1. ICGS Aryaman and Atulya Commissioned into Indian Coast Guard

1. The Indian Coast Guard Ships (ICGSs) ‘Aryaman’ and ‘Atulya’ were commissioned into Indian Coast Guard in Kochi, Kerala. These ships are the eighteenth and nineteenth in the series of twenty Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited.

2. The ships have been christened ICGS ‘Aryaman’ and ‘Atulya’. Aryaman literally meaning is ‘Possessor of Greatness’ and Atulya meaning is ‘Unrivalled’. Both FPVs are 50m long and have displace of 317 tonnes of water. They can achieve a maximum speed of 33 knots with range of 1500 nautical miles.

2. Smooth-coated otter sighted for first time in Krishna sanctuary

1. Smooth-coated otter was sighted for the first time in the mangrove forest near the Krishna wildlife sanctuary (KWS) in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. 

2. In all, seven otters were sighted in the mangrove forests and brackish water channels of Eelachetladibba and Lankevennedibba and other areas outside the KWS. The presence of the otter is a key indicator for rise of the mangrove cover in the KWS.

3. BCCI approves use of DRS in India-England Test series

1. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given its consent for using the Decision Review System (DRS) in the forthcoming five-Test series against England in November 2016. 2. BCCI will use the DRS on a trial basis to evaluate the improvements and changes made to the system over a period of time. Earlier, BCCI as well as many members of the current Indian cricket team including Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had objected used of DRS as is not 100% accurate.

4. Union Government launched UDAN for Regional Air Connectivity

1. Union Government unveiled the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam naagrik), which seeks to get more people to fly in the smaller towns. The Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju who launched the scheme in New Delhi said the scheme is expected to be rolled out by January 2017.

2. The scheme UDAN envisages providing connectivity to un-served and under-served airports of the country through revival of existing air-strips and airports. The scheme would be in operation for a period of 10 years.

3. The Ministry of Civil Aviation took a major step today towards making flying a reality for the small town common man.

5. India, World Bank sign $650 Million agreement for Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor

1. India on 21 October 2016 signed a 650-million US dollar loan agreement with the World Bank for the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor-III (EDFC-III) Project. The project will benefit industries of Northern and Eastern India, which rely on railway network for transportation of material inputs and exports.

2. These industries also depend on railway network for transportation for the distribution of bulk processed and semi-processed commodities and consumer goods. Railway passengers will also be benefitted through decongestion of the existing passenger lines.

3. The project is being developed by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL). It would also help in creating jobs in the northern and eastern regions of the country.

6. Centre approves 4 FDI proposals

1. The Centre has approved four foreign direct investment proposals worth ₹2,060 crore which includes ones from Sharekhan Ltd, IBM India, IFC FIG and Diavikas Capital.

2. The decisions are based on the recommendations of Foreign Investment Promotion Board September 26, according to a Finance Ministry release.

3. Of the four proposals, only the one made by Sharekhan Ltd involves infusion of funds into India. The government has approved Sharekhan’s proposal to acquire up to 100 per cent of the share capital in the company other than the shares held by Human Value Developers Private Ltd, BNP Paribas SA France and/or one or more of BNP’s French subsidiaries.

4. Approval was also given to IBM India’s proposal to merge its wholly owned subsidiaries — Telelogic India Private Ltd, Unica Softtech Systems India Private Ltd and Bigfix Software (India) Private Ltd (all dormant companies) — into its another wholly-owned-subsidiary, Sterling Commerce Solutions Private Ltd, which is an investing company.

7. PM Narendra Modi announces India's first Railway University in Vadodara
1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the integrated terminal building of Vadodara's Harni
Airport on 22nd October 2016. He is also scheduled to attend a programme to distribute artificial limbs and other implements to more than 8000 'Divyangs' (disabled persons) in the city.
2. The event has been jointly organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Kanpur-based Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), and Vadodara district administration, stated a government release.
