Surprisingly, Urjit Patel was the expert commentator on UPA’s first 100 days on Hindi News Channel, although he had no prior media exposure in India.

Why Dr. Patel?

His academic record is unblemished that signifies continuity or smooth transition. Yes he does continuity of policies particularly in all important area of monetary policy. Urjit Patel was the main author of the report on which the present monetary policy framework is based, so continuity of policies particularly in all important area of monetary policy ensured. Urjit Patel was the main author of the report on which the present monetary policy framework. So certainly there is continuity as far as the inflation targeting and monetary policy is concerned. We have to wait and see how things plan out because just to put a small caveat that the entire idea of inflation targeting is now undergoing a great deal of rethinking particularly in the context of merging markets. We are open to new ideas as in when this happens because particularly the global financial crisis and the entire field of economic and macro economic is undergoing a great deal of rethinking. So, while there is a advantage of continuity, the continuity should be with an open mind. He is going to ensure continuity and understand the current challenges.

1

The biggest problem which we are facing now is inflation v/s growth. The sigma of that is to create growth in the economy. The momentum should be in pace i.e. someone who understands what Dr. Raghuram Rajan did and needs to be done beyond.

Dr. Patel is a very fine macro economic expert and he also has both domestic and international experience since he was in IMF in the first part of his career. He has a good experience in the private sector working in the IDFC for a number of years.

Major Challenges

  • Introduction of Monetary Policy Committee
