First Indian city to get 'Water Metro’: Kochi
·        Kochi to become the first Indian city where water connectivity will be developed as a feeder service to the metro rail.
·        The boats will provide the same transportation experience as the metro, and will be called 'Water Metros'.
·        Financing for this project is being done by the Indo-German Bilateral Cooperation.
·        The Kerala government and German funding agency KfW will sign an agreement for this project.
·        The amount to be invested in the project is Rs 747 crores.
Maharashtra CM launches pilot project of e-complaint system
·        Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched a pilot project of e-complaint system on an experimental basis in Pune.
·        After the pilot project, the system will be launched across the state in next eight months.
·        The project has been launched during the concluding ceremony of 14th Maharashtra Police Duty Meet at SRPF ground at Ramtekdi.
Govt fixes year-end target of 100 Per Cent Aadhaar-Linked DBT
·        All Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) will be linked to Aadhaar by the end of the current calendar year.
·        While setting the ambitious target, the Centre has also decided to bring all subsidies and welfare schemes under the DBT net by March 31, 2017.
·        The DBT programme, a major reform initiative to check leakages of welfare funds, was launched on January 1, 2013 with regard to 24 selected schemes of eight ministries. At present, benefits under 74 schemes of 17 ministries are being reached to the targeted people through DBT.
KSSIDC to hold udyog mela in Bengaluru on July 31
·        The Karnataka State Small Industries Development Corporation (KSSIDC) in partnership with Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) is organising a udyog mela in Bengaluru on July 31.
·        The mela will be held from 9 am to 5 pm at the Regional Institute of Co-operative Management, Padmanabhanagar. “About 150 medium and large MNCs and Indian companies are participating. We are expecting around 15,000 to participate at the mela,” said B Gurappa Naidu, Chairman, KSSIDC.
LS Speaker Sumitra Mahajan sets up 9-member panel to probe Bhagwant Mann incident
·        Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said AAP MP Bhagwant Mann's videography of the Parliament House complex had put its security "in peril" and asked him not to attend the House till a decision is taken on the matter while setting up a nine-member panel to probe the issue.
·        The panel, chaired by BJP member Kirit Somaiya, has been asked to submit its report by August 3, while Mann has time till tomorrow morning to submit his explanation to the committee.
Tourism ministry sanctions 25 projects worth Rs. 2,048 crore
·        India's Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned 25 projects worth Rs. 2,048 crore under the Swadesh Darshan (domestic sightseeing) scheme to as many as 21 states. The aim of the scheme is to position tourism as a major engine of economic growth and job creation.
·        The states and the Union territories include Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura, the ministry said in a statement.
INTERNATIONAL:
World's largest seaplane unveiled by Chinese state company
·        China has unveiled (announce publicly for the first time) the world's largest amphibious (suited for both land and water) AG600 aircraft.
·        Beijing (capital of China) plans to use the aircraft for marine missions and fighting forest fires.
·        AG600 has rolled off (to flow or fall off) a production line in Zhuhai in southern China.
·        It measures 37 meters (121 feet) in length with a wingspan of 39 meters (128 feet).
India, Mexico target tourism, telecom to boost ties
·        India and Mexico are charting out a new path in bilateral trade and investment ties with a focus on sectors including renewable energy, telecom and medical devices.
·        This was agreed upon during the recent meeting in Mexico of the bilateral High Level Group (HLG) on Trade, Investment and Economic Cooperation. The HLG, which was established in 2007, had met on July 13-14 after a gap of four years.
Nepal PM steps down, country plunged into new political uncertainty
·        Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli on Sunday resigned, plunging the Himalayan nation into a fresh bout of political uncertainty.
·        He submitted his resignation to President Bidhya Devi Bhandari at the President’s Office here, hours before Parliament was to vote on a no-trust motion against his government, officials here said.
·        “Before arriving here, I held a meeting with the President and put in my papers,” he told Parliament while replying to the no-trust motion.
·        Oli was elected the 38th Prime Minister of Nepal in October 2015.

