- Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It can affect any individual of any age including children.
- This day aims to raise global awareness of hepatitis (a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E)

- The theme of 2015 is “Prevention of Viral Hepatitis”.
- The theme of 2014 was “Hepatitis: Think Again”.
- The theme of 2013 was “More must be done to stop this silent killer”.

- The theme of 2011 was “Hepatitis affects everyone, everywhere. Know it. Confront it”.

- The Government has announced a seven-day state mourning in honour of former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

- During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout the country where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.
- The government has announced that the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan will be renamed as APJ Abdul Kalam Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan in memory of the former president, who passed away yesterday.

- Note : Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan is a unique concept developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development that aims to inculcate a spirit of inquiry, creativity and love for Science and Mathematics in school children.
- Under Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan, the government schools will be mentored by Institutes like IITs/ IIMs/ IISERs and other Central Universities and reputed organisations through innovative programmes, student exchanges, demonstrations, student visits, etc to develop a natural sense of passion towards learning of Science and Maths.
- Gujarat becomes first Indian state to make voting compulsory in local body polls.

- The Government of Gujarat issued a notification on making voting compulsory for people of the state during elections to local self governing bodies.
- The notification would mean that people have to compulsorily vote from now onwards during elections held for municipal corporations, municipalities, and all village panchayats.
- The Maharashtra government has proposed exemption of small vehicles, including cars and utility vehicles, from toll tax on road projects over Rs 200 crore implemented on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
- Information Technology Secretary Ram Sevak Sharma was appointed as Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
- Ashok Kumar Balyan has joined the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group as CEO - Oil & Gas Business.
- Former agriculture secretary Ashish Bahuguna has been appointed as the Chairman of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

- Google is bidding adieu to Google Plus, a social network that the American search engine had launched four years ago hoping it would become a serious rival to Facebook.
Deaths
- Suniti Solomon, founder of YR Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education passed away.

- Dr. Suniti is credited with documenting the first evidence of HIV infection in India 1986 when she was working as professor of microbiology at the Madras Medical College.
- Santasilan Kadirgamar, a veteran historian passed away.

- An author of several publications, Mr. Kadirgamar is remembered for his work in 1980 on the history and impact of the short-lived Jaffna Youth Congress, which stood for egalitarian and democratic principles.
- His other works included “The Tamils of Lanka: Their Struggle for Justice and Equality with Dignity” and “The Left Tradition in Lankan Tamil Politics.”

- Indian women's archery team earn Olympic quota for 2016 Rio Games with a 5-3 win over Germany.
- Britain's Chris Froome won the 102nd edition of the Tour de France.
