Topic 1 : "The censor is snipped"
  • Snipped - cut (something) with scissors
  • Handed out something - to give something to each person in a group or place
  • Scissor-happy - using scissors and then cut something up that you shouldn’t
  • Overzealous - someone who gets too excited about something
  • Disclaimer - a formal statement saying that you are not legally responsible for something
  • Exercised - applied / used
  • In line with - similar to, or at the same level as something
  • Provisions - the act of providing something
  • Mandate - an official order to do something
  • Impulse - a sudden strong wish to do something
  • Candid - truthful and straightforward / frank
  • Take something out of context - to use only part of something, so that the original meaning is changed
  • Guardian of the honour - a person who protects the honour of somebody
  • Umbrage - to feel upset or annoyed (because you feel that someone has been rude or shown no respect to you)
  • Portrayal - to represent or describe someone or something in a painting, film, book
  • Prevailing - existing at a particular time / current
  • Widespread - existing or happening in many places and/or among many people
  • Addiction - the need or strong desire to do or to have something (especially drugs / alcohol / smoking etc)
  • Besetting - having a lot of trouble with something
  • Vice - a moral fault or weakness in someone's character
  • Vague - not clearly expressed
  • Routinely - used for describing what often or usually happens
  • Invoked - to use a law in order to achieve something
  • Choke - to make movement difficult or impossible
  • Offensive - causing someone to feel upset / annoyed
  • Grain - a very small piece of something
  • Curb - to control or limit something that is not wanted
  • Detractors - a person who disparages someone or something
  • Allege - to say that someone has done something illegal or wrong without giving proof
  • Dispensation - exemption from a rule or usual requirement
  • Guilty - responsible for breaking a law
  • Succumbing - to accept defeat
  • Extensive - covering or affecting a large area
  • Altering - changing
  • Reforming - making changes in something
  • Acquired - obtained
  • Urgency - needing attention very soon

Topic 2 : "Microsoft’s new link"
  • Earnest - completely serious
  • Relevance - the relation of something to the matter
  • Monopoly - (an organization or group that has) complete control of something, especially an area of business, so that others have no share
  • Sector - area / part
  • Altered - changed
  • Contour - an outline representing the shape of something
  • Look beyond - to think or plan further than someone or something
  • Legacy - something that is a part of your history or that remains from an earlier time
  • Reconcile - restore friendly relations between
  • Sizeable - very large
  • Slipped - to move out of the correct position
  • Cliché - something that is very often made and is therefore not original and not interesting
  • Me-too - a company's me-too product is one that is designed to be similar to a very popular product made by another company
  • Acquisition - the process of getting something
  • Eventually - in the end
  • Critics - people who says that they do not approve of someone or something
  • Optimistic - hopeful and confident about the future
  • Emphasis - special importance / value given to something
  • High-profile - attracting much attention or publicity
  • Subscription - an amount of money that you pay regularly to receive a product or service
  • Essentially - necessary or needed
  • Thrive - to grow, develop, or be successful
