1. Devendra Jhajharia wins gold medal at 2016 Rio Paralympics

  • India’s Devendra Jhajharia (36-year) has won Gold Medal in the men’s javelin throw, F46 event at the Rio Paralympics 2016.
  • He becomes only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for the country.
  • Earlier, Jhajharia won gold in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics.
  • He improved his own 2004 record of 62.15 metres with a world-record throw of 63.97 metres.
  • Devendra Jhajharia was awarded the Arjuna award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2012.

2. Track Asia Cup cycling to begin in New Delhi

  • India is hosting the Track Asia Cup cycling competition at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex velodrome in New Delhi.
  • The event has been recognised by the International Cycling Federation.
  • India would be fielding a strong 29-member contingent in the competition.
  • More than 150 athletes participate from 11 other countries (Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kazakhastan, Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Macau, Malaysi,Pakistan).

4.  Andhra Pradesh becomes second state to achieve 100% electrification

  • Andhra Pradesh has achieved 100%  household electrification after Gujarat, as per a report published by JM Financials based on a national level survey.
  • About 35% rural households in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Assam still lacked access to power supply.
  • Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu proposed investment of  Rs. 20,000 crore over five years will strengthen electricity distribution systems.

5. BRICS urbanisation forum meet begins in Vishakhapatnam

  • The BRICS Urbanisation Forum Meet (3rd edition) has started in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The three days meet has been inaugurated by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of M. Venkaiah Naidu (Urban Development Minister).
  • The conference will also discuss how to increase the productivity,make a separate urban finance system and the creation of employment opportunities.

6. Aleksander Ceferin elected new UEFA President

  • Slovenian lawyer, Aleksander Čeferin (48-years) has been elected as the new President of the European football governing body, UEFA,at UEFA’s Extraordinary Congress.
  • He replaces banned former chief Michel Platini.
  • He head of the Slovenia FA scored a decisive 42-13 votes victory over Dutchman Michael Van Praag at election congress of the European football federation in Athens.

7. Anoop K Sharma new CMD of Shipping Corporation of India

  • Anoop Kumar Sharma has taken the charge of  the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) for a period of three years.
  • The Shipping Corporation of India is a Government of India Public Sector Enterprise with its headquarters in Mumbai.
  • SCI  operates and manages vessels that service both national and international lines.

8. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to be awarded by Jewish rights group

9. Indian-origin scientist bags Lemelson-MIT Prize

  • An Indian-origin scientist Ramesh Raskar (from Nasik) has bagged the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Prize worth 5 lakh US dollars for his groundbreaking inventions to create solutions to improve lives globally.
  • He has founded of the Camera Culture research group at the MIT Media Lab and an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences
  • He has more than 75 patents to his name and having written more than 120 reviewed publications.

1. Insurance scheme for cattle launched in Haryana

  • The Haryana state Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister OP Dhankar has launched ‘Pashudhan Bima Yojana’ in the State at a function in Jhajjar.
  • Dhankar has also presented documents of the Pashudhan Bima Yojana to cattle breeders and urged them to take maximum benefit of this scheme.
  • Under the ‘Pashudhan Bima Yojana’ insurance cover would be provided for cows, buffaloes, bulls, camel at a premium of Rs 100 and for sheep, goat, pig at Rs 25 for a period of three years.
  • The scheme is free of cost for cattle breeders belonging to Scheduled Castes therefore no premium would be charged from them

2. LIC signs up Axis Bank as bancassurance partner

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has signed an agreement with private sector lender Axis Bank as its bancassurance partner where in the bank will distribute LIC’s products to its customers.
  • In the first phase, bank will distribute LIC’s life insurance products across its branches in West Bengal, Bangalore and Haryana.
  • Axis Bank is the third largest private sector bank in India.

3. IRS officer Rani Singh Nair takes over as new chairperson of CBDT

  • Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Rani Singh Nair  took over as the new chairperson of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • Central Board of Direct Taxes  is the policy-making body of the I-T department under the Union Finance Ministry.

4. IRCTC’s Food on Track app ties up with Mobikwik for e-cash payments

  • Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Mobile payments company MobiKwik will power e-cash payments on IRCTC’s e-catering app, Food on Track.
  • This app will allow passengers to book and get food from their preferred restaurants and delivered right at their train coaches.
  • MobiKwik is a mobile wallet and online payment system where a user can store money to make recharge and pay utility bills ,shop using wallet with over 50,000 merchants.

5. Oracle India Joins SBI to foster Digital Skills Initiative

  • Oracle India has announced a corporate citizenship collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI)
  • Oracle India will launch the ‘D-Change’ programme which will support education and learning, women’s empowerment and rural skills development in the country.
  • D-Change” aims to build awareness and promote financial literacy among girls and women, especially those that are underprivileged.
  • It will merge SBI’s financial expertise and expansive reach with Oracle’s technology leadership to help local communities drive substantial change and develop a skilled economy.

6. ICICI Bank reduces lending rate by 0.05%

MCLR-Vs-Base-Rate-

  • ICICI Bank has announced 0.05% reduction in its marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR).
  • The overnight Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rate (MCLR) will be 8.90% under the revised rate structure which is effective from today.
  • The one-year MCLR has moved down to 9.10%.

Note:- 

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced the MCLR from April 1 this year for faster transmission of its policy actions into actual lending rates by the banks.

Main components of MCLR:

  • Marginal cost of funds
  • Negative carry on account of CRR
  • Operating costs
  • Tenor premium

7. Monthly honorarium of ASHAs doubled from Rs 500 to 1,000 : HaryanaHaryana

  • Monthly honorarium of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) in Haryana has been doubled from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000 .
  • An additional amount of 41.73 crore rupees has been approved on account of honorarium for ASHAs and incentives of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs).
  • Each ASHA will be given an added incentive of 50%  in her monthly earned incentive under National Health Mission, which would be maximum of 1,500 rupees.
  • This would benefit 19,281 ASHAs in the State.

8. RBI launches ‘Sachet’ portal to rein in illegal money deposits

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan has launched a web portal ’Sachet- http://ift.tt/2axbs2O’ to curb illegal collection of deposits.
  • A website from which the members of public would be able to obtain information regarding entities that are allowed to accept deposits, lodge complaints and also share information regarding illegal acceptance of deposits by unscrupulous entities
  • The website also incorporates regulations prescribed by all financial regulators that different entities have to follow
  • The website would also help enhance coordination among regulators and State Government agencies and thus be useful in curbing instances of unauthorized acceptance of deposits by unscrupulous entities.

9. Corporation Bank launches group insurance scheme for borrowers

  • Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Corporation Bank Jai Kumar Garg has launched “group credit life insurance scheme” of  Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in Mangaluru. 
  • The scheme has been made available initially at all the branches of Mangaluru Zone which would later be extended to all branches.
  • The Scheme is available to bank’s customers in the age group of 18 to 60 year who have taken term loans.
  • It is a single premium group term insurance plan offering insurance cover to the loan availed by the customer, in the event of unfortunate death of the borrower.

10. Government fixes an inflation target of 4 percent for five years

  • The government has set an inflation target of 4% for the next five years.
  • Monetary Policy Committee to be set-up soon it will have to adhere to the target till March 31, 2021.
  • Last year ,the government and RBI had reached an agreement on a monetary policy framework that had set the inflation target at 4%  plus or minus 2%.
  • Earlier, The government has notified rules for setting up the Monetary Policy Committee giving affect to amendments in the RBI Act.
