Hello everyone, in our Lesson 9, we learnt about the prefix apoApo represents the meanings away, from. Today we shall see the prefixes arch, archi and archaeo. Happy Reading :)

Day 9 : Arch, Archi, Archaeo

  • arch, archi - chief; ruler; first
  • archaeo - ancient; primitive
Let's try to understand these with some examples....
  • archaeology (noun) = Study of first or early art and customs.
    • archaeo (arkhaios) - Prefix = ancient history 
    • ology - Suffix = study of
  • architecture (noun) = the art and study of designing buildings. 
    • archi (arkhi) - Prefix = chief
    • tect (tekton) - Root = builder
    • ure - Suffix = the action of
Let's have a look at some more words with arch, archi and archaeo prefixes, for better understanding.
  1. architect = chief, first builder
  2. monarch = a single ruler 
  3. archbishop = chief bishop
  4. anarchy = a state without government
  5. archenemy = main enemy (baddest enemy)
  6. patriarch = the male head of a family or tribe
  7. matriarch = a woman who is the head of a family or tribe
  8. archetype =a very typical (best) example of a certain person or thing (a specific type)
  9. oligarchy =  (government by) a small group of powerful people
Home Work :
Try to guess the meanings of the following elements.

  4. para-
a. change
b. outside
