  • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will flag off the much-awaited AC double-decker train for Lucknow from New Delhi tomorrow.
  • Prime Minister NarendraModi‬, for the first time traveled in Delhi Metro‬ from Dhaula Kuan to Dwarka.
    • In his tweet, Mr. Modi said he enjoyed the ride and thanked Sreedharan‬, the former Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, popularly known as Metro Man.

  • Today (25th April) is World Malaria Day.
    • This day recognizes global efforts to control malaria.
    • Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.

    • Wolrd Malaria Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns currently marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).

    • The massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal with devastating force less than 50 miles from the capital, Kathmandu causing tremors in northern India as well.
    • Over 900 killed in Nepal.
    • 41 deaths reported from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal bordering Nepal.

  • On the back foot over the suicide of Gajendra Singh at Aam Aadmi Party rally, the party-led Delhi government today announced to name a farmer compensation scheme after him, the govt also decided to give martyr status for him.
  • Former South Africa cricketer and current Mumbai Indians fielding coach Jonty Rhodes and wife Melanie have named their new born baby girl India (India Jeanne Rhodes).
Deaths
  • Leading Pakistani human rights activist Sabeen Mahmud (40) shot dead in Karachi today.
    • Mahmud was the director of T2F [The Second Floor], a cafĂ© and arts space that has been a mainstay of Karachi’s activists since it opened its doors in 2007.
    • She was one of the country’s most outspoken human rights advocates.

Business & Economy
  • Government has allowed retirement fund body EPFO to invest 5 percent of its corpus in exchange traded funds which will result into an inflow of around Rs 5,000 crore into the stock markets during this fiscal.
    • Note : As per estimates, the EPFO's incremental deposits for 2014-15 would be around Rs 80,000 crore.

Awards & Honors
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today conferred the prestigious ‎Jnanpith‬ award (for the year 2014) on eminent Marathi litterateur Bhalchandra Nemade.
    • Jnanpith Award is the highest literary honor in India. 
    • Mr Nemade is the 50th recipient of the award.
    • Nemde's 1963 novel Kosala (Cocoon) changed the dimensions of Marathi novel.
    • Nemade is the fourth Marathi writer to win the literary honour after VS Khandekar in 1974, VV Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj in 1988, and Govind Karandikar alias Vinda Karandikar in 2003.
  • Assam has been awarded as the Best e-Panchayat state
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the award to state Rural Development minister Rakibul Hussain in New Delhi.
