across several UN bodies for the year 2017, besides processing contribution for the Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery and for the Victims of Torture and UN Volunteers.
First Secretary in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Mahesh Kumar said this at a Pledging Conference for Development Activities in Geneva. India has announced contribution of about 10.95 million dollar development activities for 2017, including 4.5 million dollar for the UN Development Programme , 1.92 million dollar for the World Food Programme, 1.25 million dollar for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Near East and a million dollars towards UN Women. These apart, India also approved contributions for many other UN bodies, he said.

India, Japan signed 10 agreements including nuclear deal, space, agriculture
India Japan AgreementsIndia and Japan signed ten agreements to boost the bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The agreements were inked on 11 November 2016 in presence of Prime Minister NarendraModi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe. Prime Minister was on a three-day visit (10 November to 12 November 2016) to Japan. Agreements/MoUs that were inked and exchanged includes
Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy: The present Agreement provides for bilateral cooperation in the field of Nuclear Energy. This would provide for the development of nuclear power projects in India and thus strengthening of energy security of the country. The present agreement would open up the door for collaboration between Indian and Japanese industries in our Civil Nuclear programme.
Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the Manufacturing Skill Transfer Promotion Program: The MoC that envisages to train 30000 Indian youth in the Japanese style manufacturing in the next 10 years was inked between the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Cooperation in the Field of Outer Space: The present MoU inked between ISRO and JAXA provide for cooperation in satellite navigation, planetary exploration and space industry promotion. It also seeks for joint missions and studies, joint workshops and training, joint use of ground systems for mutual support, and personnel exchange. It also seeks to establish JWG and sign Implementing Arrangements to carry out specific cooperative projects.
MoU on Mutual Collaboration in Marine and Earth Science and Technology: This MoU aims at promoting cooperation in the areas of joint survey and research. It also aims to promote an exchange of scientific visits by researchers and experts, joint scientific seminars and workshops and exchange of information, data and studied results. It also seeks to promote cooperation in any other mutually agreed forms of cooperation.
MoC in the Field of Agriculture and Food Related Industry: It aims at deepening the bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food industries that includes food value chain networking and protecting Geographical Indication (GI) of agriculture products.
MoU for Transport and Urban Development: The pact seeks to enable cooperation between National Investment and Infrastructure Fund Limited and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation. The cooperation includes promotion in investment in infrastructure projects in railways and transport, toll roads, urban development, port and airport terminals, logistics and any supporting industries for these sectors.
MoU in the Field of Textiles: The MoU that aims to improve the quality of Indian Textiles for conformity assessment for Japanese market was signed between Textiles Committee of Union Ministry of Textiles and Japan Textiles Products Quality and Technology Centre (QTEC). It involves capacity building measures for the Textiles Committee and aligns the Indian Quality Control measures in line with Japanese market and technical standards.
MoC in the Field of Cultural Exchange: It seeks to provide a framework for bilateral cooperation in the field of Sports ahead of the forthcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics & Paralympics. Under this MoC the two sides would seeks to promote
I. Training of athletes and coaches
II. Programmes for sports science and anti-doping
III. Programmes for developing sports education, infrastructure and management
IV. Exchange visits of sports leaders, administrators, professionals and experts.
MOU for cooperation in the fields of academics, business, cultural cooperation, disaster management and environmental protection: It was signed between the State Government of Gujarat and Hyogo Prefectural Government, Japan. As per the agreement, a steering committee will be constituted to oversee the implementation of the MOU. It will also identify the agencies to carry out designated activities.

PM Modi& his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe witnessed exchange of MoU of cooperation between Gujarat Government & Hyogo Prefecture. Dravid Appointed Brand Ambassador
Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been made brand ambassador for the second T20 World Cup for the Blind. The tournament will be played from January 28 to February 12. The tournament will be held across eight Indian cities. Finland to be world's 1st country to axe all school subjects
Finland has decided to eliminate all the traditional subjects from its schools including literature, physics, history, and math by 2020, to become the world's first country to do so. Finnish students will be taught events and phenomena by the schools instead of the subjects. The new schooling system will be introduced for senior students, beginning at the age of 16.
11-year-old Pune girl wins ‘Doodle 4 Google’ 2016 contest
11 year old Pune girl AnvitaPrashantTelang has been named national winner of the “Doodle 4 Google” contest. The sixth standard student from Vibgyor High School in Balewadi area was chosen for her Doodle submission on the theme titled “If I could teach anyone anything, it would be”. PNB installs a mobile ATM van outside AIIMS hospital
The Punjab National Bank has installed a mobile ATM van outside the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi to ensure that people do not face inconvenience due to cash unavailability, reports said. This comes after the invalidation of old 500 and 1,000 notes, which has affected the cash circulation. AIIMS had earlier exempted clinical charges below 500 till November 11.

Indian Women's team wins Gold at the 7th World Carrom Championship
Indian women’s carrom team defeated Sri Lanka to win the gold at the seventh World carrom championship in Birmingham (UK) on Friday. India's S Apoorwa and KajolKumari also won gold in the women's doubles event. Meanwhile, the men's team lost to Sri Lanka to win the silver medal in the competition.
8-yr-old Indian wins gold in U-8 World Kickboxing C’ship
Tajamul Islam, an eight-year-old girl from Kashmir, has won the gold medal at the under-8 World Kickboxing Championship in Italy. Tajamul won six games in five days and defeated an American opponent to clinch the gold at the 90-nation tournament. She qualified for the event after winning gold in the sub-junior category at the 2015 National Kickboxing Championship in Delhi.
Noted geophysicist JanardhanNegi passes away
Noted geophysicist Janardhan G Negi passed away on 10 November 2016 in Hyderabad following a brief illness. He was 81. He was known for making outstanding contribution in understanding earthquakes, mass extinctions, especially dinosaurs and the movement of the Indian sub-continent plates.
Hollywood Actor Robert Vaughn Dies
Hollywood Actor Robert Vaughn, best known as the secret agent Napoleon Solo in The Man from UNCLE, has passed away. The actor had been battling acute leukemia. He was also famous for his role as Lee in the Magnificent Seven, and television roles in Hustle and Coronation Street. He was the last surviving member of the film’s original “seven”.
