- PM Narendra Modi to visit Japan on 11th &12th November 2016.

- During this visit, he is going to hold annual summit meeting with Japanese counterpart Shinzō Abe.
- Discussions on bilateral, regional & global issues will be held.
- UN General Assembly committee approves resolution for treaty to ban nuclear weapons, despite strong opposition from nuclear-armed nations.
National Current Affairs
- Today (28th October 2016) is National Ayurveda Day.

- This day is being observed by the Ministry of AYUSH on the occasion of Dhanteras.
- Theme of the Year : 'Ayurveda for Prevention and Control of Diabetes.'
- Govt has also launched 'Mission Mudhumeha Through Ayurveda' on occasion of National Ayurveda Day.
- The Union Cabinet today approved the setting up of a National Academic Depository (NAD), which will be a bank of all digitised education records from school onward.

- The Cabinet decided that the depository would be established in three months and cover almost all education institutions by 2017-18.
- HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said it would address the problem of fake certificates.
- The Union Cabinet today approved the signing and ratification of an agreement between India and Estonia on the transfer of sentenced persons.

- The agreement shall facilitate the Indian nationals imprisoned in Estonia or vice-versa to be shifted to their respective countries for the remainder of their sentence.
- This repatriation shall also facilitate their social rehabilitation.
Banking & Economic Affairs
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted startups to raise External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) upto USD 3 million in financial year to boost innovation & job creation.
- Bangladesh’s economy grew at a record 7.11% in the last financial year amid stronger industrial performance.

- This has helped the country break out of the 6% ‘growth trap’, which it could not cross in the last one decade.
- Bangladesh, as per the purchasing power parity, now stands at 33rd position among the world economies.
- The Cabinet today gave in-principle approval to Niti Aayog’s proposal for the Strategic sale of about 20 Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

- According to the plan being drawn up, the government would lessen its stake in profit-making BEML from the present 54% to 28%.
- Meanwhile, it will fully exit Scooters India, Pawan Hans, Hindustan Newsprint, and Ferro Scrap Nigam, among otherss.
New Appointments
- The World Bank has appointed Clifton Cortez as its first advisor tasked with promoting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) issues in the bank's development work.

- Note : The newly created senior position is part of the bank's commitment to researching and curbing discrimination against LGBTI persons across the 136 countries where it operates.
Deaths
- Japanese Prince Mikasa (100), believed to be the world's oldest imperial family member, passed away today.

- Mikasa was the fifth in the line of succession to the Japanese throne.
- Kevin Curran (59), who worked on The Simpsons for 17 years, passed away.

- Note : He won six Emmys for his work on The Simpsons and Late Night with David Letterman.
- Goa's first woman CM Shashikala Kakodkar passed away.
Awards & Honors
- The European Parliament today awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to two Yazidi women, Nadia Murad and Lamiya Aji Bashar, for their human rights campaign.

- Note : They had been held by the Islamic State as sex slaves and started campaigning against the group after escaping to Germany.
Sports Current Affairs
- India has won its first-ever medal in an international roller skating racing event at the ongoing Asian Championships in China.

- The trio of Dhanush Babu, Vikram Ingale and Nikhilesh Tabhane won the bronze in the 3,000-metre team relay event.
