Topic 1 : "Trumping the odds"
- Trumping - to outrank or defeat someone or something
- Odds - difficulties
- Nominee - a person who is nominated as a candidate for election
- Cheer - encouragement
- Primaries - in the US, an election in which people choose who will represent a particular party in an election for political office
- Ripple - an emotion that spreads gradually through a person or a group of people
- Consternation - a feeling of worry, shock, or confusion
- Detractors - people who publicly criticizes someone
- Opponent - someone who competes with or opposes another in a contest, game, or argument
- Possibly - perhaps (used to indicate doubt)
- Mogul - an important or powerful person
- Trounced - defeat heavily in a contest
- Rivals - people competing with you for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity
- Resounding - very great
- Heavyweights - important people of a specific field
- Festivities - celebrations
- Fly fishing - the activity of trying to catch fish using a hook made to look like a fly or other insect in order to attract the fish
- Mow - cut down (grass) with a machine
- Distaste - a dislike of something that you find unpleasant or unacceptable
- Apotheosis - the highest point in the development of something
- Consistent - always behaving or happening in a similar, especially positive, way
- Subtle - small but important
- Pander to someone / something - to please other people by doing or saying what you think they want you to do or say
- Racist - believing that other races are not as good as your own and therefore treating them unfairly
- Claims - to say something
- Vitriolic - intentionally unkind or causing hurt
- Differently abled - disabled
- Quicksand - deep wet sand that sucks in anyone trying to walk across it
- On the one (or the other) hand - used to present factors which are opposed each other
- Tacitly - understood without being openly expressed
- Irony - a strange situation in which things happen in the opposite way to what you would expect
- Cohort - a friend or supporter, especially of someone you do not like
- Rudimentary - basic, and not detailed or developed
- Wink - to quickly close and open one eye as a sign to someone, for example a sign that what you have just said is a joke or a secret
- Nod - to move your head first downwards and then upwards, to show that you agree, approve, or understand
- Equated - to consider one thing to be the same as or equal to another thing
- Healing - to make or become well again
- Chasm - a very large difference between two opinions or groups of people
- Overzealous - too enthusiastic and eager
- Armed - using or carrying weapons
- Fearsome - frightening
- Arsenal - a collection of weapons
- Unshakeable - if someone's trust or belief is unshakeable, it is strong and cannot be made weaker or destroyed
- Determination - the ability to continue trying to do something, although it is very difficult
- Adoption - the decision to use or accept a particular idea, method, law
- Usher - to guide
- Invested - put (money) into financial schemes, shares, property
- Significant - sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention / noteworthy
- Reshuffle - interchange the positions of government ministers
- Appealed - make a serious / urgent request
- Primacy - importance
- Urging - to advise someone very strongly about what action or attitude they should take
- Bipartisan - involving two political parties with different ideas or policies
- Reiterated - to repeat something in order to make it very clear to people
- Credentials - personal qualities, achievements, or experiences that make someone suitable for something
- Reform - make changes in something in order to improve it
- Obstructionism - the act of intentionally stopping or slowing down an official process
- Conciliatory - trying to end an argument and make people feel less angry
- Hammer something out - to reach an agreement or solution after a lot of argument or discussion
- Consensus - a general agreement
- Levy - impose (a tax, fee, or fine)
- Dispute - a disagreement or argument
- Narrowed - limited to a small area of interest, activity, or thought
- Contention - the disagreement that results from opposing arguments
- Explicit - clear and exact
- Amendment - a change to a law that is not yet in operation and is still being discussed
- Obvious - easy to see, recognize, or understand
- Regime - a particular way of operating
- Subsume - include or absorb (something) in something else
- Octroi - tax that you pay on goods when you bring them into a particular local area
- Compliance - to act according to an order, set of rules, or request
- Nightmare - an extremely unpleasant event or experience
- Incentivising - motivate or encourage (someone) to do something
- Exchequer - the government department that receives and gives out public money
- Warding something off - to prevent someone or something unpleasant from harming
- Incipient - just beginning
- Inflationary - a general, continuous increase in prices
- Enlightened - knowing the truth about something
- Sagacity - having or showing understanding and the ability to make good judgments
- Elusive - difficult to describe, find, achieve, or remember
