The Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today (25th February 2016) presented the Railway Budget of the year 2016-17 in Lok Sabha. This is his Second rail budget. This Budget focused on capacity creation in the rail sector, with an increased outlay of about Rs. 1.21 lakh crore, and on completion of the ongoing projects rather than announcing new ones. Extending 2015's measure, passenger fares remain the same. Prabhu held back from raising passenger fares and freight rates promising to exploit new sources of revenue beyond tariff revenue. Here are some Major Highlights of Rail Budget 2016-17.
Highlights of Railway Budget 2016-17
- 3 new super-fast trains -- Humsafar Express, Tejas, Uday
- 30,000 bio-toilets in trains by next year
- 400 stations to have wifi, 100 in next fiscal
- 50% more lower berth quota for senior citizens
- Aastha circuit trains to connect important pilgrim centres
- Bar-coded tickets, scanners on pilot basis
- Beautification stations at pilgrimage centres, including Ajmer, Puri, Varanasi, Nagapattinam
- By 2020 reserved accommodation on trains on demand
- CCTV surveillance for all major stations
- Cleaning of coach on demand soon
- Deen Dayalu unreserved coaches with water, mobile charging points
- E-booking tickets on concessional passes for journalists
- Eticketing capacity raised to 7,200/min, from 2,000/min
- E-ticketing facility on foreign debit/credit cards
- FM Radio stations to provide train borne entertainment
- Information boards in trains, GPS based digital display inside coaches
- Janani Sewa for providing food for children
- Mobile app to deal with ticketing issues, complaints
- No hike in passenger fares, freight rates
- Optional travel insurance for rail passengers
- Rail Mitra Seva for old and disabled passengers
- Rs 30,000 crore spent on passenger fares.
- Rs 8.5 lakh crore to be spent in 5 years for modernisation of rail infrastructure
- Sale of tickets through hand held terminals soon
- Smart coaches with automatic doors, bio vacuum toilets, improved aesthetics
- SPV with Japan for Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet train
- Super-fast unreserved train Antyodaya Express
- To invest Rs 1.21 lakh crore in 2016-17.
