- Today (5th November 2016) is the 1st World Tsunami Awareness Day.

- Aim of this Day : to spread awareness among people across the world about Tsunami.
- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had constituted the day by adopting a resolution in December 2015.
- Theme of Tsunami Awareness Day 2016 : "education and evacuation"
- The UK government has announced changes to its visa policy for non-EU nationals to curb rising immigration figures, which will affect a large number of Indians including IT professionals.

- Under this, anyone applying under Tier 2 intra-company transfer category (ICT) would have to meet a higher salary threshold, which has been raised from £20,800 to £30,000.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin today unveiled a 17-metre statue of Prince Vladimir the Great, a 10th-century ruler whom both Russia and Ukraine believe to be the founder of their states.

- Note : The statue was inaugurated on the Day of National Unity in Russia.
- The 7th edition of India-Bangladesh joint military exercise SAMPRITI-2016 has commenced to practise counter-terrorism and disaster-management operations.

- The 14-day joint military exercise will be held during from 5th to 18 November 2016 at Shaheed Salauddin Cantonment in Tangail, Dhaka (Bangladesh’s Capital).
- Latvia has become the first country in the Baltic Sea area to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to link up with China’s One Belt and One Road (OBOR) Initiative.

- The MoU was signed after Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s meeting with his Latvian counterpart Maris Kucinskis in Riga (capital of Latvia).
- It was Chinese Premier’s first visit to the European Union country.
- Note : Besides, Latvia and China also singed five agreements on cooperation in such areas as small and medium-sized enterprises, transportation and logistics.
- India and Venezuela have signed an oil production deals worth about 1.45 billion US dollar to increase oil production.

- The agreement was signed between Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Venezeulas Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), and Venezuela’s consortium Delta Finance BVin Caracas.
- The Indo-Venezuelan partnership created in 2009 is expected to double the daily oil production of San Cristobal field from 20,000 to 40,000 barrels of oil.

- A joint team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Indian Mountaineering Foundation has become the first to scale the base of the 7,090-metre-high Mount Kangto, the highest peak of Arunachal Pradesh.

- The expedition was flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu in September, while the feat was achieved in October.
- The Union Government has announced that the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 which envisages supply of subsidised foodgrains has been implemented across the country.

- Announcement in this regard was made by Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan after last two remaining states Kerala and Tamil Nadu rolled out the NFSA from November 2016.
- The Central Vigilance Commission will introduce a “perception index” in different government departments and public sector organisations from next year to assess the public perception vis-a-vis corruption.
- Starting January 1, a lecture series called "IIT Pal" will be telecast on a national television channel by the government, to help students who cannot afford coaching classes clear the IIT entrance exam.

- About 80% of the teachers recording the lectures are from IIT Delhi.
- There would be 200 lectures each on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated an online survey for Overseas Indian Citizens in order to assess levels of awareness about the registration and voting process.

- The objective of the survey is to study and determine the registration and participation rates among overseas electors.
- The unique survey will help in gathering opinions and voting preferences of Overseas Indians.
Science & Technology
- India's Mars Orbiter Mission Mangalyaan was launched on this day (5th November) in the year 2013.

- This mission was developed at a budget of $74 million (₹450 crore), making it the cheapest Mars Mission in the world.
- Mangalyaan's cost was less than Hollywood space adventure film Gravity, made with $100 million (nearly ₹600 crore) and approximately one-tenth of the NASA's Maven explorer.
- China has unveiled its largest unmanned aerial vehicle 'CH-5' which can stay airborne for up to 50 hours without the need to refuel.

- The drone has a wingspan of 21 metres and will have a flight range of 20,000 km.
- It will be able to carry about 1,000 kg of equipment and up to 24 missiles.
- Technology giant Google has tied up with Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) for 360 degree virtual tour of 280-odd monuments across the country.

- ASI has given its permission to Google for creating the virtual tour of the monuments which would be available in the Google maps.
- Some of the major monuments are Taj Mahal, Victoria Memorial and the ruins of Hampi.
- Note : Of the total 280 monuments 30 are in West Bengal and eight are from Kolkata.

- 26 year old Uppma Virdi, an Indian hailing from Punjab and settled in Australia received the 'Businesswoman of the Year Award' at the India Australia Business Community Awards held in Sydney.

- Virdi, a lawyer by profession, is the founder of the start-up 'Chai Walli', which sells tea blended with different flavours.
- She also holds 'Art of Chai' workshops in Australia.
- The Sonu Sood starrer historical adventure film 'Xuanzang' has been chosen by China as its official entry for the 89th Academy Awards (Oscars).

- The 43-year-old actor is making his debut in the Chinese film industry with the movie, where he portrays the character 'Harsha'.
- Directed by Huo Jianqi, the film also stars Indian actors Neha Sharma and Ali Fazal.
Business & Economic Affairs
- President Pranab Mukherjee today approved the 2% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) to central government employees, a move that could benefit 50.68 lakh employees and 54.24 lakh pensioners.

- Important Points to Note :
- DA is provided to employees and pensioners to minimise the impact of price rise on their earnings.
- Earlier this year, DA was hiked 6% to 125% of the basic pay.
- Andhra Pradesh has been ranked number one in the World Bank’s ‘Energy Efficiency Implementation Readiness’.