RBI imposes penalty on Bank of Baroda in fraud case
·        The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on Bank of Baroda (BoB) after it found irregularities in the Rs 6,100-crore scam that was unearthed last year.
·        "The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 50 million (Rs 5 crore) on Bank of Baroda... Pursuant to the internal audit of the Bank of Baroda, the Reserve Bank of India and investigative agencies in October 2015 were advised by the Bank of certain irregularities observed," Bank of Baroda said in a BSE filing.
BUSINESS NEWS:
Verizon to announce $5 billion deal to buy Yahoo
·        Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) will announce an agreement to buy Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) for about $5 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter.
·        The announcement will come before the start of New York trading hours, the source added.
·        The deal will end months of uncertainty about Yahoo's future after the company announced plans to review strategic alternatives in February.
·        Yahoo and Verizon both declined to comment.
·        Bloomberg first reported the deal would be announced on Monday for $4.8 billion.

Ericsson CEO Vestberg steps down with immediate effect

·        Swedish mobile telecoms gear maker Ericsson's Chief Executive Hans Vestberg has stepped down with immediate effect, the company said on Monday.
·        Vestberg, who has been CEO since 2010, has come under fire in recent months, with Swedish media questioning his leadership and pay, particularly after weak quarterly results in April sent its share price down 15 per cent in a single day.
·        The CEO's departure comes days after the company reported that like-for-like sales had declined for a seventh consecutive quarter.

Indian calligrapher Muqtar Ahmed wins top prize at Cairo International Festival
·        Muqtar Ahmed, an Indian Arabic calligrapher, has won one of the top prizes at the Cairo International Festival for Arabic Calligraphy.
·        The Bengaluru-based calligrapher’s work was selected for second prize from among 700 works by 115 participating artists from 15 Arab and other countries.
·        The works that reflected the beauty of Arabic calligraphy were displayed at the Art Gallery of the Cairo Opera House, the venue of the eight-day festival which concluded on Sunday.
Kanyakumari — first woman violinist to get Sangita Kalanidhi award
·        Kanyakumari, an outstanding and versatile violinist, will get the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy this year.
·        With this, she becomes first female violinist chosen in the history of this prestigious award. The award will be conferred on her at the 'sadas' on January 1, 2017.
·        She will also preside over the 90th annual conference of the Music Academy scheduled from December 15, 2016 to January 1, 2017.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
A type of Culex mosquito can also transmit Zika
·        Brazilian scientists have identified another type of Zika-transmitting mosquito.
·        The public Brazilian laboratory Fundacion Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) announced that researchers found the presence of the Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito infected by the Zika virus in three out of 80 groups of mosquitoes analysed up until now.
·        The 80 groups were from the metropolitan area of Recife, regional capital of Pernambuco in the northeast.
SPORTS NEWS:
India beat West Indies in 1st Test Match
·        India defeated West Indies in Antigu by an innings and 92 runs in the first cricket Test match.
·        India has taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
·        India notched up 566 for eight declared in their first innings & then bowled out West Indies for 243 to take a lead of 323 runs.
·        Forced to follow-on, West Indies were bundled out for 231 in their second innings.
·        The second test will begin on July 30.
Feliciano Lopez wins Swiss Open Gstaad
·        Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez won the Swiss Open Gstaad after beating the Dutch Robin Haase in the final 6-4, 7-5 in 77 minutes here on Sunday.
·        Lopez finally managed to win the tournament after he lost it a decade ago, while this is the Spaniard's first title on clay and his fifth overall, reports Efe.
·        The Spaniard previously won the 2004 Vienna Open, the 2010 Johannesburg Open and the Eatsbourne open in 2013 and 2014.
Lewis Hamilton overtakes Nico Rosberg in F1 title race after Hungarian Grand Prix win
·        British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix for Mercedes to take the lead in the championship from team mate Nico Rosberg for the first time this season.
·        Rosberg, who started on pole position but is now six points behind the Briton after 11 of the 21 races, finished second with Australian Daniel Ricciardo third for Red Bull.
Manavaditya Rathore wins bronze at Junior World Cup
·        Promising Indian shooter Manavaditya Rathore won the trap bronze medal in the 'Champion of Champions' match at the Junior World Cup in Porpetto, Italy.
·        While Manavaditya, son of Athens Olympics silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, won the bronze in trap event, Anant Naruka bagged a bronze in 'Champion of Champions'
OBITUARY:  
Last of India’s Progressive artists, Syed Haider Raza, dies aged 94
·        Syed Haider Raza, the last surviving member of the six modern artists who founded the influential Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group in 1947, has died. He was 94.
·        Mourners gathered in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh state on Sunday as Raza’s last rites were conducted in the village in which he was born in 1922.
