1. Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh
It is the longest and the second largest tributary river of the Ganges (Ganga) in northern India. The river originates from the Yamunotri glacier & meets the Ganga River in Triveni Sangam. The cities situated on the river are:
- Agra
- Allahabad
- New Delhi: 375 KM
- Mathura
- Auraiya
- Etawah

Betwa River, Sindh River, Hindon River, Chambal River.
- Starting Point: Yamunotri, Champasar Glacier
- Ending Point: Triveni Sangam
Total Length: 1,376 km
Basin area: 366,223 km²
Economically
Around 57 million people are dependent on this river as it gives an annual flow of 10,000 cubic billion metres & 96% of supply for irrigation annually.
Allahabad is the only city where three rivers meet together & is known as Sangam & is the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna & Saraswati.
Current Status
- Government has decided to build more bridges on Yamuna to connect south, north & east Delhi.
- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slams Agra Development authority for allowing the builders on the flood plains of Yamuna.
- The union minister suggested a fast-track boat service on the Yamuna River.
- The NGT has banned the farming along the Yamuna River as it contains heavy metals & acidic which is injurious for health.
- Delhi government applies the Seechewal model of Punjab that involves eco-friendly and natural processes to treat wastewater and sewage.
- The NGT constituted a 5 member committee to inspect Delhi Jal Board to clean the Yamuna river project.
2. Sabarmati in Gujarat
The Sabarmati is one of Major River in the western India. The river originates from the Dhebar Lake in Aravalli Range of the Udaipur District of Rajasthan and meets the Gulf of Cambay of Arabian Sea. The cities situated on the river are:
- Ahmedabad
- Gandhinagar

Wakal river, Sei Nadi, Harnav River, Hathmati River, Watrak River, Madhumati River.
- Starting Point: Aravalli Range
- Ending Point: Arabian Sea
Total Length: 371 km
Basin area: 21674 km2
Economically
The soil on the banks of Sabarmati River is very fertile, which is a major factor for irrigation.
Current Status
- In Ahmedabad Sabarmati river is treated from sewage to keep the water flowing.
- The Construction & Filling work of retaining walls on Sabarmati River will be completed soon as the phase – I have been completed & phase – II is under progress.
- On 31st August PM Narender Modi launches a new irrigation Scheme- Sauni Yojna which was initiated in 2012.
3. Saryu in Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand
The Saryu River is the symbol of Epic Ramayana & also in Rigveda & Atharva Veda. This river originates from Himalaya in Nepal & travels to Ayodhaya in Uttar Pradesh & uttrakhand, then finally meets the Ganga River.

This river is a tributary of Ganga River.
- Starting Point: Sarmool
- Ending Point: Pancheswar
Total Length: 350 km
Economically
Saryu River plays a vital role for the city & life of Ayodhya. This river is a holy belief of Hindus & Hindu dip.
Current Status
- A single – Line Bridge across the Saryu River was a multi – span through Girder Bridge.
4. Alaknanda in Uttrakhand
The Alaknanda is a Himalayan River & one of the main source streams for Ganga River due to its length & discharge. Alakananda River meets Dhauliganaga River at Vishnuprayag, Nandakni river at Karnaprayag, then it meets Bhagirathi River at Devprayag where it finally becomes ganga river.This river originates from Satopanth river in Uttrakhand.

- Starting Point: Satopanth
- Ending Point: Devprayag
Total Length: 190 km
Basin area: 10,882 km2
Economically
Alaknanda plays a major role for Ganga & is also Known as Panch Prayag. It is a holy destination of Hindus in Badrinath.
Current Status
- There are 37 hydroelectric dams planned & under operation on this river.
- Also, there are 23 other proposed projects power potential project on Alaknanda river basin.
